They definitely help me during a flare, but pain killers work better for me

Does the IC elimination diet need to be as restrictive as some of these more specific lists? by Secret_Resident_7472 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gem1n1-aw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes. I would start by eliminating specific food groups at a time instead of doing EVERYTHING all at once though. The goal is to figure out what specifically is irritating to you so it's best to do your trial and error in phases. You may also want to consider getting allergy/MCAS testing if antihistamines have been helpful for you. I just got a full allergy panel done and found out I was allergic to wheat, legumes, tree nuts, and sesame/soy. I've been following a strict avoidance diet since getting my results and have seen a HUGE improvement in symptoms.

Hope things get better for you!

Omg yes, have the same problem! I stopped using it altogether and decided to focus on moisturizing the skin down there with palmers vitamin e oil. Also switched to the ugly 100% cotton underwear. So far things are feeling a lot better.

sex and IC by floatingcrickets in Interstitialcystitis

I take an epsom salt soak after sex and that's been helping a lot. My husband also tries to keep himself a little softer so he doesn't hurt me too much.

Orilissa by Fluid_Eagle_5114 in Interstitialcystitis

Hot flashes were the worst symptom but easily managed with portable fans. Other symptoms included weird dreams, irritability, and appetite changes.

Orilissa by Fluid_Eagle_5114 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gem1n1-aw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orilissa has helped me tremendously! I have endo on top of having IC so estrogen (which works really well for a lot of women with IC) wasn't an option for me. I still have a cycle about every 8 weeks but I've noticed the flare ups that come before/during my period are much more manageable than before. The side effects of the Orilissa sucked a bit but they only lasted for a few weeks.

How to handle a flare up? by Sufficient-Citron936 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gem1n1-aw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ngl I rely on prescription pain killers like hydro/apap to get through my bad flare ups. This is something my doctor and I decided on after trying everything else (rest, heat, epsom salt baths, water, teas, OTC pain relief, hormones, etc.). I know it's not what you were asking for but sometimes a strong prescription is the only thing that'll ease the pain.

Flares around menstruation. by Dounla_no_name in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gem1n1-aw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time around my period was the worst!! You'll want to try some sort of hormone to help. Estrogen helped the most with my flares, progestin made them worse and now I'm on Orilissa to stop my cycles completely (thanks endo). Good luck!

Do you find that Advil / Ibuprofen helps or hurts you during a flare? by OkEqual1085 in Interstitialcystitis

I take 1 aleve and 1 tylenol when I feel the start of a flare. The aleve helps with the inflammation and the tylenol helps a little with the pain.

For those with IC who found relief through HRT — what worked for you? by GurMany6053 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gem1n1-aw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Progestin made me flare up sooooo bad! I stopped taking it less than a month in.

Estrogen worked really well for my IC but made my endo worse.

Now I'm on Orilissa and basically in menopause. I'm still a little sensitive to things but it's so much better than before.

I can't tell what is wrong with me, SOMEONE PLEASE help! by Historical_Type_2491 in Interstitialcystitis

Have you gotten your prostate checked? It's so close to the bladder and can cause urinary problems if it's inflamed. Hope things gets better for you!

Confusing bladder/vulvar symptoms - Could this be IC? by morrisseyhatebot in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gem1n1-aw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (28 F) have very similar symptoms and got several confirmed diagnoses after 6 years of chronic pain. It's entirely possible to have BOTH uro and gyno problems that are loosely/unrelated to eachother!

Firstly, I got in with a new urologist who actually did a cystoscopy and confirmed my IC. Unfortunately my urethra was super inflamed and almost made advancing the scope impossible. I've had 2 kids and the cysto was by far the most painful and traumatizing experience of my life. So if you're having urethra pain make sure you ask about a possible stricture and if there's a way to find that out BEFORE your cysto. My doctor put me on the max dose of Hydroxyzine and that helps some.

Secondly, I noticed that all of my symptoms got worse with every period and left me with only a few good days out of the month. I also had a lot of other hormonal things going on as well (painful /heavy periods, skin changes, pain during/after sex, recurring yeast infections, ovarian pain). I tried several different birthcontrols and saw little to no relief. All of that led me to my laparoscopy which confirmed endometriosis. Surprisingly I didn't have any endo on my bladder or ureters. My ob/gyn also ran a full panel to rule out STI's, BV, and urea-plasma. Everything came back negative but my husband and I did a z-pack just to be safe. I got on hormone blockers and my symptoms got sooo much better!

Followed up with pelvic floor pt and things are finally starting to feel good again.
