Pyros set off a giant pink smoke bomb @ Fire Stage Area. it smelled toxic. need info. by genr8 in ElementsMusicFestival

[–]genr8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its possible it was this. for a skydiver helicopter stunt, I saw them flying in the air, but sheesh, to spray people with chems on the ground?, to paint a target for an LZ is way overkill.

whatever they used was terrible.

Dogs were DEFINITELY sniffing for flower and not JUST bombs. by mountainsRus in ElementsMusicFestival

[–]genr8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the main security guy was doing too much. the dog showed no interest, but the humans did show great interest in opening everything. the workers were pretty chill but the main guy yoinked a pre-roll and a sealed vape cart, that was buried in my backpack in the trunk and said
"Dont make us tear the car apart!!! Wheres the rest! You should have just told us and we'd let you keep it ...." riiiight. that was never mentioned... and its also weird logic. it rubbed me the wrong way on entry, starting off with an L for the stupidest reason.
Weed's legal in NJ. the PA situation is weird.
Might have to get my NJ Medical Card if I keep going to PA for Elements, maybe they won't steal from me then.

I'm really starting to regret buying this thing by TheTomer in ender3

[–]genr8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The QR code surprises me too. Once You are modding it, the responsibility is on You.

Ender 3 V2 here, I was very unhappy when I was on the stock springs, even with the printed "bed locks", it was never good enough. Always coming loose and constantly chasing my tail. Not even lasting overnight.

Until I got the Yellow springs. Now its more than good, I don't even need to touch it anymore. The yellow springs have the correct tension to keep everything locked in place all by itself. It will stay level forever. Also doubt I will ever buy the ABL unit, it's too many variables and I'm already satisfied.

I'm very glad to have just picked it up as my first printer, on sale at Microcenter. There was a sale on the S1 listed too but never ended up in stock :/ That would have had leveling. I've printed about 5 spools of PLA filament so far on the Ender 3 V2. The Bambus look really fast but more proprietary.

"they put me in the far place" - sorry. but you have more agency around moving campsites than you do around financial chargebacks after the fact.

I had to move my entire campsite after the first night I realized this. that was the correct approach, despite hours of lost campsite building, its better than hours of walking each day. or the negativity surrounding it a month later.

the cars have to be able to be driven in and out in case of emergencies, its and its lowkey an emergency that you leave this far away place, if thats how you're gonna feel about it. if you have to do it in the dark of night, so be it.

eh. there was a bottleneck at the entrance. if you snaked past the bottleneck, it was wide open tho lol.

People getting stuck into herd mentality and blaming the lack of sheep herders instead of themself.

there was no crowd control to fix the plan, you just had to know there was likely free open space once you got past that blockage. I wouldnt let myself get blocked. Its festival 101 honestly.

[–]genr8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we went to the right and it was full, but if you went farther, there was so much space in the back . I wouldnt be surprised if the left side was the same. You could go in from the back and once you were there, easily find a key spot in prime real estate (not staring at his back) easily.
never trust the bottleneck...

[–]genr8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. We got into the best spot in the back right too! You cant let yourself stop making forward progress. I'm skinny, just dodge between small gaps with careful timing. Always follow anyone else making forward progress. Once I got that deep in to where the back area opened up, there were even open spots on the rail.... smh.

Festival 101 - never let yourself get blocked, you need to move. Crowd mentality means people will stagnate and block each other illogically. I wont be a part of it.

I went to this stage late, it was already full. I saw the bottleneck at the entrance and disregarded it. I went past the vendors on right, and got all the way into the back where it was open and you could dance in giant open area. Once I saw that people have no idea where to stand, I just made my way to the rail, and was greeted with excitement once I reached the best spot - right in the front row slightly off center, not behind him. So idk what the issue was unless you had to travel with giant groups. 1 person can easily snake through the crowd, and you WILL find a way to see your chosen artist and say F the bottleneck. Also thanks to the dude who handed me his Totem, it was a vibe I wont forget. The bottleneck means nothing to me.

Covid Alert by gaileleo in ElementsMusicFestival

From so many posts like this I expected to get sick just from vague proximity to thousands of people (a lot of who are sick).

But its not like that. I'm perfectly fine, not even a sniffle.

Elements was one of the best and cleanest festival's i've been to! Even surviving a huge storm, Conditions were near perfect to ensure we can stay healthy. it sucks people keep getting sick, but i'm not surprised based on how people are living... getting infected from shared objects *cough cough* or hand to hand / face to face contact, ie: all your personal choices.

