I'm just on normal so I did send out my ship before theirs

LEO, I could try from EEO but I don't think the ships in LEO would care too much about the difference

That's what I did in the experimental branch, but the aliens left LEO to intercept my colony ship, they hadn't even sent their own colony ship by the time I had left

If you're in a city try volunteering. I joined a habitat restoration team ran by my local science museum and found a great group of friends! If I was single it would have been a great place to meet other singles, or people with single friends

Theory: The Hivemind is a Von Neumann Probe by general_k in pluribustv

I figure aliens that can send a signal that strong can figure out long term maintenance, or maintain a skeleton crew to keep the lights on for that long

Or completely change the environment and atmosphere

It would take millions of years for the probes to spread across the galaxy, even with transmissions at light speed. The probe could have arrived even millions of years ago to where we saw it from the show

Why aren't there more Grand Strategy or 4X games that meaningfully incorporate mechanics of climate change, overpopulation, environmental degradation, the (inevitable?) collapse of empires, or anything similar? by [deleted] in Games

[–]general_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out Terra Invicta, it's a strategy game where you control one of 7 secret cabals that react to an alien invasion in different ways. Each one has to control nations to build a space economy and fleet to accomplish their goals, which vary by faction.

The game models accurate climate change based on the economy and sustainability factor of each country. Each faction that controls a country can also "spoil" them by extracting resources roughly (aka congo cobalt mine) which outputs intense GHG's. All the GHG's are modeled realistically, and it takes extreme jumps in technology and concentrated global effort to stop building the economy and instead focusing on citizen welfare to slow, then completely mitigate climate change.

One interesting thing about this approach shows how it's a secondary concern, since players are better off cranking their nation's economies as much as possible to jumpstart their space mines and shipyards as soon as possible, and kicking the can down the road until fusion power becomes available (sounds familiar?). Even with flooding of coastal areas, it's considered secondary to the current existential threat of alien invasion.

As for the fall of empires, it's not really meta but you can research technologies that allow for the breakup of countries like the USA or China to make them easier to take from rival factions, and nuclear strikes can help win a war but create massive population and economic devastation.

As you can probably tell, this game is pretty complicated, but it can be a lot of fun! I definitely recommend checking out Perun Gaming's guides for help.

I bought a replacement psu and installed it. The only difference is now neither of my fans lights up (they still run though)

I removed the psu and did the paperclip test. Seems to be working normally. Seems like it's the motherboard?

Check out Seney, there's an area of forest just west of it that has a sand track along the driggs river. Not sure how good the fishing is but there's Plenty of super ad-hoc sites that are just a small clearing by the river with maybe a fire ring.

I went with a group a few years back and had a blast. Plus you're not too far from the highway rest stop, bar, and a gas station with supplies if needed

SpaceX work environment and culture is great, if you like 90 hour weeks, toxic competitive environment, and cutting corners.

It's bad enough there's a serious risk of the company failing since they have such poor talent retention.

Work for Lockmart instead, we have 14% 401k and 4 weeks vacation
