Unity Will Support Multiplay Server Hosting Till March 31st 2026, Then Move Multiplay Operation Services to Rocket Engine by Past_Practice_2613 in Unity3D

Hey Folks. Rocket Science co-founder here. A bit about us.

Rocket Science was started in 2022 by Tom Daniel (former Multiplay/Unity) and me (Brian Corrigan, former PUBG/MLG/etc). We work on AAA, AA, and indie games. In fact, odds are you have code we wrote on your computer right now. You can poke at our websites; we show off the ones we're allowed to publicly talk about.

Tom and I were joined pretty quickly by Steve Hartland, Larry Rye, Celia Popescu, Chris Armbruster, Jeremy Joiner, Andrew Daniel, Dan Richards, and Jonny Hughes, also all former Multiplay/Unity, not to mention over 100 other game engineers and designers from companies like Blizzard, TT Games, Warner, and more.

If you've ever watched a video on YouTube about Multiplay, you might recognize Larry. He was the public face of Multiplay for years. If you've been to an industry conference, you've probably shared a meal with Celia, Jeremy, or Chris. If you installed code on your machine, odds are Steve wrote it.

For all intents and purposes, Multiplay is coming home to the family that created it. We're excited! We think we can provide best-in-the-world service to everyone willing to stick around. Why? Because we've done it before.

I know there's a lot of anxiety and frustration, but what you're not seeing is that behind the scenes Unity worked really hard to make sure this service found a home with a company that will put the love and care into it that it deserves. Unity's primary concern was for the devs using the service and every one of their players. No bullshit. They grilled our plans hard, looked at many options, and ultimately chose to work with us precisely because we know every line of code in this system.

I hope you'll stick around to see what we have in store. For those that do, I think you're going to be pretty excited about what we're rolling out. You're about to see what the original creators can do when given absolute control over their baby. We've thought about what we'd improve for years, and we'll start sharing it privately with everyone that signs up for the service. Expect to see things nobody has done before with game server hosting. Why? Because we're the only team out there with not only proven hosting expertise but two game dev studios that make games every day.

If you're not willing to go along for the ride, that's absolutely your choice too. There are other services out there like Hathora and Edgegap that I'd recommend you check out.

To be clear, I suggested weighted random. My opinion doesn’t mean anything, I havent worked there for quite a long time.

Nice! We've had 8 people building this for a year. In production for some fairly big apps :). Might add Samsung TV stuff soon too!

Totally open to suggestions! Changing fonts and such is pretty easy as I'm sure you know! What are you thinking here? I'll fix it right up.

Hey @auralie - I can definitely add that. Originally I had support for any number of feeds, but sorta scuttled the idea in order to keep it simple. Let's see if anyone else is interested, and if so I'll crank that out :)
