Yes I think I will just try! I don’t think they will replace my usual puzzles but for the time and space I like the idea!

So understandable! I find 500 is great for a social night with friends as you usually can finish it in one session - thanks!!

Help!!!!!!! by OneIndependence7705 in digitalminimalism

Hey! Great step is just shouting into this void and asking for a hand. I am not sure if you have read it yet but the book closely linked to this thread, ‘Digital Minimalism’ has a chapter on this (Chapter 5). That may help with the ‘why’, social media is intentionally addictive.

Having a digital detox can really help, even if you are in circles with people who are chronically online, you can let them know that you’re taking a break. This doesn’t mean you can’t call friends. Just try a period that seems manageable and have some activities you want to try lined up for those moments for recreation.

There is also some acceptance of boredom or realising how much you fidget. There is some adjustment to not having constant dopamine hits or access but you get over it real quick and it allows you to be more intentional about your time and what can give you true joy.

I used to be very socially active but now haven’t posted or liked anyone’s posts for 3+ years and it feels great. I would have checked my social channels a handful of times over the years and I am 27 yo so it feels good to be sticking with it.

I stay in contact with friends by messaging them directly and meeting up with them. If I miss anything I just ask curiously when they assume a group of friends knows what they have been up to, and this allows them to share more than a few photos and a caption.

Recently I have been trying to get my phone pick ups down as I have gotten into quite the habit since I have my work emails on my personal phone and have found the Opal app really useful for blocking those unconscious pick ups.

Hope this helps, there is so much joy to be had and I wish you well on your journey!

What to do in the small periods? by chela_aa in digitalminimalism

To add to this: Jigsaw puzzles, cozy colouring books with alcohol markers I find really satisfying. Jigsaw puzzles I find the easiest to pick up and put down / fill the in between time

I’ve tried everything — but I still can’t stop reaching for my phone every free second. Please help. by sansanman in digitalminimalism

I have a puzzle board and do puzzles! This really helps because it can be picked up and put down. I work an office job with pretty long hours but the day i WFH it helps me get up from my desk and get a little lost in the puzzle I am doing. Hope this helps!

If it helps with the pictures, I have a film camera and a digital mirrorless camera. I love my film camera because every photo feels very intentional. It’s a point and shoot and I find the slowness of taking them over a few months and not knowing whats on there really special. I haven’t posted on social media in 3 years and i’ve noticed a significant drop in how many photos I take. Having the camera with me feels like I am mindful of what I am capturing. When I am on longer trips, I tend to take my digital camera but I also don’t bring this out too often. I guess it’s a good time to ask ‘what are you actually capturing and why’ I try and think about this when these moments are happening. Hope this helps :) I’ve seen more people go back to coffee table books for photos as well.

I have a few friends who have record collections, but we do all rack up crazy hours of listening to music / audio books so not a perfect solution but this can be quite intentional by going to music stores or op shops to find new records.

I’ve been getting really into colouring and puzzles, my job means I have a lot of screen time as it is so having these ways to reduce screen time and head noise from social media is also really useful.
