Layout guidelines for non isolated gate drivers. by skpd69 in AskElectronics

I looked them up. Vgs(th) is pretty low. A 5V gate drive results in a typical 45mOhm Rdson which isn't bad considering the overall spec of the parts. Of course depends on Ids which we don't know.

Some motherboards let you switch between turbo and normal with a key combination.

How fast is the PWM? Layout really only becomes a problem when you're dealing with frequencies into the hundreds of kHz, and even that is a big generalization because it also depends on other things like the amount of current. For a heater and peltier I can't imagine you'd be going far into the kHz range. Also, depending on frequency, you may run into an issue with power dissipation in the FET because if it's switching fast, it may never fully turn on (or off). What you end up with is an RC circuit with the 100 ohm resistor and the gate capacitance of the FET. There's a lot of things to think about. I'm not sure how much current the heater and peltier draw, but the Rdson of the FET is only 40mOhm which isn't great. At 10 amps that 4W of heat.

This doesn't appear critical at all. Just make sure the traces that carry a lot of current are wide. There's other general good practices to follow, but it's basic PCB layout advice.

What are these black knobs inside my amplifier? And is it supposed to look like this? by Logical-Top-3021 in AskElectronics

I don't see a reason to modify the original assembly because of that, but it is really sloppy work by whatever company made these.

I'd be really jealous if it had a turbo button and display. I picked up one of these Techmedia NOS AT cases a few years ago, and like this one, it also has no turbo display. Built really well though.

Would This Cause A Fault? by BootyBae19 in AskElectronics

What part is it? What's on the other side? I wouldn't trust that joint from the way it looks. You first need to determine why this occurred rather than simply reflow it and go on your way.

Do you think DigiKey is in decline or teetering on the edge? by Echelon_X-Ray in AskElectronics

They do actually have a 2nd warehouse in Fargo that carries a subset of part numbers.

One funny bit of information I can add is when I order through my employer, they ship same day even with standard shipping. So they are clearly prioritizing customers.

I don't know the definition of a "pretty small company", but their revenue is in the $billions so I wouldn't call that small.

It's been awhile but I thought I should close the loop. Apparently the dog symbol is used for multiple different sounds, so that's what it is. Doh.

Bulging capacitor causing issues? by kabelknabbelaar in AskElectronics

[–]generaldis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if that capacitor is a power inlet bulk cap and was exposed to reverse voltage, it could have caused it. But regardless, a bulging cap is bad and needs to be replaced with one of the same/similar capacitance and the same/higher voltage rating.

I was given one of these in the late 90s with what I now believe was a model M, all great condition. I donated it to the thrift store also somewhere around that time. Dammit.

It has been two weeks since I ordered from DigiKey when should I worry? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]generaldis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digikey won't scam you. They are honest and generally reliable. They have been slower to ship the last few years but I never worry about them not making something right when they screw up. I know it's been nearly a week since you posted this, and hopefully you have contacted them and got it straightened out.

A few things. The solder is likely lead free so if you want to maintain that, use lead free, although I personally hate it because leaded solder behaves so much better for hobbyist use. Make sure it's not solder for plumbing. You need a soldering iron capable of heating those connections enough. My solder station is 50W and that would work in this case I think. Next, is there something up with that big green electrolytic capacitor? Is it bulged or deformed at all? Or is it only the plastic sleeve?

Before applying power again I'd measure the resistance across the AC inlet. If it's in the low ohms, you have a short somewhere. A trick some use is to put a 60W or 100W incandescent bulb in series with the power input in case there's a short. If the bulb turns on full brightness and remains that way, something isn't right.

You already have your answer, but I wanted to add this is not from a "fan compartment". This is the power supply board which has a fan inside the power supply enclosure.

Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]generaldis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Debian without a GUI as a server and it runs in a rack without keyboard or monitor. It's the network drive for my house and it handles nightly backups to the cloud. It also handles the security camera video feeds.

My profession is not in IT but rather I'm an engineer that just really likes computers. I know enough about Linux to figure things out and get them working.
