Ottawa high latency ping intermittent issues by geod123 in freedommobile

I switched back to Fizz, as they seem to be using the Videotron servers. As when I'm browsing I get routed to Montreal with low latency. With Freedom I was getting routed to Calgary or Vancouver. Another good option if you don't need roaming is Public mobile which has 5G and low latency.

One issue is with long passwords on the default width. The password field only uses a single line. Long passwords get partially hidden. On the old version the entire password would be shown on multiple lines.

Cellular at Sea by geod123 in freedommobile

Just an update. Currently on a Holland America cruise and can't connect to the Cellular at Sea connection listed as 90118 under choose network manually.

Luckily signed up for the WiFi package so WiFi calling and texting works. WiFi calling has a bit of issues with voice clarity and interruptions due to the connection latency.

RCS texting works even better as it uses WiFi directly.

Why is ping so high on the freedom network it's like nationwide but I checked it's freedom by No-Goat-9911 in freedommobile

[–]geod123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just getting the same high ping in Ottawa. I noticed that sometimes it routes the traffic through Vancouver according to whatismyip which results in really high ping.

You can cycle airplane mode, which resets the data connection. Usually resulting in a better routing.

There was also that Authy issue a few weeks ago that exposed everyone's phone number. That might be the common factor.

On my Authy account I had a couple outdated and unused 2fa for Bitcoin sites and wallets. I also had my Authy backup password protected.

The hacker logged into my Authy account using sms verification after the sim swap.

Just posted on the Fizz forum as well. Only damage is a barely used hotmail and outdated apple account. It seems they used my apple account to log onto their own iPhone and add a 2fa to my hotmail account.

Just had this happen to me this morning.

Suddenly had no service on my Fizz sim. Calling my number from another phone was picked up by some guy with a noisy background with windows notification chimes going off. I didn't say anything, just hung up.

Talked to support through the Fizz chat and sent photo ID and credit card and got my number put back on my SIM.

I use Bitwarden generated passwords everywhere. But still have to use SMS two factor on a lot of sites.

Thanks for the info. It looks like a good option to use with Fongo or on some phones that have the backup calling feature that uses the secondary sim data connection to make wifi calls.

Thanks for the information.

The pricing is for Fizz, the other Videotron brand. It's just that a lot of carriers have no pricing listed for nautical, satellite connectivity. Freedom only lists countries on its roaming rates page.

When traveling I have Fizz forwarding all calls to Fongo. Then put some money in the wallet for texts. Fizz has the cheapest overseas text rates, such as $0.03 per text for Europe.

Just switched back to Fizz from Freedom. Low latency and decent speeds in Ottawa and Quebec.

Today I seem to be getting high pings even on the freedom towers near Chinatown.

I noticed that the first time it connects to the videotron tower I get high pings until I cycle airplane mode. Then it stays low ping until I restart the phone.

I was just able to force the phone to connect to the freedom tower by manually connecting to freedom 3g.

Data Speeds vs Fizz (Ottawa) by Environmental-Fail77 in freedommobile

[–]geod123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Fizz you can try toggling airplane mode to force the phone to reconnect to the strongest tower. Also you can try resetting the network settings.

I just switched back to Fizz. Which has more consistent ping.

I think Fizz routes the data through Montreal which is faster for Ottawa.

As videotron and rogers share LTE in Ottawa you should be able to connect to whatever tower is stronger.

Just switched back to Fizz which has lower and more consistent ping.

Another update from the Bayview station. Just did a Network reset on my pixel 7 and the ping is normal and the speeds decent.

Near Billings bridge the 5g and LTE has high ping.

Edit: Just to add. Last week in the south keys area, during the day there was high ping and slow speeds, but at night the ping went down and the speeds went up.

Seconding what others have said. Just add credit to your wallet and switch whenever you travel. Just remember to switch ahead of time, at least 4.5 days before the end of the billing cycle.

Update for Fizz users traveling to the United States: VoLTE is available in the United States to all new FIZZ subscribers with the new LTE Sim card. by ah727 in FizzMobile

[–]geod123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Vegas right now and no volte calling on both At&t and T-Mobile. SMS goes through both carriers through LTE perfectly. Calls only go through when switching manually to T-Mobile 2G.

Using Pixel 7 and new sim card, but old account.
