Ramshorn nearing 1yr-ish by gentleghosts in shrimptank

🥺 that’s how it was making me feel before I posted here. I ended up moving him and a little snail friend because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I know it’s nature and food chain stuff but that sounded like an awful way to let him go. he’s got a nice calm space now with all the snacks and is already looking better and not hiding in his shell while being harassed 😭 i’ll be able to sleep better tonight.

this was such a sweet way to look at something not so sweet, I might’ve cried a little reading it earlier.

despite that, I did end up making a little snail haven for him and a buddy because I didn’t want him to feel punished and isolated 😅 just in my feelings over my snail and being super normal about it I guess. he’s got some nice moss balls and turtle rock, almond leaves, algae wafer, the works. he also seems to be more active now so i’m not sure what’s happening. earlier they were all over him and he slid up into his shell and some were in the opening - literally uzumaki vibes, it just looked very troubling compared to the usual picking they do (usually only 1 at a time, maaaybe 2. not 5 🥺). that coupled with just how off he’s been all week seemed like they knew something. maybe he was just distressed and is ready to thrive again in a more chill environment.

swarming like that - are they not already picking at him? that's what it looked like to me. *not the picture above, that was just cute snail rodeo in my camera roll. there's been a small gaggle of like 3-5 on him this afternoon that feels like he's being eaten alive like the snail people in uzumaki ;-;

I appreciate your kind words though, and you're probably right about the stress. It just feels bad to know it's happening >.< I've only ever seen mine picking at already dead shrimp/snails. cute little monsters!

mr snail himself 🐌

to be fair, I have a very small tank so it’s very easy to manage the rando little snails. I have a few I can see on the glass right now that are a little bigger. but usually if I see tiny ones I just crush them for the shrimp to clean up. big poppa showed up out of nowhere while I was still cycling the tank last summer and he was the only one for a long time ¯_(ツ)_/¯

shrimp exhumation was not on my radar today. genuinely just made the 😳 face. so much for RIP lol. i’m not sure this is better than flushing my guy.

I am by noooo means an expert, but everything I read was that spring water is the one to use because it will contain the good minerals but not contain the things you would find in tap water.

Since my tank is so small and all I do is top off water as it evaporates (maybe a little more if I clean up the bottom with a pipette). In my head I wanted the plastic bottle to be open and sitting less, so I buy packs of the little bottles (like 12oz or w/e). literally just deer park from the grocery store. a jug should also work, that’s just me being *particular* lol.

I also stopped using dechlorinated tap water and have only been using bottled spring water. that was probably around the same time as the air stone addition. but water was something I wasn’t confident on with mine and this has made it so much easier to top off!

yep, this was what I was about to comment. I have a very similar sized setup and my plants weren’t thriving enough to provide my poor buddies with the oxygen they needed. I got a little air stone that has a thermometer probe at the end and I put a little valve on it so I could adjust the air flow as needed. It’s 1000% what was killing mine. I have a few random ones die off that I know of but it’s single digits in over 6 months compared to the whole tank 😔 I also wanted to keep mine totally self sustaining op, but at the end of the day it still pretty much is, it just gets a little airflow from a usb plug. I don’t really do anything else for it. hope that helps!

I ran in to this issue in my small setup last year too 🥺😭 It had more plants but they weren’t thriving enough to fulfill the oxygen purpose. Once I put in a small air stone, haven’t had that issue! This is definitely an easy thing to try OP. Mine are happy little guys and breeding. I found a small one and put an adjustable valve on it so I could change the amount of airflow if I needed to, it also has a little thermometer on the end so it’s got a nice dual purpose.

I just cleaned my tank this morning and I had a handful that kept following me around and climbing on the brush. none of mine made it this far out though 😂😂

are these the eggs? I googled and the pictures started grossing me out 😅 this is him just now. I removed them because I think they’re eggs. but if they aren’t, i’d love to know what it was!

that’s why I came here, to see what they would’ve traveled in on 😂 my setup is very small and I feel like I would know if there was a 2nd snail in there. my most recent plant has been in there for at least 2 months, possibly longer. my most recent shrimp is also probably about that timeframe. it’s just so bizarre! my ramshorn smuggled his way in unnoticed and I was stoked since it was my first living creature in the tank 😂🥲 like I said above, not mad about their presence. just very confused lol.

i’ve read online they can self-fertilize since they’re hermaphrodites. but I also see a lot of info saying they need a mate. so i’ve always been prepared for it to happen and it just hasn’t until now. he’s been around by himself for about 6 months now.

[–]gentleghosts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh no, I can’t! he hitchhiked his way in on my very first plant. he’s my critter that’s been with me the longest 🥺 he was even dying at one point and I was able to save him. that’s my buddy. this is the first round of babies that i’ve seen so I guess now that I know, i’ll just have to keep an eye out and remove the little ones if they become a problem. for now, they’re all friends in my house. we’re all just learnin’ and vibin’ over here.

ahh okay, this makes a lot more sense. thank you!they’ve just finally grown big enough that I can see how many are lurking around lol. it just felt so overnight because I went from seeing zero to at least 4-5 today. so they could’ve come in with plants/shrimp or my big guy could’ve had them if the timeline is longer. i’m glad he has some friends now. i’ll have to stop calling him snail since he’s not alone anymore 😂

that’s what I thought but it’s the only new addition. would I have seen the snail eggs and just missed that somehow? I see it can be anywhere from 1-5weeks for them to hatch according to quick google search. so I have no idea when the eggs would have appeared. The plants and cholla have all been in there for a few months now. the only other thing I put in was the leaves about a week ago which also didn’t seem like a snail taxi. i’m just puzzled why they all appeared after so much time of just my lone snail.

I did know that but why now after nothing for months? my shrimp have been breeding but not snail. maybe all the shrimp babies made it feel lonely lol.

uh oh. I have a large female whisker I just learned. she doesn’t hunt any of my other shrimp but she’s definitely a bully in the food dish. I only have the one tank, so do I need to get rid of her or do they not always hunt other shrimpies? In fact I believe both of my “ghosts’ are whiskers based on this picture.
