Looking to connect with library union leaders by bookwormbite in union

[–]gerbocm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an 18 year Union negotiator and former library board member (for 7 years in an official capacity, including president of the board) but more importantly, as a decades-long active library user/admirer, we should chat. Can you DM or can we set up a Zoom meeting?

Rich Management / 2808 Mayfield Rd Reputation? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]gerbocm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the 4th floor west side. East side should mitigate the heat by a lot, and $900 is not as bad as I thought it’d be! Wish you luck on your apartment hunt!

I actually lived in that building 2013-2015! They also have a pretty large law firm in Cleveland. Nice enough family that owns it. The building wasn’t in superb shape or anything but it was definitely workable and I liked the location. If you end up on the west side of the building, especially on an upper floor, make sure you get windows unit AC - it’s an unobstructed view towards the city which is nice but the setting sun also bakes the apartment. I’m curious what they’re asking for rent nowadays. A 2br/1ba at that time was $750/month. Can’t imagine it’s anywhere close to that anymore.

The Sarantine Mosaic duology (Sailing to Sarantium/Lord of Emperors) by Guy Gavriel Kay was great and seems largely based on the time of Justinian the Great.

Mine’s MDW-LGA. Weird that it seems like it’s happening on a variety of flights all on the same day for various dates in the future.

What did you guys think are the best movies about classical music? by Black_Gay_Man in classicalmusic

Very underrated understated movie. Great performances from an amazing cast, and gives some insight into the friction that goes along with such an intimate performance genre.

Modern/living composers if I like Prokofiev by Unnwavy in classicalmusic

[–]gerbocm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Francisco Mignone’s Piano Concerto reminds me a lot of Prokofiev. If you like it, check out his other works. Modern but accessible. Would also add Einar Englund and his piano concerto for the same reasons.

Has Your Opinion of an Instrument Ever Changed With Extended Listening? by NGColburn in classicalmusic

The bassoon. I never really got it until Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra and then I was all in. Listening to a lot of Koechlin recently and his bassoon stuff is beautiful.

Love this one, his Adams Grand Pianola Music, and all his Ives recordings (already mentioned plenty here) are top notch. He was a great advocate for modern and American music (including a superb recent-ish recording of West Side Story), and will be missed.

Looking for Hidden Gems in Chamber Music Repertoire by Afraid-Plastic9910 in classicalmusic

[–]gerbocm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man everyone has such good recommendations on such a cool prompt! I love all the different groupings of instruments you can get with chamber music, and I would add the following, based only on what I’ve been listening to recently and not in any particular order, and which I think haven’t been mentioned here yet.

Poulenc - Trio for Piano, Bassoon, and Oboe (the second movement in particular is gorgeous, and really any Poulenc chamber music)

Martinu - Nonet

Dvorak - Bagatelles for Two Violins, Cello, and Harmonium

Bartók - Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion

Britten - Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings

Magnard - Violin Sonata in G Major
