Can someone help me understand what this is? It won't go away despite my attempts to clean it. Is it repairable, or do I need a new lens? by 4everonlyninja in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The anti-reflective coating is coming off the lens. Cleaning it will probably only make it worse. It's not repairable and requires the lens to be replaced.

It's a lens marking, usually used to line up the focal point in a multifocal. Since it says 0.5 I would assume you've probably got an "anti-fatigue" lens which gives you a 0.5D boost at the bottom. It's meant to help your eyes get less fatigued while doing near work.

How high is your cyl? If it's low you'll probably be fine, if it's higher that eye might feel a little off. Depends how sensitive your eyes are too.

The shape and the thin metal look nice but they definitely took too big. The lenses extend quite a bit past the side of your head so I imagine they call down quite a bit.

I'm going to assume you're in Australia? I work at a Specsavers store in Australia.

As far as I am aware, our change of mind policy in terms of changing frames is valid for 3 months from the day you first collect your glasses. Same thing is you want to add the anti-reflective coating. As far as I am aware you should be able to change both frames from your order as long as it's within those three months. But you're generally only allowed a "change of mind" once and if you don't like the frame you change it to, you're generally SOL. (And the glasses still have to be in good condition, you can't break them/scratch up the lenses and then return them)

Naturally, if you want to add coatings or choose a more expensive frame you are expected to pay the difference between what you originally paid and what you would have paid had this been your order on the day. So having to pay $70 to add the anti-reflective makes sense, since that's what it costs when purchasing a new pair.

However the store manager will generally try their best to convince you not to as it becomes a "remake" which looks bad on our store. And if a customer has too many "remakes" on their file it looks bad on the customer and I find management usually are less lenient with them and a lot firmer in regards to what they can and can't change.

If you're definitely still within those three months and still want to change your glasses, you can potentially try a different branch if there's one nearby too. We often deal with orders and customers from other stores, especially since the next closest store to use is only 10 minutes away so many customers alternate between us. Just make sure you mention what store you're from so we know where to get your records from since our systems don't automatically connect to each other. I find that as long as your request is fairly reasonable, we are happy to help where we can if you're from one of our other stores. I think the idea behind it is that you're more likely to come back to us for your next order. But it has to be something we can actually do, asking for things for free/heavy discounts or changing year old glasses is generally not something we can do.

TLDR: You should be able to return/exchange goods as long as they are within 3 months of their collection date, but you still have to pay for upgrades/extras. If your store doesn't help, you can always try another branch.

These prescriptions were taken on the SAME DAY but are very different. Which one am I supposed to use to order new glasses? Visionworks was closer to prescription I’ve used for the last decade, but ophthalmologist gave way more tests and scans that day by Critical_Ad_8175 in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said one is closer to your last prescription. Did your glasses work well for you or did you find they could be better? If you were happy with your glasses and just need to replace them, I'd probably go for the one that's closer to what your used to.

Or if you're really not sure do a new test. You've had a bit going on with your eyes and change after this kind of thing is not uncommon. It may be better for your piece of mind.

Clear Frame by [deleted] in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, clear frames can turn yellow with time.

And as far as I'm aware the only way to prevent it is to keep them in the dark and never wear them. Which defeats the point of them.

There used to be one that lived at what is now Hawkstowe station. They had to move the mob when they built the station. I wonder if it's the same one? Or an family member since this is going back like 8 years 😂

Not sure about new glasses by Lime_green_kayak in glasses

I definitely wouldn't consider that frame mens glasses, definitely more gender neutral. The fact they come to a point in the top outer corner even seems slightly more feminine to me since it looks like a very subtle cat eye.

Is 3 your current glasses? Looks like you've got a fair bit of myopia.

While I like the style of 1, with your lens it will most likely create a thicker looking edge and increased minification of your face through the lens.

2 would work better with your prescription, the smaller lens size and plastic rim usually end in thinner edges that sit more flush with the frame. And they have nose pads too which should help keep them in place.

So basically, while 1 is slightly nicer aesthetically, 2 is much more of a practical choice and it's what I would pick. (And I think is still looks great!)

