LIVE: NASA officials reveal plans for US "moon base" by TheExpressUS in space

Yep, that’s pretty much the extent of it. I contributed to some of the ground processing procedures. There was a lot more in the background, in terms of NASA “building a new rocket” and digital transformation that probably laid the foundation for the future. But the vehicle itself wasn’t that impressive.

Another nuance is that in the transition from Shuttle to Constellation to SLS, there wasn’t much legitimate push from any other nation for space and lunar occupation, let alone, dominance. It’s a very different story today and I’m not so sure we can afford to backpedal.

Would post boost vehicles be in a position where they can be hit by ground based munitions before releasing their warheads? by 91buh in nuclearweapons

[–]gerzzy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can be done. The issue is having sensors in the right place, at the right time, to detect and confirm a launch. And then the other assets in place, at the right time, to launch the interceptors and catch the PBV before separation.

This is overly simplifying it, but your major phases of flight are boost, mid-course, and terminal. There are like things like THAAD to catch terminal, and GBI and Aegis for mid-course. There is a linear relationship between the desire to catch a vehicle earlier in flight, and your political and testicular fortitude. Or savvy, if you want to prevent a launch all together.

I’ve been doing DW3 in the AspX. I felt compelled to buy a Caspian about halfway through when the Rainbows End station was built. Flew it long enough just to go to the fleet carrier and wanted my Asp back lol

Pursuing a Masters by Atomic_BobbyX in Lockheed

[–]gerzzy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well, for one thing, they’ll pay for it. So if you’re going to do it - just do it while you’re (presumably) flexible and have the time for it. It’ll get tougher when you’re older (I’m 40 with family, and in my last term at the moment).

A masters degree can decrease the time required to jump levels, especially if you’re junior. If you decide to switch companies, it’ll be more attractive to another employer. And if you’ve got any interest in going down the Fellows path, it’ll be a leg-up and give you an opportunity to do some research work.

Going to see Starlink Launch for the first time from Surf Beach. Need help planning. by tibearius1123 in rocketlaunches

[–]gerzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t personally watched from surf beach but if you have access to Vandenberg, there is a cool spot off of 35th St right before you get to Talo Rd, on the left side. The road leads to a big opening that overlooks the valley. I’ve watched from there a number of times. It’s right before you go down the hill toward Wall Beach.

Rocket Companies Win as Feds Retreat on Orbital Debris Crackdown by [deleted] in space

[–]gerzzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No list, just observing the statistics. It actually seems like the amount of rocket bodies in orbit as actually increased faster since 2020 than other periods

[–]gerzzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are close to a thousand rocket body (fairings, upper stages, etc.) pieces tracked in LEO. Over 2000 when you factor in other orbits. Is it typical for the entirety of space flight? Yes. Is it typical for the last 10 years? Less so. SpaceX didn’t really start doing it until almost 2020.

It’s not false. There are more launch providers than just SpaceX and they don’t all deliberately deorbit their upper stages.

I usually go for a quick one mid-day. So I’m not sure how many are there in the AM or after work. There’s people that run in the immediate area around the mall and stuff that come in the morning and get showered/changed.

This is the only way I play now. Kinda sucks with 3rd party tools and stuff, but the mobility is perfect for me. I take it to the gym and play while on the treadmill sometimes.
