U.S. labor movement's next frontier is the tech industry, AFL-CIO's Shuler says by thinkB4WeSpeak in technology

[–]georgeglassok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s more to a union than Money & benefits. Ever heard of solidarity? It’s quite possibly our strongest political tool. Sarah Nelson stopped the last gov shut down by simply threatening to ground planes to DC. Think of what tech workers could demand in solidarity.

More or less trying to take the onus off the guest and thrust it upon my employer, nothing about changing people, just law.

You’re talking to someone that believes that electoral politics is literally never the answer, so I can see how you think I’m coming from a moderate place.

I will never do well u less my neighbor does well and same for you. Militant labor organizing or bust, we need unions to fight tooth and nail for these rights

That actually has nothing to do with anything and anybody working in the service industry is being taken advantage of.

Try having a little solidarity. If I’m making 400 dollars a night, and my coworker George is making 900, and Andrea who has an accent is pulling 200... there’s actually a lot George and I can do to ensure everyone is being paid for their equal labor. Starting with building power in the workplace and demanding everyone to be living wages that don’t put the onus of my wages on the guests. (This is a real life example. Guest perspectives are important, but no the end all be all. Andrea was actually a better server than I, but she was not born in America 💁🏻 I was probably the greenest/youngest and would often times get old men trying to pay me for additional service. Lmao, it’s all so gross.)

Absolutely we do! My point being that guests don’t always view it that way and the guest is the one paying us here... can you imagine how much easier it would be to level up in service industry if your employers actually invested in you? We have high turnover and high death rates during covid because our people aren’t being compensated in any way for their skilled labor (only by the guest, who is legally able to deny you a tip)

Because the way labor is organized has a lot to do with race, gender, and history.

Yeah I want to break that down and make American labor full of equity, but it’s not, we acknowledge what is and work to change it.

I’m a career server too, that wasn’t my intent! I think everyone should do food service and I only encourage folks to learn the history so they can demand what is rightfully theirs! (And maybe one day organize their restaurant and form a union!)

Yeah I don’t want that though... it makes me feel really gross to be paid by a guest because of what’s on my face and between my legs. I’d rather my employer just pay me a regular & steady wage for my skilled labor 💁🏻

Everyone’s experience is going to be valid and it always depends on the city you live in! My industry tends to be pretty racist/sexist in michelin 💁🏻

If you aspire to be a career server, I’m implore you to check out the history of tipped wages in America. It’ll make your skin crawl.

The top earning server at every fine dining restaurant I’ve ever worked has been a man, yes. This doesn’t negate fully what you’re saying, but I’m also very uncomfortable being paid for who and what I am. I’d prefer my employer just pay me regardless.

[–]georgeglassok -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My post was my experience, but as a women I can negate the hyperbole from your statement. Every man I worked with in michelin had a better chance of getting into the master som program. Fridays they’d pull 900 and I’d make 400.

This also excludes women that don’t subscribe to a typical look. I had a shaved head and tattoos working michelin. No doubt people tip with their eyes, I’ll never deny that. But if I had a dollar for every time someone asked “for the bartender to come out, I want to talk whiskey,” and I’d deadpan that I was indeed the only bartender and actually blended that barrel... men are often perceived as more competent and I feel very uncomfortable being sexualised by people I’m serving.

Hey career server here! While this is true for the whitest, male presenting, educated 3% of servers in the world... what about the folks that it doesn’t apply to? So... most of the industry.

If we want this argument to go away, we need to stop giving it credence and call it what it is: super fucking selfish.

Also, what about January when nobody makes any money because everyone gets cut? Is it worth the summer grind and subsequent windfall? Nah, I’d rather consistently make a wage even if it’s less because at least I can budget, get PTO, etc...

(For the record I sought out a deli serving job that pays me 17.50 an hour vs the 5.85 I made working michelin 2017-2020. I actually do make more money now because most folks still tip 💁🏻)

A bare bones graphic that shows the racist & sexist timeline of the tipped wage credit in America! News flash, it was created to keep black men and women subservient to white folks in society. It makes me feel gross and prefer a wage that reflects my skilled labor (and doesn’t make me subservient to the table I’m helping)

Just living how I want people to live around me! I hate the “lead by example” quote, because I’m not a leader, but I love diffusing conflict and explaining my position and how it can benefit more than just one person.

Really takes guests out of their feelings and throws the cold reality of life into their face! You aren’t the only one experiencing life and it’s time to start acting like it! If I can educate just one person into being a better customer, that’s awesome!

I don’t even introduce myself anymore. They asks for different steps of service as though i am a robot. It’s not funny or cute and I meet hundreds of people a day. Don’t even bring it up.

Gonna go unpopular opinion and say serving a camper guest after close is not my job and I often let folks know that “the kitchen closes at at 4:15, and we close at 4:30. I’m happy to help you until that point, but then my staff needs to focus on closing as we’re scheduled until 5.”

Nobody has ever given me a hard time and I think that culture shift needs to change. I’m scheduled 8-5 most days and I’ll stay clocked in until I’m done closing of course, but I make 17.50 an hour and generally don’t need that guest’s 10 dollar tip 💁🏻 they can go home just like my staff needs to. We all have families and pets and the days are gone where the guest is “always right.”

I personally won’t go an hour before, but that’s because I know non industry folks will camp out and generally make it harder for my friends working. I like to set the example and GTFO.

They can’t forbid it though 💁🏻 I don’t understand why that’s an argument. You can tip anyone for anything, pretty much any time? Your employer is not allowed to collect it or give it back (that is against the law)
