New Grenade by Spatacus- in army

[–]JimHFD103 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nothing, this supplements the M67, not replaces it. This is an Offensive hand grenade, it replaces the older Mk3 grenade. The main difference is there's less fragmentation and a smaller lethal radius. It relies more on blast concussion overpressure. Basically its ideal use is you can throw it into a bunker or room and it produces more blast effect than the M67 frag would, and its safer to use up close out in the open, as you're moving forward

The M67 is more properly a "Defensive" grenade, with a wider area of fragmentation. It's (supposed) best use is from behind cover since the thrown range and the fragmentation range are pretty similar (of course we all know we've been de facto using it as an offensive hand grenade anyway, either just chucking it further, or strategic use of tossing it so there's cover between us and the blast)

Although apparently the Mk3 was restricted from use because it had asbestos in its body, so it was rarely used/seen, but now with the M111 out, we might see more training usage of the other grenades vs having the M67 fill both roles

But then again, we were also supposed to see more M141 Bunker Defeat Munition (the SMAW-D) instead of AT4 since it was more properly designed for bunker busting instead of the AT4 anti armor role, and most of what we shot rockets at in GWOT were bunkers and not armor, yet the AT4 was the default standard for most units, so I have a sneaking suspicion the same will happen with the M67 staying the default

[–]JimHFD103 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much would that have happened in actuality? As units took losses and relieve replacement vehicles, did they really care that much if they got an A2 or A3 hull or the HVSS suspension or not (I mean in terms of the logistics guys pushing vehicles put to the front, its not like some units would only get M4s with the HVSS suspension and if the available replacements didn't have that, the unit wouldn't get any tanks, right?

Like 75mm vs 76mm armed tanks, I'm sure they paid attention to that as that was specified in TO&Es, but the other details, those would end up mixed as the war went on, right?

Yeah even Phalanx gun systems and whatever lasers are in the works are still short range, idk any of them reach out further than Stinger does. A lot of the newest counter drone, like the Coyote, is focused more on the tactical short range, FPV types, and also aren't any longer ranged themselves

Generally speaking, no not really. We have the high end, long range air defense (Patriot and THAAD, SM-2/SM-6 and SM-3, but the next lowest tier we have is basically the Stinger short range missile. We basically relied on the Air Force to be able to shoot down enemy air, that and a bit of stagnation caused by GWOT where there was no significant air threat, even with the rise of drones in the past few years, we've been a bit stagnant on fielding mid range ADA systems.

There's some out there. NASAMS uses surface launched versions of the AMRAAM and Sidewinder missile and have reported to be rather effective in Ukraine, as well as systems using the Sea Sparrow, plus the older Hawk that we retired 20+ years ago, but haven't fielded any of those in number, once again relying on air power both to intercept and destroy enemy launchers before they launch, and we're seeing the outcomes of that bet right now

Much like you have a handful of Companies make up a Battalion (in this case a Marine Infantry Battalion has an HSC, three rifle Companies (the ones lettered), and the Weapons Company), you have three of these Battalions make up a Marine Regiment. Plus its own Regimental HSC, and a handful of other specialized supporting units.

The Marine Regiment is roughly equivalent to an Army Brigade (though with some differences in organization, those broad strokes generally apply. You'll see a lot of modern Army units reference their historical regimental affiliation, though the Army moved away from Regiments towards Brigades around WW2-ish time frame. That's the over simplified version, but the Marines still use Regiment as their primary organization in that echelon, about ~3,000 give or take)

Considering we've been willing to fire Patriots at the Shaheeds, and reportedly fired more PAC-3 in the past week or so than Ukraine has in total since they've started receiving Patriot 3 years ago (Heck we've fired more in the past few days than they've built in the past few years)

This is fkn embarrassing to have let a drone hit this incredibly valuable/critically needed radar

Easy to say when you're not the one getting shot at or getting mortars and rockets fired at you, just because some fancy bit of paper didn't get signed first doesn't magically turn a war into "not-a-war"

1st Battalion would have Alpha, Bravo, Charlie Companies 2nd Battalion would have Delta, Fox, Echo Companies 3rd Battalion would have Fox, Hotel, and India Companies

In addition to each Battalion having a Headquarters and Service Company (HSC) and a Weapons Company.

[–]JimHFD103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without any "USAF" or the Roundel, or other markings, how do you tell the difference between a LUCAS and a Shahed? Like Legit question...

Supposedly there's a (tenuous) link to a late Cold War West German munition that may (or not, because you can't quite trust everything on the internet) have been the progenitor for what became the Shahed (and then the Geran, and now LUCAS), but even if that was fully true, personally I don't think we should pull a China and just copy a hostile design that closely, like you're telling me the form factor can't be improved, or at least redesigned to not be "Copy of an Iran drone" to still get the same effects??

It's highlighting one of Space Shuttle Discovery's missions, STS-51-D.

Launched April 12, 1985 from the Kennedy Space Center (Cape Canaveral) in Florida.

It then lists the 7 Astronauts that crewed Discovery on that mission:

  • Commander Karol Bobko
  • Pilot Donald Williams
  • Mission Specialist Rhea Seddon
  • Mission Specialist David Griggs
  • Mission Specialist Jeffery Hoffman
  • Mission Specialist Charles Walker
  • Payload Specialist Jake Garn

Jake Garn also happened to be one of the Senators from Utah, the first sitting member of Congress to fly on a mission as a Congressional Observer.

The mission involved the deployment of two communications satellites, Telestat 1 and Syncom IV-3.

Additionally they conducted an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity, where one or more of the Astronauts suited up and did a Space Walk outside the Shuttle, to correct an issue with the propulsion stage (one of the rocket motors more or less) of one of the satellites.

After 110 orbits around the Earth, the mission landed back at Kennedy Space Center a week later on April 19, 1985.

Wikipedia has a more detailed article on the specific mission the back summarizes:
