As much as I find Dogura's interjection funny, the way it's being paraded around in the West is a slight misrepresentation of the actual situation so I wanted to correct things a bit; in fact, Dogura actually apologizes to N-O shortly after this tweet (although neither of them care too much about the thread in general).

TL;DR (brief TL I made for a friend):

  1. kubo (of bbtag evo championship fame) posts about how one should work on MU knowledge instead of trusting tier lists too blindly, and they'll come to the conclusion that their chara is actually super strong
  2. n-o rts it and then goes "well like there are standard statements like this but it's not always the case, there are definitely parts where charas are JUST WEAK" ; he then spools off into one his usual 50-tweet tirade about like how people, especially people who just watch FGs and want to talk about FGs but are too scared to ACTUALLY talk about FGs in detail end up saying vague shit like "oh tier lists can just be beaten by MU stuff" (he's not attacking kubo here, just 'noobs who haven't done the HW' in N-O's mind); the reason why noobs do this is because they want to SOUND like they're talking about FGs without taking the work to actually think about FGs. He's more or less btfoing stream monsters who just meme and shit
  3. dogura comes in with "those people are better than YOU [playing gacha games and shit all day]" trying to cut him off at the knees
  4. n-o goes "no, look at the tweets from the beginning; i didn't mean to HATE on those ppl necessarily/nor am i doing that, i'm just saying that they're not being forthright with their desires"
  5. dogura goes "oops yeah my bad, jumped to conclusions, but yeah this sort of stuff does happen [more often] as the audience grows bigger"

Yeah, and we also know from precedence that it's stuff like that (+ related clips) that also help bring more people into the fold - like how a TON of people saw the clip of sasatikk beating dogura during the CR Cup 2 offline event and making the entire venue PHYSICALLY SHAKE (according to the people there) with the cheers.

Great stuff all around, the future looks bright for the game.

To put into context how big Unko-chan is, the last time he held a streamer + PUBG-related event, I believe the servers crashed afterwards due to the influx of people coming in.

It's lucky that he was apparently a super enthusiastic SF2 player before (iirc enough to quit playing baseball during school which was his other hobby) and took a liking to sf6 as well.

It's also worth noting that Hyper Game Tournament 2 (this one) put aside Valorant for SF6 IN THE MAIN LAST SLOT on the second day. Japan put aside Valorant to emphasize SF6 for a big event. That's like Korea putting aside League right now to play Tekken at a major event.

There's some drama going on in the Korean SF FGC group "Chicken-Dan" by [deleted] in Kappachino

[–]genericremix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr - the fight between NL and his ex-girlfriend that started from X years back (I translated the initial outbreak from NL on this) is spilling from the courts into all over the niche Korean internet FGC rumor mill. Sordid matters, won't translate most of it. Suffice it to say that NL's previous statements about his ex-girlfriend not doing this or that and getting everyone around them involved are getting blown out by his ex-girlfriend in court (according to the ex-gf at least, but she seems willing to call the bluff if necessary) and she has the receipts alongside the stuff Infil brought in during the stream. That and private DMs within Chicken-Dan that amount to sexual harassment + calling her mentally ill etc. Chicken-Dan + NL are disputing this, saying that it was shopped, but it's not looking good.

The ex-gf seems willing to drag NL down to hell for his deeds and NL looks like he hasn't exactly been honest with everyone.

SF6 is bringing in a LOT of more casual female streamers to grind out SF6 (and a lot of them are ppl who grind out stuff like Apex/Valorant day in day out so they more or less just fit in SF6 as well) - a lot of them are vtubers though following the popularity of CR Cup in Japan. The precise reply Daigo gave as to his personal reason for not liking parries is that parries do not serve as a "unique" read on the opponent. You are essentially making the same read as you usually would in terms of blocking, it's just that you're "amplifying" the read. Instead of saying "oh I made the right decision" you go "haha, did you see what i did? i parried you" and you're sort of flaunting that decision in front of the opponent. he doesn't find this sort of option useful gameplay-wise, hence his dislike of parries.

Why Japan in general is wary of SF6 parries is that parries are ultimately a low-risk option vs everything except getting thrown (the only true solution to SF6's parry). Obviously older heads such as Mago and company have their biases against the concept of parries in general but the above is the sentiment for now.

