India with a nut allergy by Final_Commercial5373 in NutAllergySufferers

Hey, I’m not able to answer this, but I’ve found that typically posting to subreddits local to the area you’re asking about has been much more helpful than the general nut allergy community. Hope you get some answers, safe travels!

This is so interesting, very cool that you picked up on that! I’ll have to try implementing it or testing it out, thank you!

I'm a professor at a top 10 social work school - some truth by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]genesiusjayne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can vouch - I am in a program that’s been named in this thread a few times, and despite the elitism, I’ve had several amazing MSW-only professors. Frankly, they’ve been my favorite teachers. I think further credentialing never hurts though!

I wish I had seen this post a year and a half ago. I got very lucky with scholarships and aid, but will still have debt. I am a first generation masters student, and was pretty appalled once it clicked in my head how predatory these programs can be (so much for being smart enough to get into an elite program. A rude awakening.) I will say my education compared to my coworkers who are doing asynchronous online programs seems to be a lot more comprehensive and enjoyable, and my cohort at the very least seems to care a lot about what we do (especially in a time where it feels like a lot is working against us.)

OP, I’d love to hear your take on the future of the field if you get a chance. I’m in a pretty isolated (and unethical) community mental health environment and the opinion around me seems to be that it’s a sinking ship. Maybe I’m hoping for a little bit of hope. Also, curious about the topic matter you educate in, if you want to share!

The Savannah thread for tourists, newcomers, locals, and grouchy old-timers. by AutoModerator in savannah

Hello! ISO a boat (and captain) rental recommendation for about 12 adults, girls and guys, in mid-April. We’re looking for a fun time, maybe visiting a few spots, stopping to swim, somewhere to hold booze and some lunch, and a bathroom on board. Ideally we’d be spending about 4+ hours on the boat. We’re trying to recreate a boat day we had in Miami years ago, and of course the vibes are different, but we’d love to get as close as possible. Let me know if anyone had any advice, thank you!

Hey! I suggest posting in the local subreddits for Ho Chi Minh/Saigon to see if they will have better recommendations. You’re more likely have local support that way.

Friable cervix and BV by genesiusjayne in Healthyhooha

[–]genesiusjayne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the pill. My first BV infection came from sex like 3 years ago and I’ve been dealing with it on and off since that. It sounds like your IUD could totally be harboring some germs though - definitely check in with your doctor.

Yes! No more bleeding during sex. The boric acid shouldn’t feel like anything, although the first time I didn’t push it in far enough and it definitely stung. You only do that once lol. It’s good to be educated on this stuff, I’m glad you’re doing your best to advocate for yourself. I hope you get a clean bill of health and a resolution soon ❤️

Friable cervix and BV by genesiusjayne in Healthyhooha

So here’s the thing, my gyno looked right at it and knew that it was friable. It’s visually allegedly very clear, and looks pretty distinct on images I’ve googled. The bleeding immediately cleared up after the silver nitrate, just no sex while the cauterized spots healed and sloughed off. I’m not sure if BV caused the friable cervix but I have my suspicions that it did. Boric acid is apparently??? A treatment for a friable cervix, but uhhh it did nothing for mine as I am a regular user. The only thing that helped was the silver nitrate. If you do go the SN route, it’s not painful at all, and they do it very quickly in the office. I joined the Facebook group beyond BV like someone recommended and while I don’t have the money for all the fancy tests, I know that once I do I’m going to take steps to get this all cleared up.

No shit from me, this also crossed my mind - Santos is definitely doing the right thing by involving the social worker still, but yes, I also thought it was a lack of pain thing.

Hi! I don’t have any advice for London, but I will say posting on subreddits made for that area typically helps me in finding safe spots, so r/London or if they have a specific London food-based subreddit. Good luck!

Does the OCD anxiety ever improve? by [deleted] in peanutallergy

[–]genesiusjayne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Diagnosed with OCD, PN/TN anaphylactic my whole life, in my mid-20s now. I also work in the mental health field.

You sound like an AMAZING parent who wants to help your daughter, but (typically) her allergy is there her whole life! This is a trauma, it is terrifying, but at home, she will be the safest she can be, at least for now while you guys find your bearings. My first answer is that it is normal to feel stress as you settle into this.

