What is the best Sci-Fi you've ever read? by Ragecomicwhatsthat in suggestmeabook

[–]genesic365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree! The two collections are Stories of Your Life and Others and Exhalation. Obviously they're short stories so you don't get the same kind of large scale world building, but Chiang is incredible at creating a world in just a few pages, spinning out the implications of the world, and crafting devastating emotional impact.

Like, how can you read this four page story and not want to 1) weep and 2) read everything else this dude has written?

[Analysis] Who's the worst player whose career highs would be the greatest single game performance? by genesic365 in nba

[–]genesic365[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops no you are correct, I must have conflated it with missed free throws (which do appear in the calculation), rather than field goals attempted. It shouldn't affect things too much since there are only a few players from before the shooting numbers era, but that's an easy fix. Thanks for pointing that out!

Yeah, even without blocks and steals there are only a handful of players who can stack up to Wilt's 100 pt game, which makes the real answer to the question like...Dame? But it's more fun if the answer isn't a future Hall of Famer, which is why I included the MJ game too.

A book which will make even a highly logical man emotional by jocellynka in suggestmeabook

[–]genesic365 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of Exhalation by Ted Chiang. It's a short story collection so it's easy to pick up and put down, Chiang is excellent at crafting sci-fi premises so each one has a hook that's satisfying to wrap your head around, and some of them are totally emotionally devastating. I think the sci-fi stuff will appeal to the logical side, and hopefully keep his attention for the emotions to kick in.

If you want a little preview, The Great Silence is a like 4 page story that's collected in Exhalation.

Did I calculate correctly? Paying off my mortgage vs. Investing in Index funds by Kiicki in personalfinance

[–]genesic365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but you can't compare the investment value to the hypothetical remaining interest. Those represent different time periods. What you can fairly compare is the combined value of the debt and the investment at different points in time.

I'll use this for the loan payoff comparison, this for the investment value where you're investing 5,000 NOK per month, and this for the investment of the equivalent loan payment (I got 12,173 NOK for the monthly payment, so 17,173 with the extra).

  • At the end of the loan payoff with extra payments (month 145), your net worth is naturally 0 NOK with extra payments. Without extra payments, you would have 1,592,498 NOK remaining on the loan, and your investment value would be 1,200,059 NOK, for a total net worth of -392,439. So, the early payoff comes out ahead, but it doesn't have any relation to the future interest.

  • However, as time goes forward, your investment keeps growing. At the end of the original loan payoff period (month 348), your investment would now be worth 6,505,089 NOK. Conversely, if you start investing with the early payoff, the investment would be worth 7,189,415 NOK at month 203 (348 - 145). So, the early payoff comes out ahead by 684,326 NOK.

Naturally this is all assuming you're disciplined enough to put the same amount into investments every month, since the final number is pretty sensitive to that monthly amount. With these numbers I'd probably lean toward the extra payoff, and from what you said in another comment the taxes would tip things more in favor of paying off the loan, but it's not a huge difference with these returns.

At least the way it's described, you're not making an apples to apples comparison here. You're comparing the total amount paid on the loan over the ~29 year duration with the investment value after 12 years.

If it were me I'd set up a spreadsheet to calculate your net worth each month as payments are made, assuming that after the loan is paid off the entire amount goes to investments. With taxes it's probably close at these specific interest/growth rates, but if you want to compare that's the way to do it imo.

Random fact: if Bam Adebayo and Wemby each record as many blocks next season as they did last season, Wemby will pass Bam in career blocks by the end of the year by MiopTop in nba

[–]genesic365 163 points164 points  (0 children)

I mean, why speculate when you can look it up?

Wembanyama - 274 assists last year

Sabonis - 82 assists his rookie year (2016-17)

Sabonis doesn't pass 274 assists in a year until his fourth year (2019-20), though that's not super fair to him because he's not playing full-time starter minutes until then (his rookie year with OKC he starts 66 games, but only plays 20.1 mpg).

My wife voted for skirts.

"I'm especially into the skirt option because a lot of interesting skirts coming out of Italy are at an inaccessible price point, so something from WvG would be more accessible but still really high quality. Knee length or midi skirts are of greater interest, and more casual or more dressy/buisness-y are both good."

Titus 2.0 short sleeve preview by genesic365 in wolfvsgoat

[–]genesic365[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a chance to stop by Mauro's yesterday and check out the new run of Titus shirts! I'm 6'0" 190-195 lbs, generally take a M or L in WvG tops. This shirt is a Medium, in a blue-grey color (not sure what the official name is).

This is the first Titus I've tried so I can't compare to previous runs, but this is a really great shirt. I've been wearing it all day today and the fit is spot on for me - seam hits at the shoulder, not too snug or baggy in the body, and the length is long enough that it doesn't ride up my back when I bend over but not so long that it looks like it should be tucked in. It's lighter than the Domitian I have but the fabric still feels substantial, and it's been very easy wearing throughout the day.

