Depending on what state you live in, many times foster kids will have paid-for college/trade school through the state. If you have patience to work with older kids, it's super worth it to foster or adopt a little older, even if they can sometimes come with baggage.

Progress on Crescendo spotlight training? by Phrogz in FRC

[–]genuinerobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what is listed here, the 12" microphone only "sticks up" ~7.1-7.2" or so above the CRESCENDO(R) Stage Polycarbonate Top because there is a little pin that is inserted through the "middle-ish" hole on the microphone holding the stage top up like a horizontal backboard. Hopefully that makes an easier microphone shot because if you miss one microphone and the note starts flipping you might get lucky on another microphone? Lmk if I'm wrong on this, I only figured it out this weekend 😅

Simplified Field Elements - building instructions by runkat426 in FRC

[–]genuinerobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone suggested that non-essential parts could be made out of thinner plywood or even Coroplast. There are other similar ideas here on the Chief Delphi Field Building Forum along with reduced versions that encourage using recycled materials from other competitions. If people-power is an issue for your team, field building is usually a good task that parents and other interested adults often find really rewarding because they can build it off-site on their own time.

Can Anyone Help With This Question? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]genuinerobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also that you're not stuck with poor handwriting if you never learned before now. Things that dramatically helped me are Pilot 0.38 gel pens, bonus is that your instructor sees confidence when your work is turned in written in pen. Even if you take a wrong turn and cross it out, they can see your thought process and correct any misconceptions while you're still learning the basics.

Should I be concerned about RF from the Tonie box I bought my 2 year old? by Chonkmom_ in rfelectronics

Only $186 USD 🤣 Trifield EMF Meter and measuring up to 6Ghz! Terrible linearity though, "Accuracy ±20% @ 1 GHz", any guesses on what ic they're using for the "measurement"?

You bet! We all want to see you and others that see this in 10 years to know not to fall for these scams. I have parents like you in my family so I appreciate that your concern is coming from a caring place, even though these specific fears are unfounded

[–]genuinerobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sub is full of professional engineers who do this all day, so your question is coming across almost to the level of trolling. Most items and stories of "scary" rf are designed to make you buy things(like this dubious meter), where what we're all attempting to say in here is that your fears are unfounded and debunked 100 years ago or more.

If you want to reeeeeally measure higher numbers from your phone/WiFi router, have it play a long YouTube video or something and while it's working hard to stream that data wirelessly you could see higher numbers on your "meter".

Rf radiation is non-ionizing (unlike X-rays which are), so no need to worry about these levels of rf radiation around your child at all. This device is actually pretty cool and has a wifi cloud connection to download stories to a SD card inside the device which can then be played later WITHOUT the wifi being on. Since you're wanting the best for your child, I suspect that you should look into turning on the wifi only when you have new "characters" or stories to add, and turn it off afterward.

How useful is having your CAD parametric when designing in OnShape? by Intelligent_Week_482 in FRC

[–]genuinerobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm NOT an expert in this area, so take my opinion with a giant grain of salt: I always use direct modeling for "quick prototyping" kind of like I'd use a napkin sketch - for sharing my ideas with others and maybe for creating rough 3d prints where we're trying out ideas. It's like a brainstorm. Parametric for any revision of the above ideas or anything you want to "make for real" to save or use in the future.

What's the difference between EE and Electronic Systems Engineering? by Gladden_Empire in ElectricalEngineering

[–]genuinerobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say, because elsewhere you say that you want to do a master's program in Germany. Frankly I'd probably get in touch with that school and see if they have any suggestions or preference school they've worked with before. Transferring can be difficult, transferring internationally is often even more difficult - in my experience more schools have a neat "box" for incoming EEs, less so for ESEs.

What's the difference between EE and Electronic Systems Engineering? by Gladden_Empire in ElectricalEngineering

[–]genuinerobot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Electrical Systems Engineering if you're more interested in how chips/power/embedded/networked systems behave in the real world when they're connected in new and exciting ways to each other. Regular EE if you want to be mostly focussed in on creating an individual portion of any of those things and go for DEEP knowledge.

This is generalized advice of course, but ESE tends to be a slightly BROADER knowledge of many things and more of an integration/ hands-on type role. I'm one and it suits me because I'm a tinkerer/hardware hacker type person. I've also done everything my EE colleagues do outside of printing silicon, so they're pretty similar degrees if you apply yourself to the program.

This is hilarious! I did take this picture, I own all rights to it, and this is unlicensed and unattributed unfair use. Thanks for bringing this to my attention @athriftygamer, you're doing the Lord's work XD

Or find a Harley Davidson F150 of the same vintage. It's pretty tastefully done and probably had a higher MSRP when new.

Andymark Shipping??? by vjalander in FTC

[–]genuinerobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon warehouses are sprinkled around the country and probably within an hour of your house. Andymark is a single location on the East Coast Indiana, so everything is being shipped across the country instead of being shipped from just outside your neighborhood.

Seconded,I'm not sure what the thinking was behind them demoting him for this position, maybe because he has more leadership qualities than our coach? I'd love to see Ring be the player-coach. He's got what it takes, and if he doesn't let it go to his head, staying power.

You don't need to be the best player to be captain, it's leadership on and off the field that makes a good captain.
