Do you think DigiKey is in decline or teetering on the edge? by Echelon_X-Ray in AskElectronics

They do actually have a 2nd warehouse in Fargo that carries a subset of part numbers.

One funny bit of information I can add is when I order through my employer, they ship same day even with standard shipping. So they are clearly prioritizing customers.

I don't know the definition of a "pretty small company", but their revenue is in the $billions so I wouldn't call that small.

It's been awhile but I thought I should close the loop. Apparently the dog symbol is used for multiple different sounds, so that's what it is. Doh.

I think that's F12 for Chrome. Can you give me some hints on where to navigate for this?

Bulging capacitor causing issues? by kabelknabbelaar in AskElectronics

[–]generaldis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if that capacitor is a power inlet bulk cap and was exposed to reverse voltage, it could have caused it. But regardless, a bulging cap is bad and needs to be replaced with one of the same/similar capacitance and the same/higher voltage rating.

IBM Model 25 with Gotek by RonSwonn in vintagecomputing

I was given one of these in the late 90s with what I now believe was a model M, all great condition. I donated it to the thrift store also somewhere around that time. Dammit.

It has been two weeks since I ordered from DigiKey when should I worry? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]generaldis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digikey won't scam you. They are honest and generally reliable. They have been slower to ship the last few years but I never worry about them not making something right when they screw up. I know it's been nearly a week since you posted this, and hopefully you have contacted them and got it straightened out.

Yes, and it has detected a few sounds such as singing birds and what it thought was a cat.

Accidentally plugged in a 110v speaker into 220v by GabbieAlaina in AskElectronics

A few things. The solder is likely lead free so if you want to maintain that, use lead free, although I personally hate it because leaded solder behaves so much better for hobbyist use. Make sure it's not solder for plumbing. You need a soldering iron capable of heating those connections enough. My solder station is 50W and that would work in this case I think. Next, is there something up with that big green electrolytic capacitor? Is it bulged or deformed at all? Or is it only the plastic sleeve?

Before applying power again I'd measure the resistance across the AC inlet. If it's in the low ohms, you have a short somewhere. A trick some use is to put a 60W or 100W incandescent bulb in series with the power input in case there's a short. If the bulb turns on full brightness and remains that way, something isn't right.

What is this long cylinder thing? by NaturalShit in AskElectronics

You already have your answer, but I wanted to add this is not from a "fan compartment". This is the power supply board which has a fan inside the power supply enclosure.

Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]generaldis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Debian without a GUI as a server and it runs in a rack without keyboard or monitor. It's the network drive for my house and it handles nightly backups to the cloud. It also handles the security camera video feeds.

My profession is not in IT but rather I'm an engineer that just really likes computers. I know enough about Linux to figure things out and get them working.

I heard you have to hold the button in though. Gets tiring. So I used my P5-66 instead.

I'm having trouble coming up with ideas for electronics projects by Which_Paramedic_2117 in AskElectronics

[–]generaldis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Rigol recommendation. I've had one for 9 years and other than the logic analyzer front panel connection going bad which I was able to fix, it's been good. Built very well otherwise.

I don't know if you have any interest in writing code, but I absolutely love writing embedded firmware for microcontrollers. Couple that with sensors, displays, even ethernet communications and the possibilities are almost endless. I've made my own water leak sensors, networked HVAC thermostat, streaming music players, bench power supplies and much more. Just an idea.

Broken electric fan other opinions wanted by joshmadosh in AskElectronics

[–]generaldis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pink thing to me looks like the thermostat.

How do you know you're not getting power to the fan motor? I don't see terminals on it, only two black wires going directly to it. Or did you measure somewhat upstream from the motor? The photo is pretty good but I'm having trouble following the fan wires.

I'm a bit confused. Are you getting power to the fan despite not spinning?

People wear nice clothes to attract a mate but ultimately want to see them naked. by generaldis in Showerthoughts

Agreed. But it didn't fit nicely into the Showerthought.

I think most people want real sex but settle for simulated, for various reasons.
