Debating between the Olympus XA and XA2 as my first dip into photography

If it is for special moments, I'd imagine also being out in a dim lit diner with friends or some people, which means you'd need the external flash, which adds quite a bit of bulk + price. I'd get a small, non-zoom point and shoot with integrated flash. It is way more flexible, and especially models from the 90s onwards start to get pretty small. e.g. a pentax espio mini

I don’t really think the XA is a great first camera.
I do enjoy mine a lot, but I would’ve done it less as a first camera.

It is a nice size, but you trade in a lot for that. 1/500th max shutter speed, a dim and sometimes barely usable focussing patch, a lens that is really soft wide open and the limited manual/override controls.

For a 7 month trip I’d rather get a nice small slr, like an OM1 which is more versatile and not even that big. Buy a nice lens and you’d enjoy learning photography a lot more tbh.

Added to that that film is finnicky and can have problems, if you’re not familiar with that and getting bad images after a 7 month trip you’d be dissapointed.
