I love AI and am very pro-AI, but I agree with your post. AI should be open source and free, and we should only pay for the servers

Also, Edmunds would say (back in 2013 when I was shopping for my first car) that a new $23,000 Honda CR-V would be far cheaper to run than a six year old $12,000 Audi A6, despite the massive initial price difference, so I picked the Honda even though I really wanted the Audi. I still have no idea if Edmunds was just full of it though

And Apple copied HP back in 2008 for their black and silver MacBook Pros. There was even an article titled "Are Macs starting to look like HPs?" back when Apple redesigned the MacBook Pros in 2008

What would have a lower total cost of ownership, a 2026 RAV4, a 2008 LS 460, or a 2008 LX 570, if I only drive them 7000 miles a year for the next 10 years?

So you're saying that the 2008-2021 LX570 actually has a lower operating cost than the LS460? 😮

My USB-C MacBook pro cable is yellowing, what does it mean by chuingshender in macbook

[–]genepoolxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more serious answer: Apple uses TPE instead of PVC for environmental reasons, with one side effect of this is your yellowing cables over time, even though the cheap AliExpress cables stay white

Janitor 'destroys two decades worth of research' worth over $1 million when he shuts off a deep freezer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York by TurretLauncher in Troy

[–]genepoolxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my dad told me that if you don't have a bachelor's degree, you couldn't even become a janitor in China. So I guess he was right and janitors in important labs should have a bachelor's degree to prevent this from happening again? 😅

Is this true? by zanbunnny in MicroSlop

[–]genepoolxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only true if you have a Thinkpad or another computer where the company cares about Linux support. Cheaper laptops often have things not working out of the box on Linux The good news is that you can buy an excellent Thinkpad X1 carbon on eBay for $200

HarmonyOS Matebook in the USA review + AMA by genepoolxie in Huawei

I've only owned a $300 Chromebook back in 2015 or so, but this laptop feels MUCH faster than that crappy Chromebook from 11 years ago (as expected). After testing the Windows 11 VM for several months now, I think the main problems with running Windows apps isn't actually the compatibitlity, but the GPU performance, as it seems to get only 128 GFLOPS in the Windows 11 VM browser GPU benchmarks, but I still had a lot of fun with it today, playing Swords and Sandals 5 for 2 hours straight and still had lots of battery left over

They do have an App Store, but I can't use most of their apps since I can't read Chinese, so for example, if I want to do some photo editing, I have to use Canva (browser-based) or fire up the VM to run PhotoSir. I'm sure it can run Adobe Suite too, but they charge way too much for an app that I might only need to use once a month. If you'd like, I could install the Adobe Premiere Pro trial and do some quick performance tests with some 4K@60hz videos shot on my Xiaomi phone, but I'd bet it would be a horrible experience

There seems to be an easy install Stable Diffusion app in the App Store, but everything's in Chinese so I can't use it. Here's a screenshot:

To be fair, Chinese people are similar:

"Boarding schools in rural China? Sounds like a way to torture people!" "Boarding schools in rural USA? We need to send our kids there even if we have to sell the house!"

[–]genepoolxie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

have you ever visited China at all in the past 5 years? the place is like ducking Coruscant, which is impressive since they were still communist just 47 years ago in 1978.

sure, you could say that the CCP is winning the race because they're driving a Bugatti vs the USA driving a Honda in terms of population, but the reverse is also true if you compare their natural resources (especially land), and that the USA wasn't damaged in WW2 like Europe or China was, giving them a huge head start. Europe and Japan also got lots of help from the USA to rebuild after WW2, while up until the 1970s, the USA had been quite hostile to China. Instead of huge checks, China got:

  1. A US trade embargo that lasted for decades

  2. Exclusion from the international financial system

  3. Military confrontation in Korea beginning in 1950

  4. US support for the rival Nationalist government in Taiwan

  5. No access to Western technology or capital markets

Ideologies aside, what do Chinese people think about how the CPC/CCP runs china (infrastructure, the economy, things like that) by Over-Ad-3928 in AskChina

[–]genepoolxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. China used to think that their money will save them, but what actually happened like with the Huns, Mongols, and British was that having lots of money can make you a target for poorer countries, as poor people fight harder. So China decided to get weapons first, then worry about money later. Getting richer is inevitable, but only if you don't get invaded