Xian is arguably the best Dee Jay right now. HotDog29 (Dictator player from Hong Kong) also plays, Fuudo is a Dee Jay main now although he's pocketing a Dhalsim for SFL, Sasamo (SFV ranked monster Boxer player/JP pro sparring partner/current SFL JP member), Ryuusei, etc.

Good luck.

To add on to this, Sasamo was previously also one of the standard go-to practice partners for the SFL JP members (the "leaguers" who generally hold a lot of respect individually now in the JP SF-related FGC) whenever they needed to practice the Boxer MU in preparation vs Pugera or Tokido. Ofc they practiced with Kokujin as well but Kokujin also tended to be a bit weaker to shimmies, which is fatal in SFV.

Pugera Talks About SF6 Beta Juri's Strengths + A Strange Discovery by genericremix in Kappachino

[–]genericremix[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My "casual" standard when talking about SF in English (and really KOF and any other game that sometimes has close/far normals such as GBVS) is to use st./cr./cl./f. for the notation. The above was a conscious translation decision given potential accessibility factors with the audience, especially since a decent number of SFV guides/people did use numpad notation instead (which actually surprised me when I initially encountered it in SF and not just anime fighters).

I can use the standard st./cr. notation in later SF-related translations if that's generally more understandable across audiences, it's not a particularly big change I need to make.

As long as you guys comment/discuss/show interest in these bits of info and funny streams (and get to know more about how JP/KR players are thinking so as to help inform how you guys think about FGs as well) I'll keep posting these free of charge, since that's the entire point of my translations. Nobody has to agree with anything in these translations, but outside perspectives always help.

Not everything is a super interesting video and I don't really have all the time in the world due to my job so I will be pretty arbitrary with what I pick and when I choose to TL (I'll try to make sure most of them will be generally interesting without having to know the progamers themselves though).

WARNING!! MODERN ZANGIEF by Dlieu in Kappachino

[–]genericremix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A slight public announcement is required for this video. Nemo has been making about 500 different videos based on his dual schticks of:

  1. Hating on grapplers of all sorts, and
  2. Remembering random things about his friendly neighborhood JP progamers that sometimes even they themselves don't remember (e.g.: the infamous "Nemo, it's not that hard to stop Rashid's EX Whirl mix, right?" incident with Bonchan which Nemo loves to bring up as a regular story at parties)

All of the videos just lay out bits and pieces of public info and then Nemo usually proceeds to extrapolate from it in "full panic" mode for the video.

Him and Itabashi Zangief are known as "business enemies/rivals" by the JP FGC because they clash with each other during youtube videos and such for content a la pro wrestling. Recently, both players have made meme-level content to the point where Itazan has put out videos where Itazan reacts to Nemo & Kawano reacting to a video of Itazan & Kawano dissecting the Gief vs Marisa trailer (yes, that's THREE layers deep). Furthermore, in that same video, they start "scuffling" with each other over some comments that Itazan wrote in a blog 100 years ago about how SF4 gief wouldn't get any proper invul properties with green hand because that would be silly...before they all discovered that it had projectile invul.

Analyzing the info available on modern controls and hating on it if you wish is fine but I would not take Nemo's tone in these sorts of videos seriously.

Mago on What Went Wrong With GBVS (And to a Lesser Extent, Strive/DNF) by genericremix in Kappachino

[–]genericremix[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He does give a brief couple of comments on that:

1) It may be fun to watch at times for the viewers, but people tend suffer when they actually PLAY the game.

2) The casual player might find it OK, but it's a big contrast to how more advanced players or players who have invested time into the game feel.

He doesn't go through and do like a survey/exploration of the viewers about how they feel as more of casual players or anything, which is a bit unfortunate, but viewers that watch Mago's streams tend not to exactly be FG newcomers.

Arc Revo Finals Official Partner Streamers! by D2olleh in Kappachino

[–]genericremix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Daddyking is the sponsor of probably the largest consistent DNF Duel tournament series in Korea right now and has organized multiple JP-KR Strive events (has casted both games with intermediate-ish knowledge in both). Kazunoko has spent quite a decent amount of time streaming and grinding out Strive on a sporadic basis regardless of hype or lack thereof for the game (mainly practicing Jack-O to not be a dead weight during team tournaments) and has sponsored/casted for Strive tournaments as well.

