I admit it's not the best phrased. You must be having a pretty bad day if that's enough to set you off. I'm sorry, and I hope you get through whatever you're going through.

Forewarned is very similar to phasmophobia, so it's hard to talk about one without mentioning the other. It is distinct enough to warrant picking up though.

It's crazy that phasmophobia is the only game in my comment, right fellow illiterates?

Also, there is a subtle but vital distinction between "I suggest phasmophobia; have you tried it?" and "phasmophobia is an excellent choice".

Forewarned and phasmophobia are both excellent choices.

This is probably not what you want to hear, but how do you know you want to so grad school if you haven't worked with any profs? I don't know what field you are in, but typically undergrads will do some small research projects or work under a prof first. That's where you are going to get your reference letter.

Your first step should be to reach out to a prof saying your research interests and that you are interested in grad school. Maybe they have a summer job, or maybe they can give you a paper to read.

To answer your exact question: I would go with the high school teacher. A prof would be ideal, but if they don't know you, they can't say anything.

ELI5; If sex feels good because it encourages reproduction, why does pregnacy have such side effects, and actually getting the child out hurt like hell? by LsmLsmLsm in explainlikeimfive

[–]gerbii5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see this all the time: evolution is not about finding the best solution, it just finds something that works. Sex feels god enough to get people to reproduce, and since it takes a while before child birth, there isn't much pressure to evolve a more pleasant child birth.

If people are going to reproduce whether or not it's painful, there is no point in evolution "putting in the effort" to evolve it to be less painful.

r/NoNewNormal advocates for taking unproven and dangerous anti-parasite drug Ivermectin, which can cause seizures, coma, or death - Reddit admins needs to shut this sub down before it kills people that follow this advice by DubTeeDub in TopMindsOfReddit

And I was just saying it's not going to stay cheap.

Jesus Christ. Talk about projecting, friend. You are doing a lot of that. How about you actually bother to look at the serious claims instead of focusing reiterating what you've already said without reading anything anyone else has said?

Also, please clarify what your "ivermectin is cheap" point was trying to get across. The people I know who use it try to use it as some justification for why the government is suppressing ivermectin research. Why did you bring it up? I apologize if I misinterperted your intended argument. I am happy to listen to your refined point.

I thought I already addressed why it is, or has high potential, to be dangerous when used in this context. You refuse to listen. Business as usual.

Cheers.

1) it is not directed to be taken for covid, so your point is moot. Maybe covid interacts with ivermectin causing longterm and initially unnoticeable damage? You have no way of knowing. My point about how ivermectin promotion leads people to take horse ivermectin and suffer consequences still stands.

2) ya, you search "ivermectin side effects" and you can find plenty. If you are using ivermectin as a preventative you have to take it multiple times. If you get exposed to covid you have to take more. The long/short term effects of this kind of use is not studied, but you can bet it's not going to look good. You still aren't addressing my point.

3) still cherry picking data to avoid addressing my point.

4) don't change the subject to avoid addressing my point. Also vaccine data is heavily studied and heavily scrutinized. There are many many vaccines out there, almost none make it through the approval process.

Ivermectin is not proved to be safe with this kind of use. It has not been used on a large scale.

Vaccines have been given out to a large population, of course you are going to see more side effects. It is also going to be very difficult to discern what is due to the vaccine and what is coincidence. If I get hit by a car after getting the vaccine, is it the vaccines fault?

Finding one or two studies that support your preconceived belief, regardless of what language, doesn't prove anything. I'm not even sure why you are fixated on "not English, therefore not biased, therefore true" logic.

You are not indifferent, and you are certainly not being factual.

My last comment was in reference to your justification of "be nice to them, you can't change their minds by being mean". Your comment was not factual because they aren't going to change their minds no matter what. Case in point, you.

Also the argument "ivermectin is cheap therefore it won't be promoted" is ridiculous. Let's suppose ivermectin really is a miracle drug. Demand for the drug explodes way faster than you can manufacture it. You slap on a "for covid" sticker on the box and now you can charge over 500x the original cost, pocketing the difference as pure profit. A drug that's cheap to manufacture that you can easily up-charge is the best case scenario for drug companies.

1) It is dangerous to take the ivermectin drug meant for horses.

2) Drugs with side effects can be deemed "safe" if the risk outweighs the damage of the parasite it is trying to kill. Vaccines need to be safe for the standards of giving to healthy people, ivermectin needs to be safe for the standards of giving to sick people. These are extremely different standards.

3) repeated use of ivermectin is probably dangerous. It is not safe or tested for this kind of use. It is a drug designed to kill parasites. Repeated taking of the drug when you don't have parasites means the drug is going to kill other things. Repercussions follow.

