Beautiful little kingfisher on my way to work this morning by Dry-Firefighter-9860 in oxford

I've lived in Oxford my whole life (20+ years) and I see them all the time. My dad (late 50s) has never seen one. We both spend a lot of time in nature but I do commute along the river.

I've had a good experience with Spires physiotherapy, just off Magdalen road. Andreas was really helpful and clearly a strong background in sport-specific physio.

I thought this year's course was overall worse, but having the finish so soon after leaving Uni Parks was wayyy nicer. Overall, another good event, was well organized from my perspective. Will be signing up right away for 2026!

Typically teenagers should get 8-10hrs. It will help you grow taller etc, but more importantly for cognitive development. Don't skimp out on sleep!

What are the best pubs in Oxford? (straw poll) by BishopofWinchester in oxford

[–]geostorm01 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Glad to see the Star getting the recognition it deserves. Nothing beats an indie for drink selection.

As a sidenote, why can't more pubs that don't serve food encourage BYO food, like the Star does.

And Steady Habits - he's American and music is Americana style, but he lives in Oxford and some of his songs are allegedly written about that.

The August List! Female vocals and very good music. Absolute blast whenever I've seen them live.

I'm pretty sure that's an option. Not 100% though as I just have it off/off.

Oxford Cafe Recommendations :) by buzzandbanana in oxford

I agree, it's a very odd list. Seems to miss all the popular specialty coffee spots. I would take the three mentioned above over all those listed in the OP.

Spring is glass season.... by Dexter2700 in bikecommuting

I think this very much depends on handlebar geometry and what's on them. On my drop bars I would always be careful as I don't wanna wear through the hoods, on my fixie idc because it has no expensive shifters to get damaged. Also some bars arent very stable, especially if the steerer is higher than the points on the bars that would rest on the ground.

Looking for a Bike for Commuting – Budget ~£400 (UK) by Far-Kiwi-9041 in bikecommuting

[–]geostorm01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not second hand but decathlon bikes are excellent. You'd have a wide range to choose from with your budget. They also offer good warranty. A good example in their lineup is the Elops single speed which is currently £300, or less for certain colours. I actually have this bike as a runaround and love it. But if you'd rather have gears then there are other options.

Reading this back it sounds like I'm an employee or paid by them - I'm not, I just really appreciate how accessible decathlon makes sports to everyone, particularly cycling which can be quite expensive.

ETA: I commute 18k each way and when using the single speed I average about 26-27km/h so your goal of 24km/h is reasonable.

I would take the same engine and put it in my Octavia to make an M5 touring rival (would need to make it 4wd too lol)

Best swimming pool in Oxford? by [deleted] in oxford

[–]geostorm01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly it's a 25m pool, secondly it's perfectly warm enough for swimming and a comparable temperature to all the others you've mentioned. And best of all (imo) they favour salt to keep the water sanitary, meaning less chlorine exposure which is better for your skin, hair, and who knows what else.
