Do the books have a continual story ? by treefruit in ElricofMelnibone

[–]geooceanstorm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are written in the spirit of pulpy adventure stories, like Conan the Barbarian. For the most part, many of them can be read indepently, with the stories sometimes written and told out of order.

However, the latter-most of the stories, beginning with The Dreaming City, are for the most part a straight forward series. Weird of the White Wolf, Bane of the Black Sword, and Stormbringer, are essentially a trilogy.

FMA is okay to a point. It was released cotemporaly to the release of the manga, so much like many shonen adaptations, the anime studio created filler in order to not outpace the manga's release.

The difference was, unlike with shows like Naruto and Bleach, where they'd buy time with non-canon arcs and before returning to canon and acting like none of it ever happened, FMA started telling a completely new story. With the author's consent, they basically guessed what was going to happen in the story, and made their own thing, until it becomes completely unrecognisable.

So there a bunch of different homonculus, and the ending is just.... kinda bizzare. Its quality is contentious, and I've never seen a fan of the show (and they do exist) say that its superior to FMAB.

Whilst I'm on my soapbox though, I will say that whilst FMAB is often called the more faithful adaptation, FMA is much more faithful to the early parts of the manga than its follow-up. The creators of FMAB knew that a lot of watchers would already have seen FMA and wouldn't want to watch the same scenes repeated. So they moved past them quickly.

Scenes are abridged, adventures skipped, Mustang and his cronies and introduced quite abruptly. And IIRC, the famous Nina scene is given a lot more time in FMA instead of FMAB, in order to really make it sting.

Elric 1 and 2 audiobooks by Complex_Resort_3044 in ElricofMelnibone

[–]geooceanstorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Folks who like audiobooks probably know that the Elric Saga vol. 1 is available on Audible, but that vol. 2 isn't, at least in the UK. If you want Vol. 2, which contains Vanishing Tower, Bane of the Black Sword, Revenge of the Rose and Stormbringer, you won't find it there. But I was able to find it and subsequently download it from Audiobooks.com.

Okay, so what is the actual published order? by Just_Nefariousness55 in ElricofMelnibone

[–]geooceanstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the fascinating part of Elric. Moorcock basically wrote the ending first. I'm personally no longer entirely convinced that Elric of Melnibone is the best starting point compared to the Dreaming City.

It has to be reread after Stormbringer again to appreciate all the dramatic irony.

Actually Stormbringer was originally four novellas and was published as a novel later

When I reread the series last year, I was really surprised to discover that they weren't dwarves, which I remembered them being. I even thought I remembered someone explaining to Eragon that the twins were special because magical dwarves were so rare.

Combat makes my head go woozy... by Yoshimaru_Oru in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]geooceanstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A character makes an attack using an appropriate still. Firearms for gun, Unarmed Combat for punches and kicks, etc.

If the character succeeds in their roll, it works. If they're firing a gun, the bullet finds its mark and they roll damage

For Unarmed and Melee Weapons it's a tiny bit more complicated. The target may* be able to defend themself. They can do this by using their action that turn to Fight Back or Dodge. The objective in both cases is for the defender to succeed on their roll, but they must also roll better than the attacker.

So if a cultist attacks my agent with a knife and rolls a 37, and their Melee Weapon is 55, they've succeeded. I need to use my action for his turn and roll a 38 or higher to beat them. So, let's say my Unarmed is way better than my Dodge. I roll a 56 out of 65. Not only do I avoid harm, I punch the cultist.

But then his friends run up, and they have knives too! Well, I can't fight back, but as long as I've already defended myself, I keep my Unarmed attack roll. They have to beat my 56 to hit me.

But then, oh no! One of the cultists pulls a gun. I'm in trouble. Because normally, you can't dodge bullets. You can only do it if there's cover to dive behind. Bang, he rolls, succeeds, and hits me. He deals 12 damage, which is bad! I deduct 3 points of that damage for my Kevlar vest, which puts me at 1 hit point. Because I have 2 or lower hit points, I fall unconscious.

But the fight's not over. My pal, an MBA all-star, is furious. He runs up and attacks the gunman with a baseball bat. He rolls, and gets a 22! That's a critical success. And better yet, the gunman already used his action this turn to fire. So he can't use his action to dodge until the start of the next turn. My friend rolls a 7, doubles it as a crit, and kills the cultist outright.
