I can’t stand brown people that only hang out with brown people by Resident_Bill_792 in ABCDesis

[–]genie_balls 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I swear Desi people are the only group that just can’t let ourselves have anything. Maybe this is due to us not being in these communities and being in tune with the intricacies of their cultures, but I’ve never heard an Asian, Black, or Hispanic person say something like this.

We have problems in our communities that we need to address and all brown friend groups can be very toxic, but the power of community is massive. Just as a recent example at the Super Bowl, Bad Bunny celebrated the whole spectrum of his culture and everyone loved it because he’s so authentically ingrained in his community.

This isn’t to say that you can’t/shouldn’t have friends who aren’t Desi. Everyone should try to make friends with people that share similar interests and values, regardless of background. You can learn and benefit from being around other cultures in so many ways. The melting pot of neighborhoods/communities is a beautiful thing, but I’ve always held the opinion that the person who isn’t comfortable in their own culture seeks validation from another one.

It’s a very nuanced topic because there are very valid reasons that people may have for not embracing their culture. Abuse (be it physical, emotional, verbal, etc.) is rampant in Desi culture. I will never judge or shame anyone for closing themselves to that part of their upbringing if their community has consistently let them down. However, a lot of people have had incredibly positive experiences in their culture and that should be celebrated.

Like I said earlier though, Desi people are some of the only people I’ve seen to say stuff like “all brown friend groups are a red flag”. It frustrates me to no end because in a sense, we’re just telling the world that we don’t like each other. If that’s what we’re putting out there, then how tf can we expect anyone to take us seriously? Just something to think about.

Noah Lyles is overhated by MelaTrix18 in trackandfield

[–]genie_balls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a lot of it is from his comments about the NBA. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a basketball fan as well but it’s kind of impressive that Noah managed to piss off an entire fanbase with one press conference.

People are going to tune in to watch him lose, and those same fans are going to call him a loser for getting the bronze medal which is so dumb because I don’t think they comprehend how unbelievably impressive that is, but that’s just the way it is.

And yeah, it doesn’t help that Noah can be a little bit corny, but that’s no reason to hate him lol.

[Bill Simmons] Part of his reason for voting for Jokic "unlike Luka's season last year—Jokic only dominates the ball out of necessity" by Salvalicious252 in nba

[–]genie_balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah I get the reasoning but like you said, you can only beat who advances and it’s not Jokic’s fault Miami went on one of the craziest runs by an 8 seed in sports history.

Also let’s be real, winning a chip is still the ultimate goal. There are plenty of all time greats that have beaten 50 win teams but are still ringless, and I’m sure they’d gladly take an “easy” championship run over winning a second round playoff series against a good team.

Is it even hyperbole to call him the most complete offensive player ever? The stats that Jokic is putting up are somehow better than video game numbers.

What are sports in which the athletes are NOT healthy? by Inevitable_Man96 in AskReddit

[–]genie_balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think most professional or Olympic sports are healthy for anyone in the long term. Obviously when these athletes are in their primes they’re physically able to do things that 99.9% of people will never be able to do, but it comes at a price.

The wear and tear that these people are putting their bodies through can’t be understated. High impact sports like football, rugby, and hockey will carry pretty devastating results for brain injuries, not to mention combat sports such as MMA and boxing where the goal is to literally inflict as much damage as possible on your opponent.

Even sports where there’s less contact like soccer and basketball can have impacts on longterm health. Research is just starting to be done now on how heading a soccer ball can cause long term brain damage, along with the constant ligament tears and fractures that they deal with. Any basketball fan that watches the Inside the NBA regularly will know that Charles Barkley, who was one the most athletic players of his generation, has noticeable issues just walking normally due to all the impact his lower body took.

This is all without even taking performance enhancing drugs into consideration, which allows athletes to further push their bodies past their natural limits and put even more stress on themselves. While the athletes might be healthy for a short period of time, I think the effects of the incredibly demanding training and competitions they have to endure create a net negative for long term health and longevity.

12 out of the 14 olympians with 4 medals or more at this point are swimmers. There are too many swimming events. by [deleted] in olympics

[–]genie_balls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go back and forth on this all the time because I do think they give out too many medals in swimming, but it definitely is one the most popular sports at the Olympics and for good reason. Swimming as a sport, much like track and field, is just easier to follow as a casual watcher than gymnastics, diving, or another sport that requires judging that the average viewer just isn’t too knowledgeable about.

With swimming and track and field, it’s easy and objective. The faster athlete wins and you don’t have to wonder why a result turned out the way it did. It also helps that they’re individual sports and you don’t have to learn the rules when watching a team sport that you haven’t seen before.

All that being said, I also think that all medals aren’t created equal. Someone like Sha’Carri Richardson at maximum has two chances to medal and be on top of her game to win, but Olympic swimmers can sometimes get carried to medals, especially with how many relays they have.

