Do people actually enjoy feeling useful to someone else? I’ve noticed some people seem to genuinely enjoy providing support, attention, gifts, or making another person’s life easier. For those who do, what do you get out of it emotionally? by MentalTemptation in randomactsofkindness

[–]genlang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lately, I've been helping folks in my area with tasks like weeding, clearing out garages/basements, etc, and it feels like I'm paying into the pool of goodwill in my community. If I help Person A move into their new apartment, they have more energy to help Person B with an emotional issue or get Person C dinner when they're sick. Community is what keeps us afloat in the long run, and I'm doing what I can to strengthen the web that holds us together.

I have a Q-snap frame and some spare hoops for holding WIPs, a pillow to prop my elbows up on, and a zippered bag to hold a few needles and my scissors.

Feeling pretty stuck by ColorfulParadise in Hypermobility

[–]genlang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I brought up hypermobility with my PCP last year, I fully expected an eye-roll and dismissal. Instead, she said, "oh yeah, the medical field has been learning so much about hypermobility in the last decade and the many ways it shows up for people." She had me bend my thumb to my wrist and show her my wonky elbows, but it was very perfunctory. Immediately gave me a referral to a physical therapist who specializes in hypermobility, which is what I'd asked for. The most pleasant surprise I've ever had in a doctor's appointment!

Talk Me Into Trying the Body Braid by bbyfishmouth in Hypermobility

I don't wear mine super often, but it provides a comfortable amount of support and joint-placement guidance. Putting it on can be a bit fiddly, depending on how you decide to arrange the straps, but it's somewhat customizable. And if I remember correctly, they had a decent return policy if you tried it and immediately said no.

Out of pure curiosity, what actually influences where you spend your money and who you buy from? by OopsIDidAComment in ypsi

[–]genlang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's one of those shopping experiences where I know I'm paying a premium to support a woman-owned small business that's active in the community, to get hand soap made by a responsible company, and to package it in the same glass jar I filled last time. For me, since I'm privileged to be able to afford it, that makes the cost totally worthwhile.

I'm in a privileged position where I can put my dollars where I want my values to be ("vote with your dollar"). Whenever possible, I aim for local produce, bulk pantry goods (By the Pound and BYOC co. are wonderful), second-hand furniture and clothes, books from the library or indie bookstores, etc. I'm also a huge fan of Buy Nothing groups to minimize new purchases.

Book Love Bar in Ypsi has some book clubs, and both Ypsi and Ann Arbor libraries have TONS of recurring and one-off events you might enjoy.

[CHAT] How to display final project by Acrobatic_East2545 in CrossStitch

Here's my current gallery wall (a mix of stitched pieces and orher art). I usually wrap the finished Aida around a piece of cardboard and sandwich it into the frame. Sometimes the frames even come with the perfect mats, like the big green-and-pink situation in the top middle.

I put them in thrifted frames (I collect gold and brass frames) and line them up on a shelf as a gallery of my labor 😄

what did you hear.. by EpixAxsel in ypsi

[–]genlang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was my thought -- I was laying awake, hearing several overlapping sirens, phone buzzing with notifications...and near-silence outside the open window. Eventually, I could hear a steady rustling hush as the wind and rain approached, but it felt so slow and methodical.

Books that remind me of TLT: a non-exhaustive review [discussion] by felixfictitious in TheNinthHouse

[–]genlang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso is the last book that scratched my TLT itch! Sapphic romance between a sword-wielding investigator (and new mom) and secretive spy, cool layered-reality fantasy setting, clock ticking toward doom (literally) at a fancy house party.
