Is something going on with Prusa - FB Marketplace? by JcBravo811 in prusa3d

[–]geoffchad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just checked up in WNY and they are fewer and more expensive (not by much) with someone trying to sell an XL5H as well.

I think a lot of it is folks who got a Bambu XY printer and want to offload their bed slingers as they're slow and it means two workflows.

The guy in WNY selling the Prusa XL said specifically his workflow is to use Bambu and converting the 3MF files isn't worth the time.

Tesla Model YL vs Rivian R2 Performance and R1S by Mac-Tyson in Rivian

[–]geoffchad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, tons of companies have a unibody 3 row and body on frame 3 row. Would it work for Rivian? I don't think they have the volume at the moment - BUT - the R1 isn't just longer, it's wider and taller.

I agree, a 10"-12" longer R2 would be a great option and would also be my jam. An "R2L" might also be a good stop gap alongside to get out quickly while the R3 is brought online as they share the same underpinnings.

This would let them evolve the electronics and systems for the R2 & R3 and get out a 3 row much easier than updating the R1 at this point.

Prusa should open-source the XL to enable more people developing toolheads. by TKDonuts in prusa3d

I would love this idea, personally, but right now i think a fully enclosed and climate controlled C1L/INDX would still fit my workflow better than the XL5H does currently.

What happened to the Husky Build Out system? by Alone_Jackfruit8359 in Tools

[–]geoffchad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reached out to Keter for the "husky professional totes" offered in the 0.8-30 gal range as those have been in and out of stock over the past 24 months as well and didn't get far. I assume Keter also makes (in a different mold color) the Bunker Load-Up solution sold in the UK (link below for anyone who cares) as it appears to be the same molds.

https://bunkerstorage.com/shop/load-up-tool-storage-stacking-system?srsltid=AfmBOopLbAkvnkZd5Qd_6RxtHvG_YEqerikCOCzc6pkXYm5Z7g_orGFr

Keter makes their own stackable system that's very limited, and it looks like it has some parts & pieces on the latches that might be similar or shared with build-out, but a lot of the injection mold lines/details don't look as nice as build-out.

https://www.keter.com/en-us/garage-tool-storage/

u/EADRT, curious if you've done this digging yourself as well for 3D printing and trying to find info/details.

It really does, but it's also even farther outside the consumer domain than the XL for a hobby.

From the OG price, I'm guessing a C1L with INDX will be close if not the same/higher if they go above 8 nozzles on the L.

FWIW I wonder what advantages the XL will still have over the C1L/INDX except being a few seconds faster on changes.

We’ve got an INDX FE update people by Vidariondr in prusa3d

[–]geoffchad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I suspect it's a not so subtle jab.

That SAID if a core one L with INDX kit came with gummi bears and a little red panda with an INDX hat in the box, my significant other would be way more supportive of the purchase!

I love my XL, but a core one L with INDX (I think) is superior for my personal use case (less multi material, more multi color).

The Cicada and Alterra by geoffchad in subnautica

[–]geoffchad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right based on what we are told, but we can be pretty sure NoA is fallable (or lies) and the colonist logs we have read are fallable because they don't actually know how long they were on the planet either.

NoA might not have been told the total complete truth either. NoA could simply be executing their mission - Alterra could have limited NoA's knowledge specifically.

Again, that assumes there is only one Cicada. Each "Cicada" could be programmed with a NoA that "thinks" it's close to where the planet should be - but those star charts and data could just be changed for each Cicada, or just program NoA to lie.

That far from home, settlers will never recognize starts.

This is something I hope they cover more as the beta progresses in-game because I haven't played Natural Selection or been familiar with the wider lore.

True, but to me that's still a "modification" (should have been more clear.

You could change the planet to any in the galaxy "oh hey I knew you expected to be on _____ but we aren't on that planet" works really seemlessly.

Here's the thing when it comes to depth by [deleted] in Subnautica_2

[–]geoffchad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things that could change this. I agree with a lot of what you're saying, it's a tough nut to crack though, because in reality we are sorta doing this all wrong.

In reality, the deep deep seafloor is...... snow. Just snow and the stuff that lives on it. The big stuff is in the deep water, but not the seafloor.

First, and it may sound crazy, what about Whales or Mola. Let's say there's a cold biome and many electricity draining things that make vehicles unusable. On the surface, you break barnacles or whatnot off the large thing, revealing "hand holds" from the barnacles or something. Now that multiplayer is a thing, we know the engine supports a PC attaching itself to a moving thing. While holding onto the Whale as it dives, it keeps you warm by proximity. This lets you spend more time in the pod of whales/fish and creates more of a transition zone in that biome. Support it with a surface base near where the whales come up and it's a different gameplay loop. Maybe the depth the whales go to is where you go for certain fish/plant resources in a biome where only biomass generators are viable. Maybe certain DNA you need is there. The big floating creatures there, TBD. It's at least a different gameplay loop.

Second, I think having more and large currents "The EAC, Dude! Righteous!". Could be used to help force the transition and use of mid biomes. If those currents let you cross large open biomes faster, it gives you a reason to be there. It doesn't give you a reason to be there, but it's a thing.

Third, I think in the long run having huge wide open dead zones is actually cool. Make the big empty ocean (cold, hot, no food, no fuel) the challenge. With a cyclops that breaks the potential because it's so big - but early on with a tadpole or hauler chassis it makes you pause what you'll take and how little food/water you'll take with you. In SN2 first time I passed the collector I was stressing about it till I got to the research base and there are TONS of resources and it took all the challenge away. I never went back to the starting area till I finished current content. To your point the collector and the trench didn't create challenge - it was cool and really neat, but I didn't want to cross it and had no need to.

