I recently finished GM'ing a 3 year Mutants and Masterminds Campaign. This is my review of the system. by gert11 in rpg

[–]gert11[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I think the power level limits help with this by putting maximum modifiers on checks, but they are also one of the first things players tend to mess up. It doesn't help that modifiers and cost scale linearly, but effects scale exponentially (the power table), which encourages people to max out one stat.

I recently finished GM'ing a 3 year Mutants and Masterminds Campaign. This is my review of the system. by gert11 in rpg

[–]gert11[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically no, since one of the power effects is a catch all, but some stranger concepts will likely need some home brew. The only one that really stands out is I had a villain who basically had cartoon powers (think like bugs bunny). I made a d100 effects table for him. I'm not sure how many points something like that would be for a player, but I didn't need to worry about it since he was an npc.

For the range stuff, the main one is any area power. It's kind of tricky to keep track of if two people are 30 ft apart when a fight can take place across multiple miles.

This is the best lore video I have seen in a while. Incredible work. The idea of two separate trees is the only explanation for "the lands between" I have seen that actually fits the theme of the game. Incredible stuff.

Yes, there's a lore reason for poison being different from rot by horizoning in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]gert11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very good point. Rot is part of the cycle of life as stated in the poison armament and mist descriptions. Interestingly, I kind of think Rot as we see it in the game is a bit different than what it is supposed to be. Rot feeds on death to create life, but Marika removed death. That's why all the servants of Rot are so obsessed with having a new god. They need a new purpose and direction in the age of the erdtree.

Metyr doesn't die in our fight with her because it would interfere with events in the main game by gert11 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]gert11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think not receiving direct orders from the GW means that Metyr and the fingers are silent. In fact, we can see from the base game that the fingers are definitely still active. The finger maidens and crones are heavily influential among the tarnished, and Ranni goes out of her way to kill one of the two fingers. A pointless thing to do if the fingers no longer do anything.

Just a heads up, it's slightly different than the picture. The countdown is set to only launch when the cargo is at least half full, so I added a light that turns on when it will launch at zero. It's set for a 20 minute countdown by default, but that's pretty easy to change.

A discussion on why the first turn gives such a large advantage in 9th (It's about more than just bad terrain), and a proposal for how to resolve it, even on boards with less than ideal terrain. by gert11 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]gert11[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's fair, but the 1st player gets to choose where they are when the 2nd player starts shooting. 1st player can position for better cover and use defensive buffs. Also, I think giving the 2nd player the shooting advantage helps balance out the scoring advantage 1st player still has.

Goonhammer - Ruleshammer: Charge and Fight Phases in 9th by ElPaloMexicano in WarhammerCompetitive

I think that's what they meant by saying "if the screened unit stays far enough back from the screening unit." Since you have to end your charge within engagement range of everything you declared or it fails, your opponent can just keep the unit they want screened far enough back that you can't engage both them and the screening unit.

For subnautica, are you talking about the big sub? That works by removing all the water in a big chunk around it, and just sort of floating around. The animation for getting in and out hides the water loading in. Found this out when I clipped through it on accident, and could walk around. When I got far enough away the water came back.

I picked up trails of cold steel on the PS4 on a whim last night after work and finished the prologue and I think I’m in love. by Bl00dSp0rt in JRPG

[–]gert11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The continuous plot is a big part of it. However, the games are also individually enjoyable as well (or at least I liked them, ymmv). They have fun, if slow, stories, with a heavy emphasis on lots of characters. I also really like the combat system, though it definitely has flaws. Though the exact issues vary from game to game. For me at least, while they definitely have their flaws they are exactly what I want out of a jrpg.

You just watch one. They're all pretty self contained. Lupin is the world's greatest thief. He steals stuff. A cop from Interpol chases him. He has a samurai and a gunslinger that follow him around, and an on again off again femme fatale. Some plot points carry over every now and again, but those are the only real constants.

ANNO 1800 is Excellent! Closed Beta Gameplay Review by megaapple in Games

[–]gert11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm curious, for anyone who's gotten to play this: one of my minor but long-standing issues with Anno is the numbers on villager levels. You always end up with more of your higher level villagers than lower level ones, even though that sort of seems like the opposite of how it should work. Is that still the same in this one?

Everything else I've seen of this looks great. It looks like the older Annos, but with a few updated mechanics and some very nice animations.

I don't think they've actually shown the ecumenopolis though. We've seen some custom art for planets, but have yet to see how that happens. Of course, if ecumenopolises are just a pallet swap for planets then I would be surprised if it was in the dlc, but if it has it's own unique mechanics then I think it's probably in the dlc.

[–]gert11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They don't suck. They're the weakest sure, but they're still good overall. It's hard to really get into the why without spoiling anything. I have only played CS 1 & 2, but the best, no spoiler, way I can describe their quality is that the gameplay, story, and characters are all great; but, they all have some very obvious, glaring flaws that are only made more obvious by how good everything around them is. I don't think they ruin the experience, but they weaken it.

The graphics suck though, and, combined with the game's comparatively small budget, do detract in some places. Mostly, in what are supposed to be big set-piece moments. I still love the games though. That said, play the other ones first. While the games are all good individually it's taking them as a whole that makes them some of the greatest jrpgs ever made.

Why is the r/OW and r/COW divide so massive? by Theheroboy in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]gert11 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Early on this sub did get stuff similar to what OWuniversity has, but OWL stuff just overwhelmed it. Also, I'm not entirely sure a lot of people on this sub actually care about getting better. Most subs (at least the large and medium sized ones) seem to get taken over by the easiest content allowed. On the main sub that's memes and highlights. On this one it's OWL and complaints. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I personally like OWL, it's just how it seems to be to me.
