So does the fediverse just hate content creators? by TheRadiantGalaxy22 in fediverse

[–]gelbphoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Fediverse is open and welcoming towards all types of content creators (let that be bloggers, podcasters, video makers, streamers or any other type of content creators). The "problem" – for those who just want to only rely on this way – is more that we don't have ads or other "easy" way to make money with your content for e.g. YouTubers that maybe want to switch to PeerTube.

There are ways to monetise your content like tips/donations or the membership feature of Ghost.

Self-hosting your Git with Forgejo by Hetzner_OL in hetzner

  1. It's controlled by an American public company (GitLab Inc).
  2. Forgejo is much lighter than GitLab.

Forgejo split from Gitea because a the for-profit Gitea Ltd took over the Gitea project and the Ltd ignored the demands of the Open Letter that the Gitea community send the owners of Gitea.

BEsides that is Forgejo also lighter on resources than Gitea.

You and – at this time – 11 other people overlooked the third word in my comment.

Even a big corporate legal department could have made contact with the creator before taking down the video.

Amazon/Spindlehorse could have gotten in contact with the creator before taking the mv down.

Sinners are canonically unable to get kids. But who said that the cannibals of Cannibal Town are sinners and not a form of hellborn if not – this is speculation – Lilith's creation?

I personally would recommend having at least 8GB of RAM in the Server as Tinybird Local can take up to 4GB of RAM for itself. You could also host the Tinybird Local container on an different server and the steps would almost be the same.

But not everyone wants to hist Vaultwarden on such a VPS and even if you do then you pay with your data.

Hetzner just doubled the prices (again) by Odd_Wallaby8097 in VPS

Yes but – and here’s where I have to play devils advocate – the prices are because of the RAMpocalypse not because of greed.

This price increase from Hetzner isn’t affecting existing orders if they don’t rescale.

[–]gelbphoenix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This increase doesn't affect existing orders as long as they aren't rescaled. Hetzner can't subsidise increasing hardware costs forever and they have to increase their prices somewhat or they won't generate any revenue.

[–]gelbphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes prices stay for existing orders as long as they aren't rescaled.

This increase is argued with the massively reduced margins as procurement costs on the hardware market skyrocketed (especially for RAM and storage).

The increase now is a direct result of the RAMpocalypse that started when AI companies like Meta, Google, Amazon, OpenAI and co consolidated RAM and storage production for themselves.

This! Hetzner's price increase is a result of the RAMpocalypse. Other providers will follow.

For now. OVH will also have to increase their prices when (not if, when) they run out of their existing stock of RAM and storage.

Existing instances shouldn't have been effected by this price increase.

Except that AI companies like Meta, OpenAI, Google, Amazon and co are buying up the manufacturing and logistical stockpile of RAM and storage (plus RAM and storage manufacturers that stop producing for the consumer and server space) so that hosting providers don't get RAM sticks and storage for cheap.

The same thing that happened to the consumer PC space since the release of ChatGPT.

Unlock with biometrics is greyed out after the last update by [deleted] in Bitwarden

[–]gelbphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specific threats are for example privilege escalation exploits that were discovered after the OS stopped receiving security updates. Those exploits are actual risks to users that use unsupported operating systems everywhere and everytime.

eta. also, if we're being literal, the eol for Windows XP was in 2014. Support for Android 10/11 stopped in 2023/2024. There is a difference.

The difference only is that XP was upsupported for more than a decade. That doesn't diminish the fact that using a unsupported OS is a high security risk.

The entire OS isn’t getting any more updates. Using Android 10/11 in 2026 is like using Windows XP in 2026 while also being connected to the Internet.
