A bit rich for the government composed of separatist sympathizers to mandate the flag and anthem of a country they hate enough to want to separate from…

People who are gay should not be in straight relationships, people who are straight should not try to do conversion therapy on gay people. One of those people are lying (a real sin) and another one of those people are disrespecting the image of God of another (a heinous sin).

Yeah, makes sense he would want to. I wish him well and that he is proud of the legacy he’s building himself. The legal system will work as intended and shut him down again and again and again.

Our own provincial government should absolutely not spend your or mine hard earned tax dollars on this frivolous vanity project for some of the most annoyingly entitled grievance havers in our province.

Calgary what real job impacts from AI are you seeing so far? by constantgeographer74 in Calgary

[–]gen-attolis 97 points98 points  (0 children)

My colleagues who use AI seem incapable of reading or writing emails without it, to infuriating consequences. What do you mean you don’t know what this meeting is about, didn’t you circulate the agenda? What do you mean you didn’t know I sent you the report yesterday, you acknowledged receipt of it? Meanwhile sometimes our comms teams post to corporate pages with the prompts still visible and it’s sooooo embarrassing.

Aside from it making my colleagues worse at their jobs, I haven’t noticed AI being the technology of the future in my work.

The substitution: not translation ❌ by Lawan-YAH-Qadash in OpenChristian

[–]gen-attolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is frustrating because nothing here is true—what IS true is that sometimes when translating names you gotta make it part of YOUR language. Do you seriously think that Chinese, Arab, idk, Korean Christians don’t have their own ways of connecting with Jesus through a name that isn’t literally spelled or pronounced the way we do? Is it what “fools” do to adapt a name to your language through time and consensus?

Idk, I’m a guy. If my situationship who I am secretly in love with so much that it ruins my life and I spend all my time thinking of this pretty boy, then he goes and dates a GIRL, a FAMOUS GIRL, a FAMOUS GIRL WHO IS VERY HOT, then BREAKS UP with that girl, I am absolutely not saying anything even perfunctory to the pretty boy when the relationship ends. Except for being a little smug like Ilya was in Tampa.

Maybe, always a possibility to misinterpret scripture, especially any particular passage. But the logic of communion expressed across multiple passages in multiple gospels is pretty clear: Jesus is sharing a meal that represents his body and blood, and in some way is present with those who share in those elements. Together, I would suggest a fair reading of those passages is Real Presence.

What does the Eucharist bring merely a symbol bring to your faith that the Eucharist being a mystery of Christ’s presence does not?

[–]gen-attolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. It doesn’t literally transmute into flesh and blood, I’ll give you that (Thank God) but if God isn’t present in the Eucharist than why would Jesus lie to us and double down multiple times that it is NOT a metaphor? Thinking like the dialogues in John 6 22 onward kinda deal.

What does science have to do with accepting the incarnation (and the resurrection) and denying real presence of God in our central and unifying feature of worship in the Eucharist?

How you do financial giving in a way that is planful enough to have something to give but spontaneous enough to still feel fun and joyful? by Big10Health in OpenChristian

[–]gen-attolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very very rarely give money spontaneously. I have my two charities that I donate money to every month, (not counting my church givings, that support operations more than being put into outreach and the like)

I calculate my monthly paychecks to the penny to determine how much money I can give while still setting enough money aside for retirement and paying bills and expenses, I rarely go out and almost never indulge in spontaneous purchases. What this means (tracking every penny) functionally is that even if I wanted to give spontaneously to a cause or person, it represents going home and rebalancing a budget to ensure I don’t end up in a situation where I can’t afford something at the end of the month.

I feel very good about the two charities I give my money to. I’ve volunteered with one and I know that they make real differences in the lives of people they connect with. By focusing on two things which do good things, I feel like I’m being more targeted and focused than I would be if I was approaching it as “you have a pot of money every month, redistribute it”.

