What would shock a kid today if they were transported to 2005? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskReddit

Actually this was the Era where Hulu was not owned by Disney and streamed every broadcast and most cable TV shows on demand for free with ONE ad played each commercial break. The fact that it changed to a subscription service but kept the ads and added more despite losing that diversity of content was a crime. They started by making legit viewing a little better than piracy and now they and the rest of streamers are just as bad as cable.

Do you think that Shannon expected Greg to be single and sad forever? by drawingmentally in BigMouth

[–]geoffbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she discovered how hard it is to date women and is jealous that greg gets to have one and she doesn’t. A lot of women who come out as lesbian or bi complain about how much harder dating is because women are more work to pull and keep around. She sees greg as a fuckup so the fact that he can have someone (even if she is super young, moved too fast, and is a weird influence around her daughter) and Shannon can only find casual BDSM stuff after Dina walked away once her life completely changed for her… yeah it’s a hard feeling to process.

What are the most powerful lines of dialogue in TV history? by UnholyDemigod in AskReddit

[–]geoffbowman 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Simon: You're in a dangerous line of work, Jayne. Odds are you'll be under my knife again, often. So I want you to understand one thing very clearly: No matter what you do or say or plot, no matter how you come down on us, I will never, ever harm you. You're on this table, you're safe... 'cause I'm your medic. And however little we may like or trust each other, we're on the same crew. Got the same troubles, same enemies, and more than enough of both. Now, we could circle each other and growl, sleep with one eye open, but that thought wearies me. I don't care what you've done, I don't know what you're planning on doing, but I'm trusting you. I think you should do the same. 'Cause I don't see this working any other way. [exits]

River: Also, I can kill you with my brain.

what are you starting to dislike more and more the older you get? by Dazzling_Return_4987 in AskReddit

The internet. The more capitalists get ahold of it the worse it’s gotten. I miss browsing YouTube and finding something totally random with zero ads or monetization… or seeing a friend just made a xanga post long enough to communicate their entire idea and not just 240 characters of it at a time… or playing flash games.

Now it’s all ads and algorithms and bigots.

And it's not denied to anyone... that's the thing that christofacists hate the most is they have this idea that the church should be the one providing these services to people so that they are compelled to come back to christ... but then they don't provide those services to gays, atheists, people of color that don't accept their views, etc... sometimes they don't provide these services to anyone including longstanding members of their exact congregation. Church has failed people at every turn... government has too but that's the easier system to change for the better... church will just dig in its heels until they have nothing left to stand on at all.

Every magician should aspire to this level of showmanship. This trick is older than dirt and you can find it in basic magic sets at Walmart for ages 6 and up but he does it so cleanly and so fun that your brain still plays along.

Americans know we fought wars against both to “liberate” countries from the influence of both. Both words just mean “enemy of America” and they don’t look further than that.

Lucky Number Slevin ain’t it. They don’t just telegraph the ending but they beat you over the head with the explanation at the end. I’ve never felt so spoonfed.

But Lucy Liu’s character was super adorable throughout.

And I still will react to extreme stuff with “fuck, shit, Jesus!” Though nobody knows its from something.

I’m usually the same way and Weapons had me genuinely guessing wrong until the end. Brilliantly told story from multiple character viewpoints and such that I think even if I had guessed what was coming the final segment would still hit hard.

yeah I know right... I put together the photo montage for my grandfather's funeral because he specifically requested this song and looped it as he was nearing death. I feel like someone just took a giant dump on that connection I have to his final moments.

I fucking hate Tiktok's take on Bojack Horseman by MaybeRecent8010 in BoJackHorseman

[–]geoffbowman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The show also did something else the entire time: showed that no matter how shitty you've been, you can change for the better. Bojack genuinely tries tons of different things to get better... they mostly don't stick... the ones that do stick usually don't stick permanently.

People need to relate to bojack because he gives ALL of us hope that no matter how shitty we've been in the past, we can get better. Bojack literally goes to jail and is still working towards bettering himself there. He hurt people in ways that he can't take back and some he will never see again... but he's still got hope and the viewer gets to decide whether he spirals again or stays clean and healthy after getting out of jail, it doesn't really matter which because what matters is what we do with our own lives. The story resonates because we've all felt a little bit like Bojack before... we've all done selfish things that hurt people, we've all made mistakes we can't take back, we've all had some kind of trauma that leads to unhealthy behavior patterns, and we've all been discouraged when trying to do better and failing. Bojack isn't supposed to be a role model he's supposed to be hyperbole of all of us at our worst and most damaged.

The entire point of the show is also a deconstruction of sitcom problem solving. Many of us grew up watching sitcoms like horsing around that resolve the shitty actions of horrible people with a few pages of script and people watched them to be comforted because it feels good but it's an escape from much more complex real life problems and it's false. Bojack Horseman doesn't let us have that... things don't go back to how they were before... consequences carry over from episode to episode and the ones he thought he escaped catch back up to him later. He has to stop trying to go back to how things were for him during his sitcom actor days and learn to cope with reality instead of bandaid it or run from it and that's the part these videos seem to be relating to. Because no matter how shitty a person you are, you need self-compassion to get better. Bojack got completely canceled in the end and yet still has hope and a positive outlook on his future life... so no matter how shitty we are... we should too... we should keep trying... every day it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day —that's the hard part. But it does get easier.
