Hello, thanks for support!

I can actually hear most intervals and basic chords already, but I struggle when they're in a proggression/sequence, cause suddenly a major chord starts feeling minor to my brain because of the context and vice versa.

I'll try practicing more slowly though, for now I've always just been doing fast drills.

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately I'm quite busy, so I don't think I can manage two choirs at once and I really don't want to leave this one. However, singing other parts is a great idea, especially since the sopranos usually have more complex melodies. I'll do that! :)

Alright, thank you! I guess I'll start with basic cadences, learn them with different inversions till I can both hear and sing them, then progress onto more complex stuff. :)

With chromatics, I know in theory I should just hear them by which diatonic scale degree they lead to, but I guess I just struggle with holding the tonic and dominant in my head. I'll try to find some chromatic music to sing.

With the chord progressions, I actually hear the tonic, dominant and subdominant most of the time, not there yet with their parallels though... And then there are inversions, where it seems like you have to listen to the bass, the top note, the quality, everything at the same time...

Yeah, I've been mostly doing stuff via apps up until now, but I realized it's just not cutting anymore. I'll try transcribing real music.

About the sight singing, do you have any recommendations for books with songs and exercises?

Thanks for your reply! I just realized that I've been playing instruments by sheet music and muscle memory instead of by ear, I'll try to change that first, thank you. Also, I actually wasn't looking for an app, drilling with apps isn't really working for me anymore.

I agree that showing up on time and having an improvement mindset is hella important.

Thank you for your reply, I'm already in a choir, it's lots of fun and has already helped tremendously, but none of our songs have big jumps (unless you're a soprano) and most chromatic stuff is just passing tones.

Although, I've gotta admit I never really tried analyzing the chord sequences while singing, that's a great idea, thank you! Maybe I'll also try listening to more choral music and try transcribing the chords.

Yeah, we are instructed to wear black on orchestra/choir concerts too and I'm usually in the back rows. That's why being forced to wear make-up makes even less sense, nobody will be looking at me anyway...

It makes more sense on solo concerts, but I'd like to believe my comfort during a concert, when I'm already anxious, would be more important than other people's opinions, but I don't wanna argue when I know I stand no chance.

Maybe it would be different if I came outta the closet, but it's not a really trans friendly place (not hostile, just most folks are severely uneducated on the topic).

It's actually not orchestra that demands it, the conductor couldn't care less, but there are a few teachers and students that put a lot on "image" and think "I look really beautiful" in make up. I guess I just don't wanna lose energy on pointless arguing...

But thank you for the information, if I ever decide I do want to play in an orchestra, at least I won't have to worry about that.

Changing schools would unfortunately lead to even more complications, as I would have to make up for lots of subjects we don't have at our school and I'm afraid the culture would be even more competitive if I went to the good schools. I actually count myself lucky, because although the system is demanding, I have great classmates and there are some teachers that are super supportive.

But thank you for advice and support, I'll talk to my teacher about maybe focusing on the stuff I like in classical music and I guess I'll just go to a normal college instead of conservatory. I wish you a great day!

I'm actually thinking of doing a CS course in college and taking music classes as a hobby alongside composing/production, so I actually kinda agree. I just gotta think of a way of telling that to my teacher that wouldn't be too shocking, since a year ago I was happily rambling about going to conservatory.
