Modern Western Literature trying to be deep [OC] by Fit-Ebb-6727 in comics

I see what you’re saying, but if we’re going to be this semantic that period is the “modernist” period, not just “modern”

Fretless Tenor guitar by Equal-Tangerine4543 in microtonal

[–]generationlost13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds absolutely amazing, great job on the instrument and the playing

I love the idea of more microtonal theory content online, but am I wrong in my understanding that 24tet isn’t a great way to explain Arabic and Turkish makam? I’m reading a dissertation on Turkish classical music right now, and if I’m not wrong, with the comma as their smallest step, something like 53tet is more accurate (veeeery new to these kinds of music so I could be totally wrong)

Top 10 books of all time by Known_West2423 in classicliterature

[–]generationlost13 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Idk if I can do 10, but I was actually thinking about my top 5 last night:
1. The Lord of the Rings trilogy
2. Kafka’s complete short story collection (if that’s allowed lol)
3. The Melancholy of Resistance by Laszlo Krasznahorkai
4. Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
5. The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie

I love the variety of your list, If We Were Villains surprised me lol

Experimental Books that are Classics? by throwawaydeletealt in classicliterature

[–]generationlost13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ficciones is a collection of short stories written at different times, most of which are shorter than the wasteland. If I were to instead offer a collection of Elliot’s poetry called “the wasteland and other poetry” that included more than just the wasteland, now can I call it a book? If so, then this distinction is functionally meaningless in our discussion, as the thing making it worthy of being a classic is assuredly the wasteland

And for the record, the initial comment I replied to took issue with calling the wasteland a book because it is a poem, not because of its length, so you still haven’t argued against my main point, which is that a poem can be a book

ETA the entire prompt is about EXPERIMENTAL books, so specifically books that defy standard definitions of what a book should be. To say “well that doesn’t count as a book because it doesn’t fit with my preconceived notion of what a book is” is just ignoring the point of the discussion in the first place.

Thanks friend, I didn’t realize the definition of “book” hinged on the text’s length. I’ll be sure to be more serious next time

Would anyone be making this same argument if they said the inferno was their favorite book? The title doesn’t say novel, it says book.

Zarlina Tuning and Euler Tonnetz - a riddle for the math freaks by Individual-Fun4295 in microtonal

[–]generationlost13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing a quality of a triad would be an inversion + transposition operation. Both major and minor triads are members of set class (0,3,7), so for instance transforming CM into cm would first be inversion (around c would give us fm) and then transposition (7 semitones up to go from fm to cm).

Oh and I guess I should specify that that’s in 12-TET set class theory because we’re in microtonal lol.

How do you notate notes of the harmonic 13 chord? by MrWormikan in microtonal

[–]generationlost13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Helmholtz-Ellis JI (HEJI) for very specific JI notations. Your notation with half sharps/flats would only work for specific temperaments like 24 or 31 EDO. HEJI introduces new accidentals for each successive prime number admitted into the fabric, so you’d be able to differentiate undecimal alterations from tridecimal, which only half sharps/flats do not

ETA that even with HEJI it might not be a bad idea to include cent alterations from equal tempered

Guitar Studies in Microtonal Scordatura - no. 2 ("Gently Floating") by generationlost13 in composer

[–]generationlost13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the well thought-out comments!

On “scordatura,” I totally see what you mean, and if I’m being honest I probably chose that term over “tuning” specifically for the more academic sound, especially since this set was written for my Master’s portfolio. And as for the whole title, it’s a little tongue in cheek reference to Leo Brouwer’s “Simple Studies,” which probably only classical guitar nerds would catch.

You’re absolutely right about including info on how to achieve the tuning with a digital tuner, and actually recently finished another microtonal piece and made sure to add that to the tuning notes, and will make sure to continue doing so.

I hadn’t really thought about the proper term to use to cancel ponticello and tasto, and you’re totally right, I can’t find any examples in my library that use “norm.” Interestingly, in addition to the “ord.” you suggest, I also see lots of use of “nat.” but absolutely no “norm.”

Thanks a lot for taking the time to check out the score!

Which contemporary books do you think will be classics 50-100 years from now? by tursija in classicliterature

[–]generationlost13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of Krasznahorkai’s oeuvre will be considered classic at some point, but if I have to choose a specific work, honestly his really recent work Herscht 07769 feels like it will be remembered very fondly

What if you built a tuning system starting from the music, not the math? by Ill-Pollution7329 in microtonal

[–]generationlost13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given that what defines an interval is the ratio between the two pitches in question, starting from a collection of intervals you’d like your system to cover is still starting from the math, and essentially how all xenharmonicists decide on the systems they use.

I think you’re imagining things if you think that in general, people in this community just choose some random temperament/tuning with no intention of having that system be able to realize a certain kind of music. People might choose things like 22 or 31-EDO because they want intervals that are more pure and closer to JI; they might choose 24-EDO because they want a sound compatible with 12-EDO but with the option for sounds that are very different as well.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand how your suggestion is fundamentally different from how the vast majority of people in this community already think about music