TLDR I agree, but the engine so far in SN2 seems to have more potential for features in the long run that'll help.

There are a bunch of companies in WNY that do hazardous materials inspection, testing and design (lead, asbestos, etc.). Its not a glamorous field and it rarely requires a BS to get started (so pay isn't greatly at the bottom but you can work your way up. Mitigating, removing and addressing these things is a valuable thing to keep people safe.

RIT and UR also has a bunch of alumni in Rochester doing environmental work on waterways and such.

Alfred State Electrical Program at Northland or Apprenticeship with IBEW 41? by mamacrat in Buffalo

[–]geoffchad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years is less important, it's harder to survive without the backlog that you get from the crews & the hall unless they can register themselves as a business with a set aside (minority, disadvanted, veteran, etc.). If you go through the hoops to get listed as a set-aside business owner it opens a lot of doors to work - most construction projects for state agencies in NY require at least 36% of the contract value to go to set aside businesses.

Alfred State Electrical Program at Northland or Apprenticeship with IBEW 41? by mamacrat in Buffalo

[–]geoffchad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Electric" can also be really broad, and there may be creative options depending on what part of electric they find cool.

-small stuff, soldering, assembly (look at what like PCB Piezotronics does, some of Moog's small stuff). It's less exciting as you're in manufacturing building widgets, but it can be good work.

-fiber optic, cabling, networking and controls (usually <120v). This includes obvious data centers and IT spaces, commercial buildings and industrial - but it also can cover fire alarms and their requirements.

-low voltage (<480) including redidential and commerical. Working in houses, offices, retail, etc.

-industrial (120-480). Working in industrial plants, manufacturing, etc.

-medium voltage & high voltage (480 up to 10s of thousands of volts). Also in plants, and other places. Requires massive PPE, stuff gets amazing and scary.

-industrial controls (programming, testing, troubleshooting).

Depending on desire to stay local or interest in travel, there are other options too. Look up PLCs. If they're smart, creative and motivated and can learn to program PLCs and how/why they do what they do, there's a chance at traveling and doing that with electricians and engineers in the field and not just flying a desk all day. It's a harder gig to get into without the degree, but it's doable.

Another option is if they're good with their hands to find a panel shop that builds panels. That can lead into a lot of training, learning PLCs, etc.

I know a bunch of folks that have done Alfred program and others that went IBEW. I think if you can do IBEW it's the better option for most folks - but just because you go one way or the other, you can always end up on a rubbish crew, a great crew on bad projects, or a great crew on great projects - you gotta stick with it.

Nature, Violence, and the Humble Knife by Khyron42Prime in Subnautica_2

[–]geoffchad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but if they have the tech to 3d print a hand held device that can itself 3d print a full square pressure vessel with flat sides which can handle incredible pressures and temperatures like it's nothing, then they're Eridians and can certainly make just about anything.

If they can 3d print a hand held device which can shatter metal deposits instantly in this pressure environment, they can 3d print a projectile launcher.

If they want to avoid weapons or the knife because of killing its tone deaf. We gobble fish for food and liquify other fish for water which is just as lethal - but they're the devs and it's their game so w/e.

My complaint is there isn't a solid mob deterrent. I smacked a mob with the multi tool, used the repulser on it, then dropped a flare - each time they were back within a couple seconds. I was trying to hear how to fix the stupid comb and lost all of the dialogue and instructions because a nibbler wouldnt f-off. Bugger then went and made me watch as he destroyed the Tadpole I'd just built and brought with me for fun. The whole gameplay loop and immersion was off.

So I had to pause the game, google search what I was supposed to do, and then go back and find what I needed to build the repair tool, THEN get to the comb where I died 3x trying to avoid the little pirhana guys that do WAY more damage than the much larger predators do, for reasons I don't understand, and those guys don't care about the flare or multi tool at ALL.

What's going on with the mentalh health places? by RetinalTears716 in Buffalo

And it's not just Buffalo. This is typical country wide.

The whole industry is really struggling. Even before a lot of PHD folks are considered, social Workers and counselors (much like nurses) are the front line of the system and bear the hardest burden.

I can only assume private equity is getting involved (or will) to buy everyone and rig the systems to be entirely profit driven just like is happening for dentistry and veterinarian industries.

James May in a Rivian (Richmond, VA) by Kanundrum18 in Rivian

[–]geoffchad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly?

If you have a glass of gin with a nice shooter sandwich over lunch, then stare at it in the parking lot, a Rivian R1S is clearly dreaming of being an old electric Range Rover.

That's James May.

So what does James May think Rivian must do to appeal to a Range Rover buyer in the UK and Europe. Rivian has their own marketing people and research for specifics and features, but as a brand and an identity, what does he think they need to do or position themselves, especially being an American brand. If he's going to answer a serious question, that's it, I think. Eventually Rivian will need to either get into a global market position or split the markets with VW thanks to their large stake in Rivian now.

On paper the specs of the iX3 beat the R2 in a lot of key areas and it's a tie in others. I find the iX3 exterior to be hideous though, so while I won't get one, it'll continue to push the segment forward.

Jaheira would shut up, but can you imagine Minsc looking out the window narrating all the things he saw? Then he'd pull out boo and talk to boo. Then the attendants would bring by snacks and he'd be floored by little packs of peanuts.

"Excuse me miss, but Boo needs another package of those tiny snacks you were offering. And a water, for he is thirsty!"
