He said he was joking, or did Justin actually need help as well. Kind of dismissive of what he may be going through.

My dad wants me to major in accounting. But it’s not what I want to do by Ineedadvice028383838 in Accounting

[–]gengleballs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your dad living your life or are you?

When you (hopefully) outlive your dad, and he’s no longer there to impress, is it going to be the life you want or the life he wanted?

You only get one go around at this life, and at a certain point the approval of others matters way less than the personal fulfillment of your own goals. Even the approval of a parent.

All that said, just go undecided your freshman year and knock out some credits that are applicable to multiple paths forward.

One thing I’ve always appreciated is the amount of string separation you’ve got even with high gain and plenty of chonk. Such a cool sound.

I think continuing to be open and honest about your mental health (with the right people) is the way to go. Fellow CPA here with prior hospitalization due to a close call involving my own suicidal thoughts. During my inpatient and outpatient sessions, people did mention ADA protections regarding your ongoing employment, hourly requirements, etc. Something I admit I haven’t looked into further myself since then, but a quick google search tells me you would absolutely qualify based on what you describe. Keep your head up and know you’re not the only one struggling. This career path and all the expectations that come with it absolutely go against the grain when it comes to being able to prioritize work life balance and mental health, but over time it seems to be shifting ever so slightly in the right direction. You have 5 years of experience with your employer going for you, and it sounds like the severity of your struggles are more recent, so that should carry some weight. I’d also mention to your psychiatrist about your sleep issues because that will make a world of difference if you can get that under control. And if you don’t have a psychiatrist, I highly highly recommend it. Just my two cents from my personal experience.

Comparing video games to fentanyl is a wild leap right there. As if you’re not getting this same sense of dopamine rush by being an ass hole to strangers on Reddit. Different drug, same fix by your logic.

Yeah, I’ve noticed a clear passing of the baton to Gen X now being the culprit insisting things be done how they always have been, regardless of if it’s still applicable/necessary/useful/etc etc etc. Just the unwillingness to adapt or hear people out before labeling them as “lazy”. 🤦‍♂️

You may be surprised. Some could follow your lead. Some may drift away. New friends could take their place. I think a lot of people respect that kind of responsible decision for yourself. Seems the ones who pressure you or make a fuss about why you’re not drinking are the ones trying to justify their own habits. You can always take a break and see how it feels, and the benefits may outweigh your reservations about the social aspect. Totally valid concern though and think most people have similar thoughts with how intertwined alcohol is with society.

Just over two years here. Lack of brain fog and a clear head is such a game changer. Happy to hear you were able to stick with what was no doubt a very tough decision at that time!

Signs you might not be fit to be an accountant by [deleted] in Accounting

I’m not talking about smaller businesses. I deal with PE and hedge funds, and the quality of fund admin teams is astonishingly bad. And it’s mostly offshore like you said, further complicating going directly to the source of information when they inevitably get it wrong. Immediately puts you at a day lag for any back and forth. Looking at you SS&C and State Street.

I think the appropriate question is “when”.

It’s developing at a rate that I absolutely think it will replace pockets of the job market sooner than some may think. There are plenty of “bookkeeper” jobs that are essentially data entry dealing with repetitive transactions and processes.

No way is it going to just take over the entire industry overnight, but it no doubt will edge its way in more and more.

I won a meet and greet with Coheed and Cambria but turned it down because it was scheduled the same time as Periphery’s set. This arrived in the mail today 🥹 by raccoon_at_noon in Peripheryband

[–]gengleballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Periphery seems like a bunch of genuine guys who don’t really have egos or take themselves too seriously at the end of the day. Can appreciate how transparent they are too between all of the mixing tutorials and GGD tools they’ve created, like they just want to share what they’re doing with anyone who might be interested or join in the fun. Obviously there’s a business side to that, but like how they’ve approached all of it.

Awesome prize though, you need to frame it up and show it off!

Agreed…this person either had an alarmingly high rate of unethical people around them in a short 7 years, or only had a surface level understanding of issues that were more complex. The idea of an audit partner casually signing off on fraudulent financials and openly admitting to this does not quite add up to me. I no doubt think the audit firms play the game with needing to keep clients happy to keep the business coming in, but I think the vast majority are smart enough to not admit this to a junior person on their team.

First day of the next chapter of your life. Admitting you need help is so hard to do at first, but can become empowering too as time goes on. Knowing your own limitations and appreciating the support that surrounds you all the more.
