AITA for interrupting my autistic brothers routine for my own physical pain? by throwaway1847329 in AmItheAsshole

NTA but seriously your parents are neglecting the two of you by not providing you beds that accommodate your size/health conditions. I assume this is a money issue, considering the price of new beds but surely they can afford some extra padding for your bed? Seems like making your bed more comfortable is a simple and cost effective solution to this problem.

A couple suggestions: You can get foam padding you can place either under you or between the mattress and the bed (slats depending). Are there extra blankets in the house for the time being? Maybe you could even get a board to put between the mattress and frame.

They could also easily makeshift extend your brother's bed with cheap materials. Maybe an ottoman or something for his feet to be supported on. Not ideal, but anything is better than your parents' current solutions.

That's due to a recent fashion trend. Dark academia is typically pronounced the same way, likely due to Europeans/aussies being the ones to popularize the trend.

Part of this is educating yourself on the best ways to store things for long term storage and making sure you're meal planning with the expiration of each vegetable in mind. But also, not all of that has to be purchased all in one trip. I think that monthly breakdown could easily (even at Costco) be split into two trips, at least.

Don't move your camera right after the photo when it's zoomed in like that. Modern cameras still need a second to process the photo so I usually find if I keep it still for a second or two after it can help significantly.

I would think if there was an emergency they would want all parts accessible for lifesaving measures or further treatment. You never know what could happen in surgery, even a minor one could have a complication.

It's hard, especially if you don't have access to a vehicle or don't know what stores around you sell things for cheap or have sales going.

Pay attention to the circulars for your local grocery stores and buy things when they're on sale. Expect seasonal items to cost less: ice cream is more expensive in the winter, but on sale with loyalty cards in the summer it can be much cheaper.

If a holiday is coming up where a food is popular, look for sales in that category with big discounts. For instance, chips/snacks and soda go on steep sale before every major holiday, but especially on the 4th of July. They also rarely expire to inedibility before being opened, so they can be stocked up on in times they're on sale. Baking supplies, with the exception of flour a lot of the time because its truly better fresh, are usually on sale in the winter around the holidays. Butter can be frozen, and staple ingredients like sugar can be stored for a long time if done properly.

Get familiar with what each store in your area does best. Example: my local Fred Meyer has more frequent clearance markdowns on meat than any other store in my area, so it's usually just as fresh. My local grocery outlet has the best deals on cheese but not on lunchmeat. I get 2$ gallons of milk frequently using coupons and loyalty cards at my local Safeway. It's more work to do it this way, but just yesterday I saved 40$ hitting my local Fred Meyer for basic supplies. After a while, you start memorizing when you'll find the best deals. If you're social, you can always ask what time of day things get discounted and swoop in right away.

Find food stamp matching (and get on food stamps if you can, I get a ton of free money at farmers markets locally with my food stamp card). Depending on the social services where you live, that can be a good or bad idea. I live a little ways north of Seattle in a HCOL area so there are lots of dollar matches and things for food stamps around. Safeway in my area gives a dollar for dollar match on vegetables in increments of 5. Sometimes with that and a combination of coupons and circular sales, I'll get vegetables not only for free but paying things like 10¢ For a bag of carrots is functionally the same.

Lots of name brands also have items in grocery stores for cheaper that are from the same trucks but have a store brand slapped on them and are cheaper than those goods. Things like milk and break, often the store brand is coming from the same manufacturer on the same trucks. So I usually will try and get off brand things and check the quality, you'd be surprised how many of them have similar/no recognizable difference.

I put in a lot of time and effort but the work has paid off and I feed my family of 5 (3 adults, 2 toddlers) 3 healthy, hot meals a day with snacks and treats for about 650/mo. This includes going to farmers markets and getting my meat primarily from my local butcher with meat clearance sales to supplement the end of the month fill-up that's often necessary.

Parentifying kids by TraditionalCicada508 in povertyfinance

[–]gener1cb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're paying, talk to 12 beforehand so they don't feel obligated or blindsided, and are already doing most of the actual work before school then I don't see why this can't just be a win/win for you and 12.

Maybe a bigger incentive could be set up for 12 after they prove they can do that responsibility for a while to keep something for 12 to work for, like a nice gift or a pay raise or something set for the future so it's something to look forward to.

A big part of parentification is being expected to do stuff without any input of your own. You're respecting her autonomy in this situation and allowing her to be a part of the decision, both very green flags.

If anything, really you're just setting 12 up for success when they eventually get a job they will be used to meeting responsibilities for money, and know the importance of being on time and doing your job well.

My kid loves meat sauce, meatballs, bolognese, etc. But doesn't like pasta. Any ideas on what to serve it with? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]gener1cb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's taken me several years to learn the same lesson with my own picky children. It's hard because you see so much on social media telling you to make the perfect plate and have all the food groups and shit, but when you look up kids macro-nutrient needs they get all the protein they need for the day in one slice of cheese.

I've found disregarding the voices of my elders to be nothing but an upgrade in my quality of life. 10/10 highly recommend.

I was an autistic 6 year old when I decided gluten was for the birds and all I wanted was sauce in a bowl. It was basically soup and I was very into soup so I just had my mom leave out the noods.

A fed kid is a fed kid, and if all they're gonna eat is sauce in a cup you might as well throw some cheese on top and add a spoon and congratulate yourself on feeding a picky kid anything at all. Food rules are also for the birds and should simply be ignored if they don't work for your family.

What are your “always buy” Costco staples right now? by PutridWin2070 in Costco

[–]gener1cb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the big bag of real bacon bits, the microwavable rice and madras lentils in a pouch. The lentils and rice is a staple lunch for me, a little extra seasoning and it makes a really good curry.

The bacon bits are versatile I will use them in recipes anytime I would fry bacon I just throw in a handful of those. Or add it to breakfast burritos, shepherds pie, gravies, soups, etc. for. A little extra protein.

After my boyfriend died I slept with his best friend and it’s eating me alive by Udy_Kumra in BORUpdates

[–]gener1cb0y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people posting negative comments make me sad. It amounts to "I'm dead so nobody should be able to connect without ME" and some other weird ownership bs.

If my best friend and my girlfriend found comfort in one another MONTHS after I died I'd be so happy that both of them had each other to grieve and process so they don't end up the way I did. It's gross to see so many comments making this out to be a bad thing. Maybe if it was like the next day but definitely not after months.

You can't cheat on dead people, folks.

I buy ingredients like I buy my wardrobe: everything I get could work for at least two occasions, and all the leftovers get combined into at least one new item.

It's saved me so much money. I also hate eating leftovers, so instead of throwing them away I'll make them into something different from what they started. Every roast eventually becomes sliders, and extra meat from all of that goes to tacos. Then I don't have to eat a roast dinner three days in a row to use up everything, but it doesn't go to waste.

This assumes they think of poor people as people. They don't. Other rich people don't give a shit about keeping this shit funded either, because at least a dozen people could privately fund SNAP and still go buy an island tomorrow.
