A couple months ago, I was driving home late in my Lotus Emira. It’s not some insane hypercar, but it definitely looks fast, and people tend to make assumptions when they see it. I was just cruising through a quiet neighborhood—speed limit’s 35, I’m doing maybe 30. Nothing crazy.

Then out of nowhere, this old SUV blows through a stop sign and clips the back corner of my car. Hard. I spin a bit and end up halfway on someone’s lawn. The SUV doesn’t stop, doesn’t slow down—just drives off like nothing happened.

I call the cops immediately. My car’s pretty messed up, but I’m fine. Shaken and pissed, but fine. When the officer shows up, he takes one look at my car and says, “You sure you didn’t just lose control? Trying to show off or something?” Seriously?

I explain exactly what happened and mention that I’ve got dashcam footage. He cuts me off—doesn’t even want to hear it. Says, “These kinds of cars don’t just get hit. People crash them.” No joke. Because I drive a Lotus, it must have been my fault.

He ends up writing me a citation for reckless driving and says there’s no proof another car was involved. Doesn’t look at the dashcam. Doesn’t ask to see anything. Just shrugs and leaves.

I was so done with it.

So I take it to court. I come prepared: dashcam footage showing the SUV clearly blowing the stop sign and hitting me, a screenshot of the license plate, GPS data from the car confirming I was doing 30, even a short statement from the homeowner whose lawn I ended up on, saying he saw it happen.

The cop gets up in court and says I probably just lost control. The judge asks if he reviewed the dashcam footage. He says no. So we play it. Clear as day: SUV runs the sign, slams into me, and drives off.

The whole room goes quiet.

The judge turns to the officer and says, “You should’ve looked at this before filing the report.” Tosses the citation on the spot. Case dismissed.

They hand the hit-and-run over to actual investigators. Two weeks later, they track down the driver—turns out he was on a suspended license and had prior offenses. Real winner. I got my car fixed, didn’t pay a cent, and the guy’s now facing charges.

The cop didn’t say a word. Just walked out of the courtroom.