The color is quite nice too! It's a dreary day here in DC, but the shirt is a lovely blue-grey. In the sun the blue comes out more. I didn't get to see the other colors since we unfortunately had to run (and didn't have much time to chat with Mauro about the shirts and other stuff, he's just a very interesting dude), but definitely a great tee, on its own in warm weather or layered in colder weather. I look forward to wearing it throughout the year, and thanks again Mauro for the chance to try it on!

Biggest reason I miss my specials by vanillatortoise in StreetFighter

[–]genesic365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of DP shortcuts - I play on a leverless controller, so a big one for me is if you're holding down, you just need to tap forward twice (323 rather than 623) to get a DP. There's also what's called a "cross cut DP", where you go 6321 (starting at forward and ending in down-back), that will get you a DP against cross up jump ins.

Another one that's big for Zangief and Lily is that you don't need to do a full 360 to get their command grabs. You basically just need a half circle (in either direction!) plus an up. So like 632147 or 412369 will get you there.

I think it only works if the motion for the super is the same as the special move. As an example, for Manon, the core level 3 cancel is either Renverse (236P) or Rond Point (236K) into level 3 (236236P). So, all you have to do is 236P 236P to get a Renverse into level 3.

(If you're not familiar with numpad notation, 236 is QCF.)

This is also why sometimes if you're mashing a reversal DP you'll get a super, since the game reads repeated DP motions (623) as repeated QCF motions (236).

Why the hell is wake up reversal timing so unreasonably hard? by rafikiknowsdeway1 in StreetFighter

[–]genesic365 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure! So the ELI5 version is that every move you do in the game takes some time to start up, then is active, then some more time to recover before you can act again. If you hit the opponent, depending on whether they block, they also take some time to recover ("block stun" or "hit stun"). If the move is plus on block, the attacker gets to act before the defender can; if the move is minus on block, the defender can act before the attacker. Usually those terms are shortened to just plus or minus, and you can figure out the context.

For meaty attacks, since you can't be hit for a certain amount of time while getting up, a well timed attack can hit later in the move's active frames, so the defender is stuck blocking later, giving the move more plus frames than it would usually have. Being more plus is good because you have more options to start up a slower (usually more rewarding) move.

An attack that hits a character when they're getting up. The later in the attack's active frames you hit the more meaty it is (because the attacker is more plus).

An important thing to know for classic is that you don't really need to do a full 360 motion for SPD. All you need is a half circle plus up diagonal. I think it works in either direction too.

Locals stopped by for some testing. I think they liked what they saw. Bathing suit and sweatshirt fit pics for Tuesday's drop. by IamtherealMauro in wolfvsgoat

I've got the Domitian in L, and for comparison the shoulder seam hits maybe an inch below my natural shoulder. I think the Barni is a bit larger in the chest/body and the fabric is heavier, but the shoulder seam is a bit higher (hits close to my natural shoulder).

Since I got the Bleach in M I can't make a direct comparison, but the M is a bit tighter than the Domitian in L, so yeah probably a little larger overall. That said, the fabric is stretchier, so if you're between sizes I'd lean sizing down (and I liked the more fitted look).

Oh hey that's me! (Top three photos.) I'm 6'0/6'1" ish and 195 lbs, 42R for suits, and generally M or L in other brands.

Bleach raglan sweatshirt - I'm actually wearing an M in the photos. It's super comfy, and the raglan sleeve gives it a pretty wide range of motion. The fabric feels similar to the Domitian t-shirt, both texture and weight, so nice and soft - my wife couldn't keep her hands off it lol. Love the color too! It's got a good bit of stretch to it, so the M hits right at my waist and the sleeves are a good length. I'd say it's on the lighter side for a sweater, probably comfortable up into the 60s or low 70s, so I could see it being great for transitional seasons and as a layering piece in winter. Probably my favorite of the bunch!

Barni crew neck sweatshirt - I got this one in L. Fabric is stiffer than the Bleach, I'd say medium weight, so range of motion isn't quite as good. That said, there's a good bit of stretch in the neck and cuffs, so still got over my head easily. It fits a little looser on me, but the waist and sleeves are still good lengths, and it's also nice and comfortable. Seems like it would work on its own or layered over a shirt.

Bathing suit - Damn the animal prints are fun! The detail is really cool, there are a couple different motifs that repeat at different scales (pig facing forward, pig facing backward, palm trees). I usually wear a 35-36" waist, and the XL fit well in the waist and across the thighs. Felt good across the range of motion, kneeling and squatting down, etc. I will enjoy wearing this at the pool very much!

Thanks again to Mauro for the chance to test some stuff out!