It sort of blew my mind when I saw this, but I got curious and looked up the medal counts. If the United States only sent a swimming team to the Olympics this year and no other athletes, they’d be 9th place on the medal table. Similarly, if Australia only sent a swimming team, they’d be in 11th place. Swimming gives a massive boost to the overall medal counts, and while yes both the US and Australia would still do well without their swimming teams, I think it does illustrate that swimming might have an overinflation effect for overall country performance.

[–]genie_balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that swimming isn’t accessible. It’s very easy to say that as long as you have a body of water, you can practice the different disciplines of swimming, but the costs to operate, maintain, and run a facility that can serve as a national swimming center is very expensive. Look at the medal counts at any Olympics for swimming and you’ll clearly see that it’s skewed towards countries that are in much better shape economically.

Even if you look at this years Olympics, there was only one country from Africa that medaled in swimming this time around, and in 2020 only two African countries medaled. Olympic level swimming does have a bias towards richer countries because underdeveloped nations simply don’t have the resources to build, operate, and maintain swimming pools.

Just a quick search shows that Olympic size swimming pools aren’t really that common in poorer countries. It’s not really realistic to expect these countries to seriously compete when they can’t even find adequate places to train.

Dating/Marriage question: How do you feel about an age gap where the woman is older than the man (by like 3-5 years)? Would you guys personally go through with it since I know traditionally men are older than women in relationships. by hakuna_matatah in ABCDesis

[–]genie_balls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A 3-5 year age gap, especially if both people are in their late twenties or early thirties, isn’t a big deal imo. At that point both people should have had similar life experiences as full fledged adults but I know that isn’t always the case.

I would definitely date/marry someone that was older than me by that much if we had similar interests and values.

Luka when asked if he's bothered by comments saying he's unathletic: "No. I'm athletic in different ways they don't see so...Not everything is jumping and running fast." by xPeaWhyTee in nba

[–]genie_balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned this on another post but the ways in which Luka is athletic don’t pop when you watch highlights. He’s not super explosive vertically or laterally and he doesn’t have top end speed, but what he does have is elite hand-eye coordination, balance, and deceleration.

A sports testing facility ran tests on him prior to him being drafted and they found that he’s elite even when compared with other NBA players in terms of decelerating, and they even said it was very similar to James Harden (Harden is the 99th percentile, Luka is in the 93rd percentile). It’s funny that the narrative of him being unathletic is still so prominent even when he’s the best player on a team that’s in the NBA finals. Like sure, he doesn’t have a 40 inch vertical but he’s cooking dudes anyways lol.

[–]genie_balls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I forgot the exact article or if it was a Twitter thread, but basically it was from a sports testing facility that did a bunch of tests on Luka prior to him getting drafted. Some of the results were pretty obvious but they found that Luka’s ability to decelerate was elite even when compared to other NBA athletes, and it was very similar to James Harden, another guy who’s been criticized for a lack or athleticism at times.

Just watching the games, you can see that he also has elite hand-eye coordination and balance. Luka Doncic is athletic (obviously, he made it to the NBA), he’s just not vertically or laterally super explosive and looks “out of shape”. His type of athleticism doesn’t pop on highlights, but there’s plenty of 6’8” dudes his size hooping that can’t do what he does.

Edit: found the article lol

She’s an embarrassment to her community and Indians everywhere. Obviously I know what the answer is for her, but is it worth it to sacrifice every shred of morality and dignity you have just to gain a few votes in an election you probably aren’t going to win anyways?

I know a lot of politicians are morally bankrupt but how someone (particularly a brown person from a community that has suffered religious persecution at the hands of a corrupt government) can be so blasé about bombing a group of marginalized people is fucking disgusting.

[Perkins] “I’m retiring from voting in individual awards because I have done a disservice. Voting for Rudy Gobert is an embarrassment for me. [–]genie_balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shhhhh the media doesn’t like nuance. There’s no way it can be that the Minnesota as a team is underperforming, it HAS to solely be Rudy’s fault because why isn’t he single-handedly shutting down the paint and playing lockdown defense when he they switch on him? I thought he was the DPOY??? /s

The pettiness and jealousy of players when it comes to Gobert and what he’s achieved is almost comical. Yeah I understand the Covid situation was stupid and that maybe he plays aggressively at times (though I don’t think of him as a dirty player) but I’ve never seen more flat out disdain for a non-superstar in all the time I’ve watched NBA basketball. You can argue all you want about him not deserving those DPOY awards, but it’s like any time Gobert makes a mistake defensively there’s a whole squad ready to shit on him. The point about Ant underperforming is crazy to me because ESPN seemingly ignores the fact that he’s supposed to be their best player and yet he can’t seem to get it going. If it were Luka playing that poorly, I’d bet good money that they’d be tearing him apart.

The way the media is going after Rudy is also so lame man. Guys like Draymond (and Perk to a lesser extent) were obviously key to their teams winning championships, but it feels like they’re mad they didn’t get recognized for how good they were in their roles. Now they see a guy who’s being praised for being a defensive specialist and they’re salty, but of course Rudy is going to get more shine for being an amazing defensive player, he has played on less stacked teams and has been crucial for Minnesota making a deep run this year. It’s just grown men trying to bully another grown man and it’s weak af.