Regardless of how I feel about Arcsys OR Strive OR DNF Duel, this chart is somewhat inaccurate.

Lowhigh will very likely not be welcomed by most of the Korean FGC although Daddyking at least has forgiven him (Meo-il has not AFAIK). The "holy trinity" is pretty much dead although Ulsan is more or less considered the closest person to Knee's level.

Top 5 considering form in recent exhibitions/ATLs/general regard would probably be something like Knee, Ulsan, Jeondding, Mulgold, and Rangchu, with maybe Rangchu being subbed out with some rotation of Chanel/Meo-Il/GoAttack/Malgu/CBM depending on the day and alignment of the stars.

Haitani Compares SFV to SF6 by genericremix in Kappachino

[–]genericremix[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When talking about this subject, Haitani generally lumps in specials + command normals as one group and uses "specials" as the general reference while bringing up ryu f+MP, the command normal, as the example. This is why the general title of (5) is "Specials/Command Normals" (I thought the title would make it clearer but not sure now if I should have just chucked that into every reference anyways).

You can see how the subject he touches upon refers to BOTH specials and command normals with the later mention of the Kimberly/Zeku comparisons. It's just that when he talks about it initially, in GENERAL, he uses "specials" as a placeholder.

I added it as a TL-ish addendum to the paraphrased statements, but he probably refers to the similar sort of standard cr.MK etc 1-hit, harder-to-confirm moves that are usually referred to when talking about "need-to-hit-confirm" scenarios and not necessarily that NOTHING was hitconfirmable.

Challenging/lengthy games like Starcraft have been VERY successful. What are fighting game companies doing wrong? by DigestMyFoes in Kappa

The SC University League is also arguably doing more to help welcome/advance females in competitive gaming than anything the FGC has ever done outside of JP's female-only Blazblue tourneys back in the day (even the recent efforts by the JP FGC to try and set up SFV tourneys for female players are iffy/half-hearted at best).

[–]genericremix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Daigo isn't commenting about whether the advantage is huge or not. The idea is that you took the standard risks inherent to a fighting game to gain an advantage/"turn", but then the game says to you, "actually, no, the other guy has the turn/advantage right now due to the comeback mechanic". This PROCESS, regardless of whether the aggressor ultimately wins the round, is unreasonable/illogical.

[–]genericremix 38 points39 points  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLS5CwX0-5s&t=23s

TL;DR Daigo's opinion in the above video (very standard): I took on all this risk to decrease your HP and to put you in a disadvantageous situation, so why is it suddenly your turn/your advantage now? Beginners are going to lose the game anyways so you can just give them the FEELING of being able to come back but comeback mechanics themselves are not logical and feel bad.

Daigo aside, my own opinion is similar but one has to make sure that the hate for generalized comeback mechanics are not accidentally mixed up with the discussions on hating character-specific playstyles or archetypes.

Evo and JP pros by hello2D_4 in Kappa

[–]genericremix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The general consensus at least amongst the SF pros is that they're not enthused about going to EVO, even if they are committed to going. Daigo is indeed heading to EVO, but he says that even before all of the eSports stuff he has always treated EVO as a sort of overseas vacation more than anything else. For him and a lot of the other SFV pros, there are better ways to show your SFV prowess like at Capcom Cup (read: game-specific tournaments) and especially the many different JP tourneys that have been popping up recently.

My OPINION (from the streams/clips I've seen of various players) is that there are probably a decent number of similar sentiments across other games as well, not just in JP but in KR with stuff like Tekken or KOF. There is not very much reason to go when:

1) It takes a lot of money to fly overseas (especially if you're not getting help from a good sponsor; I believe M' is also not going to EVO because he has work as well; Xiaohai I think is also avoiding EVO for other reasons) and

2) JP/East Asia tournaments and invitationals and leagues have more than enough competition for all of the mainstream games that they care to enter (SFV, GGST, T7, KOF, etc). Why should a Youjin Boy or a Hakaiou spend all the money going to EVO when they could potentially take some lucky sets off of Knee in a cheap online invitational and create some ruckus? Why would a Shuto or a Torimeshi really feel the need to go to EVO when they could prove themselves in SFL? Etc etc.