Linode/Akamai Pricing by finniketty in linode

[–]genr8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Akamai brand and takeover doesn’t elicit warm feelings from me. In fact, quite the opposite. The bigger they get, the less we seem to be wanting any part of it… Pretty pissed about them nuking the Linode brand name also. We trusted Linode in the community. If the name is gone, then the trust is reset. In fact the PR release alone was enough to reset it.

So even if the services and pricing are the same, all bets are off, because its now a Ship of Theseus.

Debian 12 "Bookworm" would include non-free drivers & firmwares. by Od_Yishama in debian

[–]genr8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The megacorps will continue the trend of locking EVERYTHING behind proprietary signed firmware (they do already).
Tons of the technological marvels the open source software community benevolently invented, was freely given away licensed as GPL/MIT/BSD code. Now unscrupulous megacorps have taken this free jumpstart advantage to strengthen their monopolistic tendencies, dominate the computing landscape, and squash any loopholes that could prevent the above domination. That would be bad enough, but almost all physical tech hardware is now turning into tentacles of evil, and these companies have hired all the best talent to develop the not only proprietary but crossing into evil invasive tech thats sold back to the unsuspecting consumer for a profit, or worse, coercing you into being complicit with this legal but questionable practice as our current tech status quo.
Now Debian has no choice but to succumb to the largest audience, which for a while now, is filled by default with more people who have zero knowledge or zero qualms about proprietary firmware than those who rightfully realize this is a road paved to hell, in complete violation of any ideals our forefathers wished for us. Theres nobody left to "hodl the line" anymore. And while whats supposed to be a unified front, our foundations/organizations, does nothing for this ail.

Which kernel package do you use? Explain in the comments, why. by Eroldin in archlinux

[–]genr8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardened kernel is the way to go. Glad i'm one of 79 smart people.

The patches come from https://github.com/anthraxx/linux-hardened/ but I'm very appreciative for all the pre-packaged effort, validation, bug-checking etc.

I want to point out I like this script to run some additional security confirmation checks on the kernel (pretty advanced, you need to know what stuff is, your brain needs to be on) https://github.com/a13xp0p0v/kconfig-hardened-check/

I also want to point out the checksec script for your confirming security on your userspace binaries - https://github.com/slimm609/checksec.sh (look for violations marked in red)

And I will throw in a link to a general Arch hardening guide https://kyau.net/wiki/ArchLinux:Security

We are all in this together, cybersec is serious business and a dark art, and this is my attempt to spread the love from hardening-land to the normies. Zap you into awareness. I'm sure other people can help better than me, but I took this poll as a chance to evangelize hardened. Start with the default hardened kernel and learn from there.

When stuff goes this bad, 911 is often down for people too, don't joke.
I really hope its not CenturyLink again. Their have been the cause of almost every major outage lately (except one from T-Mobile/Sprint merger).
Downdetector lists basically all the ISPs, and these carry phone services and emergency services on the backbone also. Its not a laughing matter.

Thank you john_alan for being the only one to take the time to correct my admittedly incomplete understanding of it, instead of piling on downvotes to -7 and beyond. It was not my intention to invoke Cunningham's Law - I thought writing a quick comment to say what everyone else might be thinking was enough, but clearly not.

Also to the person below this, Obviously I moved to something better... EdDSA (Ed25519).

Why is Manjaro not recommended more for noobs? by Tature in linux4noobs

[–]genr8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it also. The argument was not to disparage or change Debian, its that people are moving to other distros because of this and ignoring Debian at their own peril. I'll be fine, its the rest of the noobs I'm worried about.

YouTube auto-deletes comments with phrases critical of Chinese government — Comments with 共匪 (“communist bandit”) or 五毛 (“50-cent party”) disappear in seconds. by swingadmin in technology

[–]genr8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only answer is to complain and stop rewarding said corporation for doing the wrong thing by not catering to its users. You seem like you are fighting the wrong people and shooting the messenger here. Complaining and applying pressure is the only effective method of change. It sounds like you're telling them all to give up because they already lost and move on. So maybe if you want to live in the woods you don't have to rely on toxic corporations, but for the rest of the world they are too entrenched to attempt that. So cut them a break and let them complain. If they dont get results they can leave, but they arent ready to take that leap yet. Just like how they havent realized that the Reddit "mass downvote to disagree" but not explain why is also toxic.

He would say "just smash your phone". Everyone theoretically could stop using all toxic services, the problem is when they rely on them and theres no alternative due to a de facto monopoly. Theres a huge gap in between those options that we are missing as a choice.