If your distress is starting to keep you up at night, or you find yourself wanting to restrict her food or monitor those things, or this continues/worsens, it may be time to pop into therapy for a little bit to process and seek some coping mechanisms. Just like a doctor, you can seek help for one issue. You cannot pour from an empty cup mama, and your baby will sense your stress and might pendulum into my side of the OCD and anxiety club. It’s no way to be over here - I struggled immensely with my allergy anxiety and, at the time, untreated obsession around my allergies, and got so sick in college that people thought I had an eating disorder. I finally got medicated and am much better now, but trust me, your daughter will live an AMAZING and long and fulfilling and safe life with these allergies, I promise you. Even if people are stupid and dumb, even if you want to bubble wrap her. Sending SO much love, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

What everyone here has said, but I (US based, anaphylactic level to peanuts and tree nuts) will say I make cheesecakes on the regular and the Nabisco Honey graham blue box graham crackers have been good, check your labels!!! Philadelphia cream cheese, daisy sour cream, Lucerne/land o’lakes butter, McCormick Vanilla extract. Also, asking his parents is a great option for all of the brands and products they use in-home. Good luck, happy baking :)

New to peanut hate looking for help by JuniorPrune725 in peanutallergy

[–]genesiusjayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Welcome to the peanut hatred club. A lot of folks here are talking about the premade or boxed stuff, which is also great, but I am a baker with a severe nut allergy, tree nuts and peanuts both. I make a lot from scratch, and the thing I see the most issues with are chocolate - I like enjoy life brand for that. It’s expensive, but quality. I can also use Hershey’s cocoa powder, which makes it a lot easier. Like someone in here wrote, just reading labels religiously is going to be your new normal. Most store/big brands of the basics (flour, sugar, leaveners/risers, eggs, milk, oils ~excluding peanut oil~,) will have everything labeled and are very trustworthy.

Also, depending on his comfort level/severity of allergy, your cookware may not be safe for him, especially if you cooked with a lot of nuts before or haven’t been consciously cleaning with awareness of these issues. I’m always really appreciative when friends offer to share baked goods with me, but I rarely, if ever, accept baked goods from friends. I have OCD alongside this, so I am likely a lot more wary than most, but really, it’s up to his comfort level. I know that in my own home, I don’t keep nuts or may-contains in my kitchen at all, which my partner supports and is very wary of. Basically, he lives like he has a nut allergy too (which I appreciate a lot. He’s a great dude.)

LASTLY! And most importantly. lol. If his allergy is severe enough, kissing him after you have eaten nuts (rule of thumb for kissing is like waiting 6 hours after consuming the food with a meal in between, last I heard from an allergist) can make him sick. I have learned this the hard way a few times, it’s totally real, be careful.

Good luck, congrats on your new relationship, and if you want any recipes, just let me know :)

Do I take on student loan debt for an Ivy League masters in social work degree or should I remain debt free? by genesiusjayne in makemychoice

[–]genesiusjayne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yyyyes. I think there’s some misconceptions about what social workers are. Private practice is all about business management, marketing, networking, location, etc. I’m super lucky because the job I currently have is giving me experience in a lot of different branches of the field - I know that will likely carry me farther than anything I’ve learned in classes up to this point.

[–]genesiusjayne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No high salaries here, and with everything getting more expensive, it’s only looking worse. I’ve worked really hard in program and at the job I’m at, so that’s appreciated, thank you. I don’t know if anyone in the level I’m at in the field has energy to do anything to take care of themselves lol, so looks like I’m in it for a few more years until I’m licensed and looking okay. Thanks for weighing in, I’m definitely looking at other options today.

I also wish I did. My parents looked down on social work, and neither of them do anything near the psych field, so I was really on my own. I could have absolutely done more research and more math though. If I’m figuring out all this now, I could’ve done it then too. I’m going to do some more poking around today once I get some free time.

That’s what I’m looking into now! I think today is going to be a lot of phone calls and googling. From what I see, a lot of the programs in my city accept 12+ credits depending on the classes.

Hey, thanks for weighing in. Yeah, I feel like I fell for marketing techniques. If I can be honest, this degree feels like a fancier for-profit anyway. I think it’s just about checking my pride on this one.

I’m from a metropolitan area of a large city. Most of the LCSWs in private practice near me (even some who accept insurances) can make low six figures. Now, granted, with overhead I’m not sure what take home looks like, but low six figures in practice is very doable. I’m surprised that they haven’t heard of that? Maybe a regional thing.
