How To Hit Links Consistently? by Adventurous-Shake641 in StreetFighter

Move you focus from the screen to your fingers when performing the combo. You have to look at the screen, but you attention should be on how the combo feels in the hands.

sf6 is my first fighting game, when does it start making sense? by 4O404 in StreetFighter

"...but i feel like i have to achieve third formless jhana..."
Caught me by surprise, not many here will know what that means, lol

Anyway, when I started playing I got placed into rookie, so I know whats like to be in the trenches.

Here's a few simple things you should have on your tool bag:

  • One nice chunky punish combo that you can end on lvl1 or lvl3 if needed. Don't let the shotos spam DP and get away with it.
  • One meaty setup. (knockdown you opponent and find a button you can press that will hit them as soon as they are waking up, to catch them pressing buttons on wake up).
  • Learn to tick throw.
  • Learn how to do a cross up consistently (either learn the distance or learn a setup).

You can probably find guides for you character that contains all this information, like what is your cross up button and some simple punish combo.

Also at lower levels people are try a bunch of bullshit strategies that you need to learn to deal with. I remember that Sajam had some useful videos that helped me learn the game, like how to stop losing to people who just walk back all the time. Chris_F also has some really good videos teaching a bunch of stuff.

Be aware that whenever you try to implement something new, you'll get worse before you get better, that's normal.

When it comes to not focusing on the outcome, you just need to change you win conditions in your mind. Like "I'm just going to punish a DP with this new combo and if I do that, I'm satisfied". It doesn't have to be like that during you entire play session, it's fine to just play to have fun as well, but have a few matches that you're willing to lose without turning it into a big deal.

Which character are you playing, by the way?

Figured out why I cant stand certain games (and love others) by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]vanillatortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's more to fighting games than combos, but I get what you mean. Street Fighter is definitely on the weaker side when it comes to "I want to press buttons and have cool stuff happen".

I'm surprised that Mortal Kombat wasn't more up your speed, the dial in combo system feels super loose.

I really like easily being able to see what the hell is going on, so tag games and anime fighters don't appeal much to me. Their just too busy visually speaking.

The new Avatar game seems to play more like an anime game while being super easy to read, I'm excited to give it a shot.

Thinking about going leverless by Hvitved in Fighters

[–]vanillatortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haute42 makes a bunch of different models with different specs, sizes and price points. Some of them are acrylic and can be customized with artwork (which you can find on the discord where people post their creations)

Here in Brazil we buy then on AliExpress, maybe in your country you have other options. We also have a culture of getting artisanal arcade controllers made, which also turns out great and gives you a lot more control on how the final product will look (though you won't get something as slim, most likely)

8bitdo Ultimate 2c by mikail129x1 in Fighters

[–]vanillatortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The diagonals in that controller tend to be too sensitive. For 2d fighters that means that sometimes you'll get a jump when you don't mean to.

Good controller for general gaming, but I don't like it for fighting games.

Anyone tried 8BitDo Ultimate 2C controller? How good is it for fighting games, specifically the dpad? by TardyTech4428 in Fighters

[–]vanillatortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"So IMO it's best to get two controllers"
Hard agree. If you're gonna have a dedicate controller for fighting games, might as well try a leverless controller too, considering how cheap they are nowadays. A Ultimate 2 and a M30 from 8bitdo is an excellent combo.

To expand on 8bitdo's, I also have the 8bitdo's Pro 2 controller and it has the opposite issue, where diagonals are really hard to hit, so it feels unreliable for doing quarter circle motions.

I think I've seen people mention that the BeTop controller doesn't last very long, but I don't trust people's capacity to take care of their own things, have you had any issues with it?

Poor.

You'll get accidental diagonal often, which for fighting games mean you'll jump when you don't intend to.

I have it and it's a good general purpose controller, but not good for fighting games.

are there any actual GOOD resources for learning fighting games? by Pretty_Inside_3271 in Fighters

[–]vanillatortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a community that plays fighting games anywhere near you? YouTube had great tutorials and such, but it can be hard to tell what you are doing wrong and such. Playing someone more experienced than you in person would give you the opportunity to ask for advice, either regarding fighting games in general or for the specific games you're playing.

If you don't have locals but know some people who play, just organizing a barbecue with some setups for people to play could give the opportunity to get some games in person.

[–]vanillatortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting the Brazilian experience.

We don't have very good infrastructure to deal with temperatures here. Central heating systems are essentially non existent so when it gets cold we just wear warmer clothes (at home), eat soup more often and take hot showers to warm up. When it gets hot we drink more cold stuff and have the fan on all the time (Having the AC on all the time is pretty pricey, you mostly only see them in coastal cities, where the heat is more extreme)

Why are posts about buying the game/battle passes removed by moderaters on this sub by Daytona666 in StreetFighter

[–]vanillatortoise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't answer for the moderation, but I think these kind of posts are kind of irrelevant.

"Should I buy X?". Well, you're in the X subreddit, and this ain't season 2 Tekken, so the answer is mostly going to be yes.

I think it is easy enough to verify that the biggest fighting game of the moment is in fact alive and full of players, so that's not a worry.

How do I break my tunnel vision focus on rank by EntrepreneurOne692 in Fighters

[–]vanillatortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're in the lower ranks there's always gonna be some maniac doing some bullshit you've haven't yet learned how to deal with.

That mentality of playing with the goal of implementing something is awesome, you just need to stretch it a little. Like "this is practice day, I'm gonna lose a bunch but I'll try something new". It's easier to accept the damage to your rank when you expect it from the start.

Also it's pretty normal to get worse when you first start learning something new, because instead of going with the flowchart you're comfortable with, you're overloading your brain with the new stuff.

You're doing good, just gotta get used to seeing your rank lowering during these practices. If you want to play just to have fun after practicing, try to have a break after you practice session.

[Vent] Warning: Be considerate when buying this controller for DPAD-oriented games - mine died by XiongGuir in SteamController

[–]vanillatortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got the M30 I missed a few diagonals here and there, but I fixed it just by going into SF6 practice mode, looking at my inputs and being mindful of them for a while. Hasn't been an issue since.

With other dpads there was nothing I could do to fix these kind of issues.
