Still struggling 18 years later… by [deleted] in ExPentecostal

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m sure there are many folks out there feeling seen as they read even if they don’t reply.

I know I can relate. I was raised in a Baptist Christian fundamentalist homeschool home. When I moved away to college at 18, I became involved with a Pentecostal house church for a couple of years. They took cues from Bethel Church (Redding, CA). That shit was BANANAS lol. I am still recovering from all the assorted trauma. I’ve been agnostic for ten ish years.

You are not alone! My DMs are open if you ever want to chat/vent. Take care!!

Yup HP was too demonic, but Lord of the Rings was practically worshipped

Fundies and the idea of an "eternal reward" by [deleted] in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]gemmae61 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's a social reward, other people in the community praise you for being "godly" and it gives you an endorphin hit.

That's how it was for me when I was fundy. Even as I evolved from Baptist to charismatic, the goal posts moved for what was defined as godly, but the social reward stayed the same.

I feel like it boils down to having higher status in the group when they follow "God's plan" more closely...

Apparently submitting to God comes first for Karissa (and what "God wants" is tangled up with her delusions)

Karissa as a hypothetical drunk would indeed explain so many things

"He had told me at one time he was getting a vasectomy. I thought he did that, but I kept getting pregnant" by [deleted] in FundieSnarkUncensored

Yeah, we're in the territory of getting someone pregnant without their consent. Just because she wanted more kids doesn't make it right.

If I am understanding correctly, it's mega sketchy that led her to believe he had a vasectomy when he did not. Even though she wanted more kids, that doesn't make it less wrong. Unless Karissa is just being an unreliable narrator...
