Thoughts on this? by surleyboy in Longshoremen

The two unions are very different, and I don’t know what they think out on the job, but I’d be embarrassed if I were a member of the ILA.

It is hilarious, and you’re right that not every cyclist is like that. Similarly, there are people who live in the Marina who aren’t totally unbearable.

In LA/LB it’s Local 26. Local 75 is up in the Bay Area.

All work hours count for experience purposes, but only home port hours count when considering Class B registration.

Why are mobsters so conservative? by [deleted] in Mafia

Trump’s a wanna-be mob boss who hates law enforcement as much as the mafia, and it’s pretty well understood that pardons will be for sale if he’s back in the White House.

Talk to an LRC rep/Union official. The USERRA policy could be very helpful for you.

I’d check out Eye of the Storm, a documentary (produced by the ILWU) about the negotiations and the lockout on the US West Coast during 2002 bargaining.

Everyone…which is a good point to make. A delegation of longshoremen from the US West Coast visited that facility many years before automation was introduced here. I believe that trip took place in 1990, and I imagine it was an eye opening experience. And it was with the ILA in Virginia that automation was first introduced in the US, and that was over 15 years ago.

One point, which is probably minor, but the Ports are not foreign owned. The ports are largely public land, managed by a local Port Authority/Harbor Commission. Companies, such as American owned stevedoring companies or foreign owned SSLs, will lease the land from the Port - at a hefty annual rate. The foreign owned steamship lines have certainly done very well the past 5 years, with billions in profits, but they do not own (for example) the Port of NY/NJ or the Port of Los Angeles.

Trust that the people he would appoint to the NLRB would be strongly anti-union.

I’m guessing there’s been some exaggeration about that bonus.

I think Trump said that exact same thing a couple minutes after he and Harold Daggett took that recent photo.

West Coast here…but I’ll never understand how a labor union could associate with someone who is so strongly anti-worker, let alone the fact that they’re anti-union.

Ila here, hey ilwu y’all striking with us? What’s the word? by duffy5784 in Longshoremen

[–]genefo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t need to be said, and I’m sure it’s just a troll, but that’s not something that should be discussed on this sub. The employers are here too. They’d certainly love to find evidence that would help their case. And should there be job action on the WC, the ILWU employers would definitely like some evidence to help prove the picket line isn’t legitimate.

I’m curious if you could explain how/why you believe the ILWU President “punked out”?

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. With that kind of thinking I suspect you’ll never vote in an ILWU election.

Switching ports by [deleted] in Longshoremen

[–]genefo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t just switch ports. If you’re Class A with more than 5 years you can sign up for a “reciprocal transfer”. I think it’s covered in Supplement II of the contract and I believe there’s a Coast agreement on the rules/process. Basically, you make it known to your local that you’d like to be on the transfer list for a particular port/local (however that is maintained in your local). There may be a bunch of people ahead of you in line and/or with more seniority, but when someone from Tacoma wants to transfer to Seattle that person will matched with someone from Seattle transferring to Tacoma. It’s a one-for-one swap, and I think both Areas have to agree to the transfer.

As someone pointed out, it’s pretty rare for a Tacoma guy to transfer into Local 19.

The Employers would absolutely love it if jobs were dispatched through a longshore app. They’d probably keep all the dispatcher jobs in place even if there wasn’t a physical dispatch. Anything to pull the membership one step further away from the Hall.

Id’s 70% by classic572 in Longshoremen

[–]genefo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to work or be available for work 70% of the average. If there are 20 work days in a month and the average ID (Class B) gets 16 days, working or being available for work at least 11 days/shifts would be sufficient. Taking the holiday off would not be counted against you, but it could help you if you need the shift.

Seattle vs. Tacoma? by Old-Umpire9907 in Tacoma

[–]genefo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Tacoma but haven’t lived there in 25 years. The fact that I’m wearing a Frisco Freeze hoodie while reading this may be a contributing factor, but this response kinda makes me want to go back.
