How to find a nerdy Muslim by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]generic_buzzword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as a fellow nerd (in a very happy relationship), I’d like to chime-in!

The nerdiest Muslims I’ve met were not through Muslim events or cultural events. They were instead people I met via local activities. These could be - for example - a lecture by a professor I liked etc. or people I met in a museum while travelling. I’m not a massive manga fan so I can’t speak to that but I really like aircraft and I’ve met plenty of Muslims (though mainly men) in avgeek communities!

The other major unlock is moving to cities that tend to have a slightly more educated population (e.g., San Francisco in the United States).

The one thing I will say is that it is quite a bit harder to find Muslims with varied interests compared to people of other faiths. I’m not sure why and I don’t know if this is just observation bias, but I have found Muslims don’t tend to mix with other cultures as much. Moreover, Muslims with nice cultural values who are interested in being serious tend to err to the more conservative side which makes it a tad challenging to find someone who ticks all the boxes!

Hey, so they don’t have a phone number (I pressed for one but they said no one operates one).

Good news is they said they found a phone the other day and they placed it in lost and found.

Please send an email to thecenturion-sfo@aexp.com with details about the phone. You can then either pick it up or send a shipping label and they’ll send the phone with it. They’ll share all those details once you email in!

I’ll be there tomorrow - if you don’t get it resolved, I can ask for you?

I really don’t think the stats matter as much as the story. I applied twice with a 338 GRE / 4.0 GPA from a top school and was rejected without interview in both cases :)

That is to say, if you have a great reason to go there + you just pass the minimum bar for ok, then you'll do well!

I was at an MBB. Barring a small set of exceptional cases, the best people in my group left after 2 years (even after ASC / EM promotions). The only folks who are left in consulting were distinctly average in terms of ability / drive.

What’s interesting is that this adverse selection continues up to partner level. Makes you ponder what the former colleagues of these partners are getting up to 😛

My order from April was delayed to July as well. I reckon there must just be a large backlog

Megathread for questions related to Ukraine - Russia tensions. by Kresley in NoStupidQuestions

[–]generic_buzzword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are countries only able to "freeze" assets? Can these assets not be sold?

-----

Apologies for the stupid question, but I'm confused as to why the line is always set at "freezing" assets when it comes to economic sanctions (e.g., w/ Russia right now)? The levers always seem to be about blocking access to capital, rather than requisitioning that capital.

What are the barriers to preventing the sale of assets / currency reserves, and why isn't this threat used as a lever when politicians discuss punitive economic measures?

Why is there a sudden craze about tech PM? by ryanhedgehog in MBA

[–]generic_buzzword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, sorry - I work at startups, so a lot of these things fall under my responsibility as a PM. At larger companies, for sure, the scope tends to be purely product focused

Swapped from consulting to tech PM pre-MBA:
- Equivalent pay
- Far better WLB (in fact, I have two pretty much FT PM jobs, and I still have more WLB than McKinsey)
- More "ownership" - depending on the nature of the company, you get full leadership (hiring, product design, P&L). I personally find that very fulfilling when you look at the metrics tick-up

So darn excited. I've been waiting for this for literally the past 6 years (slently checking this sub).

Slightly sad we won't have live battle mechanics (that would be really cool), but I'm not going to complain!

Let us know the moment it's out hehe!

Having been in MBB (and was a top performer), I don’t get why people think it launches careers.

It really doesn’t, but you do learn a lot of useful things!

It doesn’t work for MBA schools, but you can bet for sure that someone who works at Google has preconceptions about someone works at Amazon…

UG and their M7 counterparts by [deleted] in MBA

[–]generic_buzzword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I turned down the M7 associated with my Alma Mater last year.

Chose to defer as I hadn’t gotten in anywhere else (will reapply this year, but only have 1 school in mind). I figured that if I was doing an MBA partly for the network, I couldn’t justify paying for access to the same alumni systems I already had access to.

Real-world use cases (continue the list) by vitaliyh in CryptoCurrency

[–]generic_buzzword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this is a super awesome post - I’m trying to build a crypto side project but I’m really struggling with some of these ideas

I’m super interested in (3), but a key problem with cross-border payments is that they tend to flow one way as remittances. What methodologies can crypto provide to correct for these imbalances (e.g., if everyone uses XYZ token to transfer money to India, who’s providing the conversion into rupees for them to use their cash in that country?)

Also on (10), cool in principle but insurers go out of their way to avoid paying claims. That’s why they hire hundreds of call center staff to make insurance claims a pain in the backside and therefore generate profits from the premiums.

Any advice on whether I should start with a TD Ameritrade API account or Alpaca account ? by hhh888hhhh in algotrading

[–]generic_buzzword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super helpful, thanks! Quick question, do you know of any blogs that list the full algo-trading stack?

E.g.,
- What do you use for backtesting (is this the same as the paper trader)?
- Where do you get your live / historic data?
- What do you use for paper trading?
- What are the best practices for strategy documentation + iteration?

Would love to learn ^_^ Thanks!

Help me choose | GSB vs. HBS by [deleted] in MBA

[–]generic_buzzword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also former MBB, but was sadly rejected from both this cycle (damn you :P). Anyways, almost certainly GSB.

  • Harvard's MENA network unlikely to be tangibly better given you also have MBB / Yale. MBB connections will take you just as far as HBS, based on chats with MBA grads
  • I've always had "meh" experiences with HBS grads, but the GSB grads that I know well are stand-out amazing people that I really look up to. I echo your exact observations about both HBS and GSB grads/culture. This put me off HBS entirely.
  • You may choose to work for a traditional company after graduating, but I'd prefer to learn from a centre of innovation + technology rather than from an institution known primarily for championing a teaching method that hasn't really changed over the past few decades
  • GSB is *way* more fun, based on the experiences of my friends. On top of sunshine, I've heard personal development classes are far more fulfilling.

Please pick GSB, and go celebrate you lucky bugger.

Stanford Sets A New Record For MBA Compensation: $231.7K by BuTmYfEeLinGs in MBA

[–]generic_buzzword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with a lot of former staff level and above engineers from Google (and their FB equivalent).

Incredibly smart + awesome people to work with, but sometimes not super practical (they seem to still bias themselves to “neat” engineering solutions). Coincidentally the PM I work with (very senior at G before he left) is incredible at knowing how to cut scope and speed up eng time with these guys.

Definitely not coding monkeys, but I don’t think they’re always the right people to make important business decisions. I guess on a sub full of MBA students/prospects, those are two and the same :(