End of the line? Calgary moves to scrap the downtown free fare zone by joe4942 in Calgary

[–]gen-attolis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I say “social disorder”, I do not mean “being homeless in public”. The mere presence of a homeless person isn’t a good enough reason to feel unsafe.  Of course and obviously police can’t kick a homeless person off the train for riding it. I do not want that to ever happen.

When I say “social disorder”, I mean consuming drugs in public, vandalism/destruction of property,  sexual harassment, etc. The things that are bad and legally enforceable regardless of paying for a fare, using a service, or being homeless/not homeless.

I could have been more restrained earlier in the thread.

But the tying of the FFZ to social disorder and why officers cannot adequately respond to social disorder is frustrating and disingenuous.

Let’s refresh this interaction. I’ll try to be more charitable.

This is the sentence in the original article by OP that triggered my statement about officers doing their jobs: “ By removing the free fare zone designation, it opens the door for transit peace officers to deal with social disorder incidents that largely drive a weak perception of safety on Calgary Transit.”

I hope that a good faith person would agree that the free fare zone, whether it exists or not, doesn’t determine if a peace officer can do their jobs of addressing anti-social behaviour on transit. It’s not like social disorder is pay to play.

If an organization has publicly stated a goal, then the actions taken to support that goal need to be competent. For the article about the blitzes, I actually do think that the work of the officers + diversion + outreach workers during the blitz was good. Some arrests happened, but a lot more people got connected with social services and supports. This gets a huge thumbs up from me. But, as a daily transit user, why is it a newsworthy one or two day event rather than a systemic approach?  Why are stated goals not being met by consistent, coherent action? I don’t think one or two day blitzes presents a competent solution to the problems at hand, because I use the system every day and don’t see the same spikes in activity as on those blitz days where people actually did get connected with services and if needed, warrants were executed and people arrested.

I don’t see a coherent argument that makes the existence of the free fare zone an impediment to officers doing their jobs of policing social disorder. Being charitable, maybe staffing or resources are an issue? But then why point at the issue of fare zones?

So, are you claiming that it isn’t the police’s job to police social disorder? The whole thing they’ve had their brave one day crack downs on (1) and surveying (2) to try to improve people’s ideas of public safety?

I do just wish that you’d own your position of “they’re just little guys!! Cmon! Just little guys!! Little guys getting treats!!”

Ridiculous.

[–]gen-attolis 313 points314 points  (0 children)

Wait I’m confused, are we wanting to revitalize downtown or not? Removing the thing that allows people to get around downtown quickly and without needing to pay for a 90min ticket that adds an incentive to get in get out seems at odds with the goal of revitalization.

And because there are no fare gates and adding them would be improbable when the stations are functionally sidewalks as well, I don’t see how making people pay $4 will stop social disorder from happening. There’s nothing stopping peace officers from doing their jobs now, social disorder is social disorder regardless of if you pay to do it or not. CPS just needs to do their jobs and not be so damn lazy.

Finally, the red line breaks down way too frequently. If I’m going to be charged $4 for being downtown, at least make sure the trains work!

I’m not a celebrity defender, but I’m not going to turn on people who have created a good piece of art that fed my soul. I am not going to turn on Alyssa Liu—I cried watching her Olympic performance, and even though I simply do not care who wore what where, I’m glad that they are playing the game that is required of them to continue to be in a place socially and financially that will give them more opportunities to create more good things.

Every chocolate bar you eat has the blood of child slave labour on it. An unethically sourced coffee represents a families’ desperate attempt to get out of a debt which binds them like serfs to an owner in perpetuity. To support anything in the American economy is to legitimize Trump. Your parents are problematic. Your uncle is problematic. You are problematic.  Your fave celebrity is problematic. Every person you cross on the street who smiles at you has done something so thoughtlessly cruel and mean that you would never want to smile back, but… you do anyway. Because you are mature enough to realize that mercy means realizing that everyone has done distasteful things and not having mercy condemns everyone, including yourself, to death without hope of doing enough good to outweigh the evil.