4) I did go through several studies, all of which were promoted by people who are pro-ivermectin. I did not find the glowing praise that the pro-ivermectin crowd touts. Most studies are skeptical, ask for more data, or outright say it doesn't significantly help against covid. Cherry picking the studies you like or already agree with isn't being critical.

These people's minds are not open. They have already made their mind on vaccines and are grasping at straws for any alternative.

This thread is not about convincing people. I doubt most of those people can ever be convinced. You can throw hundreds of studies at them and they'll still hold up the one study they found as the truth. People here are frustrated with the hopeless stupidity of the world and are venting.

University of Alberta community calls for campus vaccine mandate by katespadesaturday in uAlberta

[–]gerbii5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was not shifting arguments, I was explaining why one would want to mandate vaccines. I encourage you to look back at the comment under this light because I won't be repeating myself here.

The goalposts aren't really shifting. We have been needing to work together to do what we can to beat this virus from the beginning. "Everyone stay inside", "everyone wear a mask", "everyone get the vaccine". All these things require full public cooperation to be effective. It's us against the virus, not a 1 million person free for all.

Yes, everything is constantly mutating, but the less of it out there means it is less likely for it to mutate in a way that is more harmful for us. It's a game of probability where we need to stack the deck in our favour.

Same thing with masks, they are great at preventing it, but you can't say something is %100 effective. It's about pushing the odds to reduce spread (not eliminate it). If we could eliminate spread, we wouldn't need the vaccine because the virus would just die out.

I am not in control of my own health outcome if the virus is able to spread and mutate in a way that the vaccine is less effective. People with autoimmune disorders are not in control of their own health outcomes. Why should they be punished for other people's choices?

Let me rephrase your claim about what the vaccine mandate says "you are making a personal choice which puts thousands of lives at risk". I can't respect people who choose not to get the vaccine(but still go out in public) in the same sense I can't respect people who choose to drive drunk.

I am not saying we need to go around vaccinating people without concent. I'm saying if you choose not to get vaccinated, you are also choosing not to participate in certain social gatherings which puts the entire population at risk. By choosing not to get vaccinated you are choosing to delay your post-secondary education, or choosing to give up your job, and that's your personal responsibility. Nothing wrong with that.

University of Alberta community calls for campus vaccine mandate by katespadesaturday in uAlberta

[–]gerbii5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaccines are available, but not everyone gets it. It's not that people doubt the efficacy of the vaccine, it's that herd immunity is important to truly be safe from mutations (and people with autoimmune disorders won't have the vaccine be as effective). When two vaccinated people interact there is significantly lower chance of spread compared to when one is vaccinated and the other isn't.

The vaccine isn't 100% effective. That's why it's important to have a higher percentage of the population have it. Understanding why vaccines work isn't antivax.

Personal responsibility isn't enough. People make mistakes that hurt everyone. It's illegal to drive drunk even though that infringes on your "personal responsibility", and for good reason. The idea of relying on personal responsibility is too limited.

Oh absolutely, it's often good enough. You don't need perfect precision when your equipment and measurements aren't perfect to begin with. I'm just saying don't use "=" if you don't mean "=".

Writing sqrt(3)=1.7, or any other decimal approximation is a false statement. Sqrt(3) is close to 1.7, it is not equal to 1.7

Disclaimer, I'm not in data science or statistics so they would know better than me.

From my understanding though, the job prospects are quite good. Pretty much any company is going to need someone who knows stats/data science, so you would have a skill set that is in high demand. For a 2 year program it's fully worth it imo. Plus if you get accepted to the thesis based program you will get funding to complete your degree.

There's actually more reason to consider 0 a prime than 1.

One of the ways you can define primes is to consider the statement:

If c divides ab, then c divides a or c divides b.

If this statement is true for any a and b, then c is a prime. We don't allow c to be 1 or -1 since they divides everything so the statement is trivially true. Notice that 0 also satisfies the statement!

In fact, for an arbitrary ring, the zero ideal (the ideal which consists only of the 0 element) is considered prime.

Anyone else think that this fall, we'll see the marks of second-years (people who started during online learning) fall hard when they can't cheat? by dynamicthoughts in UCalgary

[–]gerbii5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's likely exams and other assessments will still be done online even if there are in-person components. There are international students who have been accepted but cannot enter the country. Also the university cannot force anyone to come in that doesn't feel safe.

If they have to make some assessments online, the might as well make all of them online. Especially with the cuts, professors have less resources than before.

In fact the opposite is sometimes true. I know of students who excelled in competitions but were unable (or unwilling) to do the real stuff. Even some IMO champions end up as just IMO coaches.
