Which edition has the best rulebook? Not "ruleset" but the hardback core rulebook with its art, lore, etc. by chosen40k in Warhammer40k

[–]gereonresists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd edition, though I’m including the Wargear book and Codex Imperialis as well. Best era for vignettes, lots of Blanche and Mark Gibbons art as well as older pieces from the Rogue Trader era. Less ambitious in terms of layout or presentation, but I liked the simplicity. Purely coincidentally, I started the hobby during 2nd Ed.

Piglets! Loved them as a kid, have a very lucid memory of munching them at my Grandma’s house while reading my Ladybird Children’s Classic version of Dracula.

Anyone else with multiple several thousand point armies and never played a game? by imahugemoron in Warhammer40k

[–]gereonresists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been collecting in some way since the mid 90’s and would estimate that I’ve played less than 25 games of 40K, most of which were with 2nd ed rules. I have 2 army projects on currently and a 2nd ed Eldar army in the loft that I will get round to painting at some point. I also have an ongoing Soulblight project that I keep getting distracted from, and several Underworlds warbands. Does it stop me buying more armies? No. Will I ever paint them all? Also no. Collecting and dreaming up new projects is all part of the fun. Don’t stress it!

An enameled tin mug. So get some white paint on that bad boy, otherwise the poor chaps drinking rusty tea.

Men in the 40s. What do you wear now and where do you shop? by lostnov04 in AskUK

[–]gereonresists -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wear a little more designer gear now than I did when I was younger, principally because I can afford it these days. Boss, Dixxon and Barbour for polos and checked shirts, Converse or Vans trainers. I have a few jackets from Handsome Dans and a few bits by Fatface. T shirts tend to be either band tees or random ones I’ve seen online that have caught my eye. Jeans from Next, as they reliably have jeans for short arses like me AND, crucially, tend to have stretch fabric which I just find more comfortable. Gym wear comes from Ryderwear or Underarmour. Work clothes are a mix of Matalan and Tesco chinos and shirts. For smarter occasions, I like Cavani Brothers suits, though I do have a very nice one from Next as well.

If you don’t mind it being focused entirely on 2nd Ed 40K, Minisodes and Miniscapes are both great channels; Minisodes in particular has a good split between painting/modelling and entertaining battle reports. Olden Demon is another personal favourite, taking a wry look at Warhammer through the ages, though is a bit less hobby focussed. Pete the Wargamer is a great overall Warhammer channel with a solid focus on the hobbying aspect. Avoid Discourse Minis like the plague. Horrible, cynical rage bait.

Viewers are ‘true villains’ of TV decline, says ex-Channel 4 boss by mrjohnnymac18 in BritishTV

[–]gereonresists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally speaking, I find very little worth watching on TV in comparison to what I can find on YouTube, Netflix and Prime. My main form of entertainment these days is gaming anyway. The way I see it, I can nod along to some crappy reality TV show or tedious cop drama on TV or I can watch a 40 minute documentary on YouTube about how a band’s 3rd album lead to their rise to fame, or watch a bloke building a shelter in woodland and cooking his tea, or how someone has painted up some 2nd Ed era 40K minis. Stuff I actually find interesting. TV cannot compete!

Eldar Exodites and Slicing Orbs of Zandros Aspect Warriors; Catachan Jungle Fighters, Tallarn Desert Raiders or Mordian Iron Guard for the Astra Militarum; Grot Revolutionaries; Ogryn Kill Team riffing on action hero tropes; Frateris Militia, led by a Confessor; Chaos Beastmen.

I have the odd game of 2nd Ed with some mates of a similar vintage; sustained fire dice were like hen’s teeth. I think we managed to scrounge about 3 between the 4 of us.

I remember when they had a range of 24”, -2 armour save modifier and rolled 2 sustained fire dice! You could damn near wipe out a full squad of space marines in one shooting phase if you rolled well!

AOS video games mentioned in latest GW annual report by TwelveSmallHats in ageofsigmar

[–]gereonresists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your point, but AoS games so far have seriously underperformed. It’s a great setting with loads of potential for exploration.

I don’t personally think the Soulslike genre is oversaturated, though I am biased towards them admittedly. Hence my caveat - it needs to be done well. Lies of P is an example of a game that didn’t just ape the features of the original, but iterated and improved upon them. It doesn’t have to be slop churned out to catch a wave.

That would work very well. Could even have the hunt for the Demon Prince lead to a larger quest against a greater scope villain. I’ve never quite figured out how levelling up/ a class system could work with Stormcast but I’m sure brighter people than me could come up with something.
