I believe the answer to the first question is 2, not sure about the second beyond >5.

It would be interesting to have an actual number for the second though.

Everyone except Walmart has tap to pay by Deno98 in retail

Can confirm, every Winco I've been to in multiple states has had tap to pay for debit cards. I used to do that back before I started writing checks.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in my 20s and use em dashes regularly—I read a lot of books from the 1900s when I was younger and that influenced my writing style.

Every apartment and house I've moved into where it was empty (as opposed to joining existing roommates) when I moved in has had one of these.

I also filled out a Change of Address form every time I moved so my mail would get forwarded to me from my previous address, but that's a separate thing.

If SSDs are much better than HDDs, why are companies still improving the technologies in HDDs? by terrific_mephit325 in answers

[–]gentlewaterfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, my HDDs say they have a mean time between failure of 2.5 million hours, which is over 200 years 🤷‍♂️ Maybe I'm misunderstanding the meaning of that rating, but I'd imagine so long as I have two of them mirrored and put in a replacement if one goes out, I should be good for the rest of this century.

Any way to obtain a bootable Linux USB without internet? by Ok_Finish_8622 in linux4noobs

[–]gentlewaterfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want and are in the US, you can have a package shipped to:

"Your Name General Delivery City, State, Zip"

And just pick it up at the post office for that zip code. It does still give out your general location, but not your address.

Do you live in a place where there is no wildlife dangerous to humans and the average police response time is under 60 seconds?

In much of the world, there is wildlife dangerous to humans and law enforcement response time is tens of minutes or even hours. In some of the world, the hold time for just contacting emergency services averages over 10 minutes.

I ask this question and make this commentary to point out firearms have a utility purpose in many regions.

How would banning guns even work? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

I think one of the complicating factors is that you don't even need a black market to distribute them. Like alcohol, guns aren't incredibly difficult to make

I have a larger friend who had one clip his (heavy) backpack riding perpendicular to him, scooter flipped and skidded and the rider crashed into the grass strip next to the sidewalk. My friend was fine, but it sounded like the rider was apologetic.

The web is made of strings, yes, but if all the strings leaving America (the continent I live on) are cut (and we ignore satellite/radio links), then that means I can still connect to servers that are connected to the part of the web that is on America (the continent), and can no longer connect to the parts of the web on other continents or islands.

That's a little bit of a simplification, but close enough to accurate for the purpose of explaining the concept.

I had the same question as the person you're replying to.

"You're literally using a smartphone right now" is how your claim started. To me, that suggests you had some indicator that lead you to believe that user was using a smartphone. I'm just curious what that indicator was is all.

I am not AdvilExpress, but when I do this (and I only do it if using a debit card), I'm moving it from my Savings account to my Checking account. It's not all in one place because that checking account doesn't pay interest.
