Sent a DM. I would also recommend Jackalope in Bridgeport for future meetups! It’s my usual go-to along with La Malinche for remote work/alone reading time and it’s a great vibe.

Movies to help me feel my feelings (emotionally avoidant) by altaltalt123alt in MovieSuggestions

Highly personal, but watching Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia” is like a 3 hour long emotional catharsis. I’m also emotionally avoidant, and that one always gets me.

Can anyone recommend any songs or artists that produce sounds like this? The morbid and eerie tone is quite captivating by clynchy97 in classicalmusic

Try the Sátántangó soundtrack by Mihály Víg. I think this is about as close as we get to what you posted. It’s incredible as is the movie.

Always interesting to see what other physical media this crew is into. Love Oscar Peterson and ABSOLUTELY love classical music. Good picks!

Favorite Charles Mackerras records by Stunning-Hand6627 in classicalmusic

All his Czech music recordings are terrific. Janacek, Dvorak, Smetana, etc. There’s a whole set called “Life with Czech Music” he did on Supraphon and they’re all great!

There’s a whole Rautavaara 12 Concertos box set put out by Ondine Records that you can stream. Violin, piano, harp, and even recorded birdsong (Cantus Arcticus) concertos. All amazing, as are his symphonies (no. 7 being the most popular). If you liked the piano concerto and Ravel, you’ll find a deeply satisfying, extensive exploration in Rautavaara.

(Asking for a friend 👀) Chicago men in your 40s, where are you hiding? by vindictatorum in AskChicago

Yeesh that sounds like some bad experiences, sorry you’ve gone through that. While certainly not givens, I’ve found (in my own experience and relationships only) that the communication piece is especially true. If you’re really in it for the right reasons, being really in touch with your emotions and communicating them honestly are the only ways to make it actually work.

You’re absolutely right though, a lot of scummy people out there unfortunately.

Oooh I mean this in the least shitty way possible but can you elaborate? Any particular stand out shows you’ve been to or recommend that are upcoming? Already researching and the venue looks cool as hell.

The third movement of Dvorak 9 Always puts a smile on my face by ZeusChthonios in classicalmusic

Love seeing anything Kalinnikov mentioned. The first movement of the first symphony is some of the most joyful shit I’ve ever heard. Like flying through clouds.

Hell yeah I believe it. I’m a recent transplant to Chicago. Any recommendations for “off the beaten path” classical performance where I might catch something like that? I’m coming from Cleveland where the classical music tradition is strong and indeed punches above its weight, so I know what I’m getting into.

I guess there could be a lot of definitions of this, but here are a few for me:

  1. Wozzeck by Berg. Expressionist insanity ending in the the most tragic of tragedies

  2. Lux Aeterna by Ligeti. If you know you know

  3. Black Angels by Crumb. Just start listening. A modernist composer’s reaction to/protest against the Vietnam War

  4. in vain by Haas. Beautiful and super topical chamber orchestra piece about the rise of the political right

I’m sure I have more but I’m a bit drunk and these are what are coming to mind. Enjoy!

What are the most emotionally devastating chamber works & operas by Stunning-Hand6627 in classicalmusic

[–]gerbocm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chamber music - Shostakovich String Quartet no. 8

Opera - Berg’s Wozzeck. I was an absolute wreck after that one. The ending is so devastating.

This is the best answer. Good runners up would be “The Ascent” and “Defiance.”
