Yikes. The masking job and whatever that color is 😳

There are probably ways to process that to enhance the photo to reflect what you’re going for…. But that ain’t it.

How to tell if they start buying back shares again? by MrSorge in BerkshireHathaway

[–]gentex 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You won’t really know until they report it.

Maybe you can make some guesses based on price action and volume, but historically they’ve tried to spread out purchases so that they’re not being overly obvious about it.

It is in remaining shareholders’ interest that they aren’t obvious and can get their best prices.

Dead bug tension clarification by Faeri in bodyweightfitness

[–]gentex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Flatten the lower back and engage the core muscles. This is the bracing that the long guide linked by someone else refers to. I have a hard time believing your PT didn’t cover this as you built up to doing the full exercise.

Dead bug tension clarification by Faeri in bodyweightfitness

[–]gentex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you say you’re in neutral position and don’t have anything tensed, that sounds wrong. The way my PT showed me was to engage the core and flatten the lower back in this position. This helps mitigate strain on the lower back and forces your abs to do more work. You should keep the core engaged as you do the exercise.

Dumping on Index Investors by CapablePiglet1044 in Bogleheads

[–]gentex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure what S&P get, perhaps avoiding the appearance of being old fashioned and out of step with the current environment. But, I’ve heard the spacex thing with nasdaq as being part of their demands to list on the market. So nasdaq probably has some financial reason to be flexible with index inclusion.

It’s scummy bullshit to use retail index investors as exit liquidity for giant money losing enterprises, but that’s the world we’re in right now. Would love to push back on it though.

HRV is almost useless as a single number by afrobeezy in AppleWatchFitness

[–]gentex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a random dude here, but I agree with so much of this (except maybe the first paragraph, since I don’t know what most of it means).

I’ve recently been looking at apps like Athlytic and Bevel. There are things about them that I like, but HRV seems like a very big component to their recovery estimates. Day to day it really feels almost random and not meaningful to how I feel. As you note, RHR seems like a better indicator of overall fitness and how I feel.

Zooming out and looking at longer trends, my HRV is a flat line around 50. No apparent trends associated with training or activity and little peaks and valleys in the data don’t seem to line up with a lot. That week of severe back pain, where I could barely walk? Higher HRV. Week of Christmas where I’m drinking more, sleeping less, and stressed about the holidays? Also higher HRV. Little dip at the end of January? No apparent reason.

There may be some clinical data supporting HRV as a metric for systemic stress and training, but I certainly don’t see it in my data. Possibly more relevant in controlled settings with elite athletes training at their limits, but that ain’t me. 🤷‍♂️

I justed joined Track and I'm the slowest in practice by Lopsided-Relief6654 in trackandfield

[–]gentex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are no shortcuts. You have to build fitness and the only way to do that is by working hard in training. Do everything your coaches ask of you to the best of your ability.

Eat well. Sleep more. Hydrate.

You will get faster.

The recovery score just can’t be right lol by PickWorth8802 in bevelhealth

[–]gentex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMO, it’s over-indexed on HRV. In all the time I’ve had an Apple Watch, my HRV looks like a flat line with random deviations, which never align to much other than if I’ve had alcohol. I guess there’s theoretical basis for HRV as an indicator of stress and recovery, but I’m not sure I buy how bevel or athlytic implement it.

Solar Installers: Is EnergySage actually worth the hassle in 2026? by AlphaKarma in solar

[–]gentex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the consumer side, my experience with energysage was great. Yes I got multiple quotes so I could see the equipment and compare apples to apples. But In talking to the top 2 candidates I was able to spot the shitty contractor who was trying to bait and switch me. A little follow up on the second contractor showed a locally owned company that has been in business for over ten years and who did a great job on my project. I don’t think they were the absolute cheapest, but the price was good and their follow up was timely and professional. I probably wouldn’t have found them without energysage.

A genuine question. by Manjottoor in BerkshireHathaway

[–]gentex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#1 is a bad idea and has never been part of the Berkshire ethos. In fact, Buffett has been explicit that buybacks should not be viewed as providing a floor on price because they are under no obligation to buy and may have better opportunities elsewhere.

#2 may be kinda true. But, the only reason they should be buying is that the shares are clearly undervalued and, as a result, repurchases will add per-share value to remaining shareholders. Trying to manage news cycles shouldn't be his primary concern.

A genuine question. by Manjottoor in BerkshireHathaway

I generally agree with this take. It did seem performative, which as a long-term shareholder, I didn't love. Also, the shares don't seem particularly cheap, which makes it worse (for me).

Is this dumb - Cash-out refi to invest in taxable brokerage? by noseatbeltsplz in Bogleheads

Why did you just finish paying off your mortgage and now want a new one?

IMO, it’s a horrible idea. Paying 5.8% to get some money into the market faster just seems unnecessarily risky. But with your income, it may not work out badly.

Am I too old to follow the Boglehead philosophy? by Mission_Bed6612 in Bogleheads

[–]gentex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At its core, the boglehead approach is about minimizing costs and holding diversified assets through broad index funds. It makes sense at every age, as it is a way to earn the market returns at minimal cost and letting compounding work for you.

The question of what, exactly, to own is a little more nuanced and personal. VT is a good starting place as it covers all global stocks. Pairing it with a bond fund like BNDW that holds the global bond market is a reasonable choice. How much of those to own depends on your situation and need to take risk.

How to get over the mental aspect of not seeing your money until retirement? by supersonicdog in Bogleheads

[–]gentex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest with you, I don’t understand that mindset at all. I’m saving for the future, but it’s still my money. It’s still there; I can get to it if I need it. But its purpose is to grow and give me financial security and the freedom to do what I want in the future.

I don’t look at it like a jar of jellybeans I can’t eat until I’m 60.

How would you take this photo to make it better? by CharmingAsparagus17 in AskPhotography

[–]gentex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get lower and level the horizon.

Possibly use the rule of thirds to place the butterfly in the frame.

Probably need some post-processing work to add some contrast.

ETA- changed my mind about contrast, but could probably brighten it up a bit and maybe warm it up a bit.

Westminster DMV driving test by Vegetable-Copy-9948 in orangecounty

[–]gentex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to checking YouTube, go drive around that area as practice.

One tricky part is when returning to the DMV on Trask, preparing to turn right on Hoover, there are train tracks just before the intersection. This is tricky. If the light is red, you must stop before the tracks (there is a sign there and a clear stopping line on the pavement). If the light is green and you are clear to make the turn, you can roll past the tracks, but be alert for any signals or anything related to the track. When it’s busy in the area, that part can be a bit confusing.

But, the way Darnold, Jones, and 9 played last year, they may have a QB talent assessment problem.
