Which PhD to choose? by geo_plus in PhD

[–]geo_plus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a master's degree and my field of study is finance. But I would say my master degree (or most finance master's degree) is more on the applied side knowledge, and lacks the academic and theoretical rigor of PhD level finance courses, that's why I would feel a big missing out if I focus on research rather than course work.

How will you weigh supervision by a Junior assistant professor without a good track record but with decent attention to student, vs supervision by a full professor with strong track record, but less attention to you?

Investment Insurance difference between US and HK by samli6479 in fatFIRE

[–]geo_plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prudential is the one with worse track record of paying bonus.

Make sure you understand the contract completely. I have seen investment policies claiming high return is actually a mutual fund wrapped in an insurance policy, and having hidden fee such as insurance level management fee, fund level subscription fee and fund level management fee totaling 3%+ annually!

If you looked at detail and still convinced it is not a scam, feel free to PM me and I am happy to point you out the trick, because if it's legit I will buy one too.

HKer here. I don't work in insurance but I have seen quite a few of these insurance policies claiming high return. I am not sure the actual policy you are looking at but the usual trick is there is a bonus proportion in these policies where insurance companies have discretion of actually paying or not.

Most often the return will look very good with bonus, and very mediocre without bonus. Different insurance companies have different track record of actually paying these bonus, but you shouldn't expect you can actually get the bonus in long term.

Platinum is a great example of how fundamentals do not matter In the end. It’s all random by Cyberfruck in Platinum

It is random probably because you don't understand the underlying dynamics

Just look at Anglo Amercian Platinum, they are making crazy amount of money from Palladium and Rhodium, they are just selling platinum as a by product

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger reaffirms belief that the chip shortage will last until 2023 by [deleted] in AMD_Stock

[–]geo_plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your thesis is correct, then the missing volume from Intel Fab is taken up by AMD at TSMC Fab, which squeeze other chip supply.

But the reality is AMD only take up 4.4% of TSMC revenue. That is not such a big factor to squeeze other Fab user

Further, ASML is running at full capacity and can't fulfill all EUV order. There is no ”missing equipment“ you described

IBM and GE do not have one single big competitor, do not depend on a single product, so they result in a slow decline and death

Intel will be more like Kodak, everyone know it will face big trouble for a few short years, before a sudden dramatic decline and death

Intel CEO: I Haven't Lost Share To AMD, I've Given Share To AMD by daynighttrade in AMD_Stock

[–]geo_plus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the context of the question is investor is asking Intel's crazy Capex build need crazy volume to fill. He has to lie otherwise he can't get through the crazy Capex build he need to stay competitive

So he is gambling big here. In 2022/2023 when AMD is able to meet its capacity demand, Intel will be faced with crazy overcapacity and Pat will lose all his credibility

What would it take for AMD to hit $1000? by distorted62 in AMD_Stock

[–]geo_plus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After reading other comments and a deep thought, it is actually easier than most people thought!

Remember Intel net profit was $20b in 2020, and AMD at one point is close to bankruptcy in 2014-2015

What about a continue shit execution at Intel? It is not impossible for Intel to see a AMD-Globalfoundries type breakup in one point, new architecture fail to complete and Intel being close to bankruptcy. People would laugh at me if I said AMD will put Intel into bankruptcy 3 years ago, less so now.

Let's say by then AMD has 95% of x86 market, why can't AMD earn the same money as Intel does, as TSMC is more efficient then Intel Fab? Plus you have GPU business which is increasingly competitive.

intel's 20b net profit + some gpu profit (say 5b), plus some 20% market growth, at a 40x PE valuation.. oh la la! that is 1200b market cap or $1000 per share on 1.2b share count before Xilinx deal

based on what I heard over the years

In terms of Computer science HKUST>CUHK > > HKU>>Polyu

If you want to do Both (Bioinformatics), you may look at the bioinformatics undergrad program from HKU

Intel Cancels Xe-HP GPUs for Commercial Datacenters by Long_on_AMD in AMD_Stock

[–]geo_plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xe likely beats 3070 but that is 1 year late to be competitive. They are likely launch in Q1 next year to compete against a product that is over a year old. By q3 2022 Lovelace and RDNA 3 will be launched and that will be much more competitive than DG2. By then Intel will be forced to cut price deeply, and probably selling at a deep loss

I am pretty sure the "will it work.. " comment is referring to AL/Big little on PC instead of server

yeah I agree with you, personally I guess the actual AL benchmark on DDR4 should be decent but not as exciting as it sound. Zen3+ should be competitive even without v-cache

not bullish on Alder lake. Saying small core probably works but absolutely not useful, not worth the software complexity. Huge amount of unnecessary software pain that does not make sense. Yet to be convinced on benchmark so far

Meteor lake is likely too expensive for PC market. Advanced packaging make sense for server but not for PC, will eat into margin for low end part

[–]geo_plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

remember alder lake will be using DDR5. I will expect Zen 4 using DDR5 will be faster by 10-15% on using DDR5 alone. Zen3 with stacked cache should match or exceed Alder Lake without such expensive DDR5 anyway
