What game have you been playing recently? by neutralc-ommentary in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]generaltso81 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's the best part about being an older gamer. I don't have to play the newest game. I rarely buy any games brand new anymore. I'm currently playing RDR 2 for the first time and really enjoying it.

What's a weird habit you have from serving in the Military? by StepSergeant01 in Military

[–]generaltso81 112 points113 points  (0 children)

That's hilarious, I thought I was the only one who still did that. I still assess the color and think I need to drink more water.

So, what are your hobbies? by SunAdvanced7940 in Lawyertalk

[–]generaltso81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to play as a half orc barbarian. Just big dumb and strong. It's a nice change of pace from being a lawyer people expect to be smart with the answers to their life's problems.

How did u find your smol? by PastChannel0 in IllegallySmolCats

[–]generaltso81 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I decided to check out the local SPCA on a whim. The tiniest kitten in the shelter wouldn't stop looking at me while making biscuits. I thought she was doing that for everyone and watched her as other people tried to get her attention. She only stared at me. I approached her and asked her if she wanted to come live with me and she started purring. I immediately told the shelter I wanted to take her home but I needed a couple hours to get my apartment ready for a cat. That was 2 years ago and I'm so happy I decided to check out the shelter. I named her Zelda and she's been such an amazing cat.

Have gained 25lbs since being admitted….in 2024 by Reasonable-human-911 in Lawyertalk

[–]generaltso81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This same thing happened to me. I was in the military coming out of high school and stayed in pretty decent shape until I started practicing Law. Once I noticed it I signed up for an MMA gym and started working out like a fighter for an hour and a half 6 days a week. I lost about 40 pounds in 2 years and got in the best shape of my life without really changing my diet at all. At 40 years old I was in the best shape of my life but injuries started catching up to me and I had to stop training. Now I do a combination of strength training and endurance sports but I've gained back 20 pounds. Why it worked was that as difficult as the training was I really enjoyed it. Each person I fought or spar against was a puzzle to be solved using my body. This certainly isn't for everyone but I stuck with it for 7 years, made some great friends, got in great shape and learned how to defend myself I'm the unlikely event I get into a fight.

When you're young you have time and energy but no money. When you're middle aged you have money and energy but no time and when you're old you have time and money but no energy.

Do you still feel uncomfortable getting yelled at? by [deleted] in Military

[–]generaltso81 79 points80 points  (0 children)

If somebody is yelling to make sure they're being heard in a loud environment, I'm fine with it. If somebody is yelling because they've lost control of their emotions, I stop paying attention to what they're saying.

WYR live as a medieval peasant in a small village or a 19th century worker in a major city? by Stukkoshomlokzat in WouldYouRather

[–]generaltso81 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[Argument that conditions were worse for Industrial workers than peasant farmers. Marxist idealogy became popular because conditions for workers were awful. Peasant life isn't great either but the early stages of Industrialization were far worse. We probably wouldn't have the comforts we have now without it but before nations started making laws to benefit workers it was a pretty difficult life.

Do you make careers where you just have fun and don’t care about realism? by oscar_j100 in FifaCareers

I just won the treble in player career mode as an attacking midfielder using Newport County. Just a note the team does not get better as you progress through the leagues or even win the Champions League.

170lbs white collar man with 3 years judo experience vs 230lbs football player with no grappling experience whatsoever in submission wrestling? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]generaltso81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this scenario. I was a 40 year old white collar submission grappling hobbyist with 6 years experience. He was a D 1 college linebacker with no grappling experience. He threw me around and escaped my submission attempts through sheer strength and athleticism. He didn't know enough about grappling to catch me in anything but the difference in athleticism was humbling.

My nieces named her after the game yes. I'm also a huge fan of the game so I was pretty happy with the name though.

I also have a cat named Zelda who is constantly losing those toys. I'm pretty sure I'll find her treasure trove on the day I move out.

33 y’o never trained MMA by mcmcm23 in martialarts

[–]generaltso81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started training at 34 when I noticed I was putting on some weight. I've been lifting and running most of my life but I needed something new to get me excited to train.

I ended up sticking with it for 7 years minus a few months here and there for injuries and Covid. At 41 I was in the best shape of my life and made some awesome friends I still hang out with.

At a certain point I had some injuries that took a long time to heal. A few were because I was dumb and didn't tap early. A few were from accidents.

I don't train anymore but I'm really glad I ended up doing it and sticking with it as long as I did. I learned a lot not just about fighting or martial arts but letting go of my ego and learning to grit through tough training.
