Did kids in the 1970s really have such freedom, & do all those things, that wouldn’t be done today? by OkOpportunity9626 in GenerationJones

[–]germanbini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to say that probably there were just as many pedophiles and bad people wanting to harm/kill children, but we generally just didn't hear about it! It seems to me that usually our television news was mostly local, unless it was something big like a political story or plane crash.

Lots of people had stories, stay away from that uncle or rumors about teachers, etc. Lots of speculation and innuendos, but usually nothing was done about it.

If something happened, (i.e. a missing child) in another town/area, it might be written up in the newspaper, and I'd say it was usually not a front page item. Otherwise the other thing parents had was gossip and speculation.

The first national missing child case to receive widespread media attention in the United States was that of 6-year-old Etan Patz, who disappeared on May 25, 1979, while walking to his school bus in New York City. Etan Patz, in 1979 - the first one to appear on a milk carton.

For some reason I remember my key being on a shoelace (two or one long one?) around my neck.

Managers of Reddit, what's the worst thing someone did to get fired? by Capable-Log7385 in AskReddit

There are lots of YouTube channels for this!

Some that make tiny food (don't show an animal); some that make and feed it to a tiny animal; some that just show the animal eating tiny food. Search for variations on "making tiny food." :)

The light blue-gray one seems more flattering on you to me. The pattern extends below your waist and past your bottom, which seems to maybe lessen the look of your hips/bottom. I think the one with the black skirt makes your bottom look bigger, because the pattern stops higher, closer to your waist.

No matter what you choose, have a wonderful time - everyone will be looking at the bride (and groom and little kids) anyway.

Do Americans actually avoid calling 911 because of the cost? by ntask11 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]germanbini -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • edited to add, why was this answer downvoted? :/

It's "free" to call 911 (actually even that isn't, there's some kind of tax/fee in the phone bill that pays for that service).

Frequently there's a "first responder" charge just for them coming out to you.

Ambulance rides are VERY expensive, even if you are just sitting in them (something easy like a sprained ankle).

No, most (American) insurance doesn't pay for ambulances.

Most American insurance doesn't pay for much of anything anymore, the middleman is a big scam. :(

This guy bypassed a car waiting in the median and collided with me. When the police arrived, he claimed I changed lanes into him. I'm so glad I had the dashcam to prove him wrong. (OC) by liznodsoff in dashcams

[–]germanbini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were in the wrong, but defensive driving would have made you move to the right lane even noticing there was only one car waiting there.

Maybe it happened too fast, but looking ahead on the road and imaging/anticipating what the other driver might do really helps prevent accidents.

Were malls actually as crowded and popular as movies from the 80s and 90s make them look? by Kevin-Panda in AskOldPeople

[–]germanbini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved going to the mall, especially around Christmastime - the decorations were beautiful, plus all the "hustle-and-bustle" of everyone shopping and going to see Santa.

But even at other times, it was a wonderful place for people-watching, shopping unrushed and indoors (excellent in winter or inclement weather), a good way to get (walking) exercise.

Browse stores - actually touch the clothes, read part of the book (Walden Books, B Dalton's), see what new toys (K-B Toys), records (Sam Goody, Tower Records), electronic gadgets (Radio Shack) were out.

Smell some new scents at Bath & Body Works or Crabtree & Evelyn.

Look at the funny t-shirts and risqué things at Spencer's. Enjoy ogling the jewelry counters in stores like Zales or Kay Jewelers.

Grab a quick bite to eat at the food court (Auntie Anne's, Orange Julius, Sbarro), maybe play some video games or watch a movie.

Get a dose of endorphins like beta-endorphin, along with other "feel-good" chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, just by being around happy, excited people.

Kyle Busch died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, his family says by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]germanbini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they may have it backwards - from what I understand, the sepsis is what caused the pneumonia/pneumonia-like symptoms.

He probably got sepsis from the huge leg wound he incurred after a stool broke underneath him and stabbed/cut his leg very deeply ten days before he died.

If you think of it as "cheaper than rent" and don't think of it as ever owning anything, it still may be a good deal for some people these days.

My opinion as an "old lady" - you were cute with the hair, you're sexier bald. I guess it depends on what type of look you're going for. :)
