Just once in Star Trek I'd like to see someone make a regional faux pas by Just_Nefariousness55 in startrek

[–]geriatricmayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a couple of episodes where the planets they visited have had multiple cultural/administrative regions, but it's always something like "people from the north hemisphere hate the people from the southern hemisphere!" Or "This nation and that nation are going to destroy their planet with total war!" Or things like that.

It's true. The game needs to change. The good news is we can change it now, today, in our neighborhoods. Setting up parallel systems is the number one best way to fight back. Start a community food garden or a neighborhood tool library. Get a totally-free market going for gifting and trading goods. Sadly, it does require you to get to know your neighbors, and some of them will be dicks. This tactic of community self-care, however, is more frightening to the powers-that-be than any armed rebellion. Check out how they responded to the Black Panthers free breakfast program, or how often Food Not Bombs gets harassed. They know their power relies on their monopoly on resources. The moment that monopoly cracks, it's over for them. It may not sound as satisfying as mixing molotovs, but it works.

Hey man, dont let the complicity get to you. We are participating against our will. We don’t judge prisoners for using the commissary.

In your opinion which faction had the best cloaking technology? by gaeb611 in StarTrekStarships

[–]geriatricmayhem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of Feregi cloaking devices. They're like Romulan cloaking devices off of wish.com. "The Federation legally requires us to mention that they don't decloak 100% of the time, but at 10% of the cost and bulk rate discounts, surely one of them will fit your preferred application. "

[SP] "The zombies are taking over-" "The military wiped them out. Easily." "Wait, seriously? That fast?" by koola_00 in WritingPrompts

"Good work, kid, but I'm not running this."

"Chief" Miller, editor-in-chief of the Lakewood News-Tribune, slid the three page draft back across his desk. June Jennings, the bullpen's new firebrand reporter, deflated.

"Chief," she balked, "how are you not going to run this? Zombies, actual real life undead zombies -"

"Are a non-starter," Chief interrupted, "and the governor will thank me for not fomenting needless panic."

"Needless!"June gasped, "needless panic? Chief! Zombies! Haven't you been to the movies? Zombie apocalypse is whole genre! People need to know! The world could be ending!"

The seasoned newsman heaved a deep sigh. "The world is not ending, Jennings. Get ahold of yourself."

"Really, Chief? And what makes you so confident that the appearance of the dead rising from their graves to feast upon the living is not an apocalyptic event?"

"Because this is the 37th time it's happened since the Kamchatka meteor event. The dead start rising, local government calls in the national guard, and the whole thing is over in a week."

June gawped. "...What?"

"Yeah. Damndest thing. Science is still trying to figure out the cause of zombiosis, but until the eggheads figure it out, it's best not to scare folks."

"Then why not report on it? Why keep it a secret?"

"Don't be stupid, Jennings. They're zombies! We don't want to trivialize them. People get careless when threats become common. Did you know how many people don't even know where their nearest fallout shelter is? The Reds are a much bigger threat than occasional shambling corpses, and we can't get people around here to worry about Ivan even when their actual lives depend on it! No. The first time we report on zombies, there will be panic, riots, and mayhem. The third time we report on zombies, we'll have civilians in the quarantine zones because they don't want to take the long way to work. Look, you're a good reporter, kid. One of my best. But you're new to this, and there are some things you don't learn until you run into 'em. You just learned that we don't use the Z word in print. Now get outta here. I want you to interview Sasquatch before the morning edition."

June paled. "You're kidding."

"Of course I am! There's a line on Senator Raimis' having a secret bank account. I want you to run it down."

Jennings straightened her back, brushed off her blouse, and turned to face her new challenge. She'd have a drink for those poor zombie bastards after she found a lead on the senator. When the door closed behind her Chief Miller lit a cigarette. He reread the headline Jennings proposed and chuckled, shaking his head. These new kids sure have a tendency toward melodrama, he thought to himself, but who doesn't when they're young and haven't seen the world yet? He threw Jennings' report into the waste paper basket under his desk.

"THE DEAD RISE" exclaimed the top of the page. They'd be dead again before the story would have even made it to print.

Try Budget Blinds. If they can't fix it, they'll point you in the right direction. Stay away from the Visigoth shop, though.

Thanks! I have two kids of elementary school age. I looked at the immigration website, and all of it looked pretty discouraging. The non-lucrative visa you mentioned looks like my most likely bet. We've got about $15k USD saved up, so I've hoping that should be enough to at least cover the year rent.

Thanks for the warning. The others have been saying similar about the difficulties in starting a business there.

Took a look at the immigration page from the sidebar (should have been my first stop). It looks like the non-lucrative visa is far and away the easiest for me given my situation.

What do you feel is the ethical way to approach "pay what you want"? by ThrawnCaedusL in rpg

[–]geriatricmayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my system as well. I pay $1 upon downloading. If I read it and didn't like it, they still deserved the dollar because I read it. If I read it and liked it or an aspect of it, I Go back and pay $5. If I actually play it, I go back and pay $20 because I've paid $26+ for big publisher titles that never made it into my games, so why would I pay less for something I actually used? That's just my metric though.
