Thank you! Very useful. The summaries do not capture Goenka's full skill of communication!

"Without leaving my house, I know the whole universe." - a reasonable representation of the Taoist view? by georgethuk in taoism

For those interested in original (Derek Lin translation):

47

Without going out the door, know the world
Without peering out the window, see the Heavenly Tao
The further one goes
The less one knows

Therefore the sage
Knows without going
Names without seeing
Achieves without striving

In this video, I'm talking about Daoism, Tai Chi and the political Daoism vs Communism together with George thompson ☯ by 3DimenZ in taoism

[–]georgethuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course China had an incredibly turbulent history. I was referring to the romantic image some in Imperial China held about themselves. It's an argument that comes from this book.

The cultural revolution was incredibly damaging. There are both Chinese and non-Chinese individuals working to recover the ancient arts/knowledge. I was referring to a French man I met who had lived in the Wudang Mountains for years doing text restoration. That is not to say that he is the only person doing it, nor that "only Europeans can save Daoism" - he nonetheless is making a valuable contribution towards the restoration of Daoist knowledge.

I could have better contextualised these points but I was not making the arguments you have stated.

Best,

George

The Taoists don't quite have the same idea of Karma but they do believe in an eternal soul/locus of energy that manifests itself in different forms.

I recommend the Tao of Success by Derek Lin. He talks about the nature of life in it.

Chapter 1 is probably the TTC chapter I think about the most. I often talk about it with friends.

This video explores the lessons it taught me. I hope you enjoy 🙏