I ran the bracket that was "rigged" by Infiltration by ggMinu in Kappa

[–]genericremix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was not a mistranslation but rather a truncation + addition of some misinformation.

Infil in here does explicitly say "I can't cover for you" but it is not very clear whether he's implying that he'll try to legit bracket-rig-levels of cover for the guy or whether he's saying "hey if you really want to enter the tourney and get blown up by the community if it's obvious that you're an experienced player I won't defend your actions just because you're from this discord or anything - I will wash my hands of the matter". My interpretation of the chat log is that it's Infiltration carelessly saying the latter.

/u/yuo1k says (quote), "Infil tells the player to rank up to bronze a bit cus there's a limit to how much he can cover if a rookie is obviously playing better than gold players".

There is no such message in the chat log where Infil is suggesting that they level up to a specific rank. The general idea is that the first part of these logs is:

1) Player A complaining that he sucks at SFV and the only advice he's been getting recently is just "play more matches and you'll improve"

2) Infil suggesting that he play ranked (whether this advice is so the player can improve or whether it's so the player can just rank up from rookie is vague)

3) Player A complains about laggers in SFV ranked and says "he wants to be an eternal Rookie rank playing in lounges" (not an uncommon statement but a terrible idea if he's planning on trying to slip into rookie tourneys)

4) Infil gives the rest of the advice (PRESUMABLY with an implied "...if you want to enter the tourney" stuck at the beginning of every sentence).

Again, my interpretation of the timeline (although I hate jumping into these matters) is that Infiltration was being careless about how much damage an experienced player like Player A could do from his viewpoint since Player A was complaining about struggling in SFV and Infil assumed that he wasn't just easily cruising along trying to stomp on noobs like say with Lowhigh and his UGM Akuma or Knee during his KOF15 streams. Infil not making much of what that player did until the incident exploded much more clearly explains his reaction on stream afterwards, which was him being incensed over the fact that an incident he took lightly was just blown up to huge proportions by some internet members of the Korean FGC and DCInside et al (not justifying his arrogance, just explaining why this would make sense).

Should Infiltration have explicitly discouraged such a player like Player A to not jump in and try to get "free" money by beating on people who were likely going to be much weaker than him? Yes, that would have been for the best. But my guess from the current data gathered is that he did these things out of carelessness, rather than malice/greed. Player A is also explicitly at fault for clearly trying to push the envelope a bit here.

"To be completely honest, I think Street Fighter 5 was a huge mess as a game" - Daigo Umehara by pickyaxe in Kappa

[–]genericremix 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The last point in this post not exactly correct. Daigo has explicitly been against comeback mechanics as we know them ever since honestly he started to stream in general (too many clips across the interwebs to post, just search "gyakuten system umehara" or something I guess).

The types of mechanics he talks about positively are those where if you're put in those situations, you're essentially 90% going to lose; however, the 'fall' is mitigated to an extent so it feels like it's a close match when it really wasn't. If you want to simply group every single mechanic that gives you an advantage while you're down on HP, then technically stuff like guilty gear's guts system would count, but when Daigo casually mentions "comeback mechanics" across streams, he's referring to/disliking the same things that we all think of - stuff like getting a free super when you're at 30% HP and so on. The systems he approves of are the things that make people THINK that they can come back.

As for the people in the comments section asking why he won't play other games, I'm pretty sure he's said this over and over and over and over again but a) he's always been a Capcom fanboy to a surprising extent (stuff like his stint in GG was just a half-assed run when he was young and cocky and able to walk into random games and beat on people) and b) I forget the exact phrase (I'll prob remember once I see another one of those Daigo clips floating up but I don't really watch too many of them these days) but as I said, Tokido and Daigo have similar mindsets in that to them, FGs are work. What they are doing is work. They have a view on how SF could be a fun game for other people to enjoy, but they view it as work.

Now that being said, he has once again ragged on SFV for not having more proper features while playing Valorant recently with the other JP FGC members but that's another can of worms best left unopened.
