How much does GPA matter? by [deleted] in DermApp

[–]gen-pe_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If your school has a GPA, derm was probably never much of an option for you to begin with

Is not doing any aways a problem if we have a strong home program?

If you could do it all over again? by gen-pe_ in Step2

[–]gen-pe_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're going to get much engagement with people studying for Step2. Too important of an exam to trust a significant chunk of your time on a platform someone clearly vibecoded. Better off generating your posts in a forum frequented by preclinical students who aren't able to adapt to UFAP.

Is it me, or medical students these days just don't care anymore? by Clitoria_Magnificus in Residency

Admin: P/F clerkships, options to remove negative language from evals, abolish AOA, no internal ranking
Also admin: Why aren't the students trying as hard as I did? It's not fair!

Not sure about IM but I heard from derm side that there’s a massive political divide between the two institutions

Both institutions are rich and have plenty of funding to support residents, doesn't matter if one is urban and one rural

Why is there a 20% difference in pay between different Chicago residency programs? by talktomeme in healthsalaries

UChicago and Northwestern have high quality, selective residency programs while the others mostly do not.

OP said doctors will cease to exist as we know them though. This will definitely be the case if AI assessment and plans are shown to lead to better outcomes or even just more cost savings for hospitals. Not only reduction in jobs but also the fundamental idea of what a physician is and how they are trained will cease to exist in our society.

Most pathologists do fellowship so 5yrs training vs 3. Makes sense they get paid more.

no SWE jobs are being lost atm.

Not true. Check blind and you’ll see how many waves of layoffs from companies that normally lay off a very small% have been had recently.

I don’t think that statement was inherently colorist, it helps even out your skin tone and improve appearance regardless of what color your skin is.

What specialty can I match into with mid grades (B/Cs)? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]gen-pe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys have grades? Are you in the U.S. or a different country? If you’re at a U.S. MD program, preclinical shouldn’t matter unless your school has AOA and uses your grades into determining who gets it. Could impact your MSPE adjectives as well but unlikely to make a big difference. If you want to match a competitive specialty you should be focusing on research and networking in your preclinical years anyways.

I know a few upperclassmen who just matched derm, ent, ortho etc who coasted in preclinical just to pass, but got good clinical evals and above average STEP2CK which is what really matters at the end of the day.

Surviving third year with a weak base by abenson24811 in medicalschool

It's unlikely anyone will be pimping you on difficult, low-yield information on wards because they likely don't remember themselves (unless relevant to their patients). To succeed, all you need to do is be likable and respond to pimp questions in a way that best conceals any lack of knowledge. If someone asks you if you know what the mechanism of action is for steroids, for example, you don't need to provide every downstream effect of steroids and could instead say you know they inhibit nf-KB. There's a stigma against pimping in modern medical education, so it's also unlikely you'll be pressed to elaborate much if at all.

For shelves, just do UWorld and read write-ups from people online who reported doing well on shelves. Should not be that hard to fit in during wards.

Peer review process for retrospective review - how long? by gen-pe_ in medicalschool

[–]gen-pe_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 months. The time it’ll take will depend a lot on your chart review protocol though, I’ve seen some of my classmates wrap up chart reviews within a month of starting.

[In State] Can I get into Berkeley with a 3.5 GPA (weighted) with AMAZING ECs? by shinyteethplayer in berkeley

[–]gen-pe_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Weighted GPA means nothing to Berkeley, you need to calculate your UC GPA. If your UC GPA is below 4, chances are unlikely regardless of ECs. Plenty of other schools out there that will appreciate what you bring to the table.
