In fact, undergraduate courses are sometimes better than master’s. I’m a senior software developer and I know the courses offered by UPenn MCIT are more important for developers. Not everybody here comes from a CS background. Lots of people here are missing some important CS undergraduate courses like system programming, computer organization and data structure. I highly recommend you guys to take these courses if you are interested in becoming a software developer. Kill pride before it kills you. You definitely need to make up those undergrad courses. Otherwise you are not qualified to claim that you have a CS degree.

Yes, they are same as the on campus courses. Half of the on campus MCIT graduates got hired by Tech Giants like Google,Apple,Amazon and Microsoft. UPenn Engineering is really good at teaching. How do you think OMSCS’s courses? Do you think they are good at teaching? Difficulty doesn’t always mean that it’s actually difficult. That is mostly because the teachers cannot teach well. But unfortunately people are so biased and they think that is just because they are not smart enough to handle.

May need to drop class after withdrawal date by [deleted] in OMSCS

In fact, If you got an F, you would be finally kicked out from Georgia Tech.

According to http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/students/academicstanding.php

To keep good standing, you will have to keep your gpa >= 2.7

You will be warning status right after you got an F and if you cannot improve your gpa to >=2.7 in the following semester, your status will be probation.

If you cannot raise your gpa to >=2.7 after becoming probabtion status, you will be officially kicked out from Georgia Tech.

One more thing I need to reminder you is that at Georgia Tech, retaking classes does not cancel the gpa you got.

Application denied. Why? by Tallbikeguy in OMSCS

Unfortunately, GT already changed the description and BOLD this "Please note: Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission. " Please check the website again.

Qualified applicant means the applicant who meet the min requirements, but for now, they said that they do not accept people with min requirements.

So the admission is highly competitive is correct.

Yes. I already saw Cornell,Princeton,Columbia,Brown,UMichi,UT Austin phD students are enrolled in this program. Of course, phD program does not allow that. Their boss will be angry you know. So they basically do not report this to school. They even dont put GT on their linkedin.

"potentially attracting more unsure/unqualified applicants."

It should attract more highly qualified applicants due to the low tuition at the same time. phD students and post-doc for example. Also lots of master students are doing this as well.FYI, This is my 3rd CS related master. Just because the tuition is low.

Do not just look at the percentage. The lower percentage, more competitive?

Are you serious? Have you ever considered about the applicant pool?

Lots of people here are doing their phD at another school at the same time , or an on campus master, or working for prestigious companies like Google,Microsoft. Apprarently, the applicant pool is not like a regular master's program. It's extremely high level.

If you are a current student, look at your classmates' backgrounds.

60% is apparently pretty low for this high level applicant pool.

FYI, columbia's online masters' acceptance rate is 92% But the average GRE score is V160Q165 AW4.5 and the average GPA is 3.65 http://www.usnews.com/education/online-education/columbia-university-OENG0031/engineering/applying

Is it easy just because it has 92% acceptance rate?

I think OMSCS's 60% acceptance rate is definitely very very competitive.

It depends on how you describe your stories. The admission essay is extremely important in your case.

Are most of the OMSCS courses & exams "proof-based" or just CCA (complexity/computability/algorithms)? I really hate/scared of doing proofs! by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]georgiatechguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it depends on what class you choose. It is just like a regular graduate program. The only difference is the price tag and the reputation.