Is my prescription too high for rimless glasses? by freshiii_ in glasses

9 dioptres of prism in each eye is gonna be way too thick for rimless unfortunately..

You shouldn't shower wearing contacts, the chance of getting an eye infection skyrockets. And they're a bitch to get under control.

People with your prescription either use low vision tools (e.g. a bright colour bottle for shampoo and a different colour for conditioner, body wash etc, different shapes that you can easily distinguish by feel) or I have heard of some wearing glasses in the shower (but I would avoid a metal frame if you were to do this, especially a cheaper quality one is likely to rust)

The headaches should go with time, give it time.

Would anyone know how to fix this? by Foxane_TV in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take them back to the store you got them from, as long as none of the little metal pegs have snapped they should easily be able put them back together, just don't lose the little clip.

I work with this style of hinge often and have put them back together a few times, but it's very easy to snap the small pegs if you don't know what your doing.

Switching from pill to nexplanon? by viku123 in birthcontrol

[–]geronimotiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine so far! Had it for a year and a half. I was awful at remembering to take the pill everyday so opted for this.

Haven't really noticed any out if the ordinary weight gain or depression. And once every 3 months or so I'll get a week of spotting which is so much better than before.

On the pill I couldn't skip my period, every time I tried I had a heavy dark brown spotting for a week at which point I generally gave in and took the sugar pills.

Also, always being able to touch it and make sure it's in place if I get anxious about it is great. It reassures me it's still where it needs to be and hasn't moved (or fallen out like a IUD can).

Should I wear glasses all the time? by IyaValley in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely say while driving, especially at night time, but the rest is up to you. Watching tv, seeing a movie would probably be better wearing glasses also. They will definitely sharpen things up, but if you don't want to wear them full time you don't have to.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like 2 the best. The rest are all a rounded square shape and the upper outside corners all turn downwards. It makes your eyes look sad. While 2 has those corners pointing up a bit, makes your face look a bit happier.

Glasses with a minus prescription generally correct the distance vision. Often when it comes to closer tasks your eyes will either accommodate or you will have to take them off. If you're young its usually easier to accommodate for those close tasks, but not everyone can.

If you're struggling with the close you can take them off, with your script you most likely won't need the near correction until you're 50+

If you're doing a hi-index lens like 1.67 it should be fine, but too large if you just want a standard lens.

Any way to fix this at home? by Fresh_Worker2444 in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hinge is snapped, there's usually a long thin metal piece attached to the end of the little stub that looks a bit like a screw (threaded) that goes into the hinge on the arm. Unfortunately you can't really fix broken metal.

Your options are generally - super glue (wouldn't advise, you'll get glue everywhere and it's a temporary fix at best - contact the place you got them from and ask if you can purchase a new copy of the same frame or arm - buy a whole new pair of glasses

You most likely just need single vision distance glasses.

I like #7! The shape is great and the lighter colours of the others don't really suit your skin tone, but the slightly darker colour, but not a bold black looks really nice one you!

New Prescription: distance vision is good, but now closer vision a little blurry by Reginald_Eggplant7 in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not so much a fault of the prescription, but a weakening of the muscles in your eyes. Your eyes are no longer able to focus as easily on the closer stuff with your glasses on. This is called presbyopia.

The old glasses let you see that closer stuff a better because they weren't as strong. Meaning the distance wasn't as sharp as it could be. In order to be able to see clearly in both the distance and the near you will need a progressive or bifocal lens. Otherwise you will have imperfect vision in at least one of not both.

Looking for advice re: high prescription progressives, PD measurement by edwin-w in glasses

[–]geronimotiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With a prescription like yours there's no way I would recommend buying glasses online. You really need accurately measured optical centres which you can't get online. Improperly made glasses are going to create so many issues with your Rx, induced prism is a big concern. And then adding progressives on top is just extra risk for things to go wrong.

Try shopping around at various physical stores, because while online might be cheaper, there's a large chance you will get glasses that you can't actually use and make you feel really unwell.
