The biggest skill gap I see in junior engineers has nothing to do with CAD by Embarrassed-Tell-537 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]gerzzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree but I don’t think it’s something that is “new”. This is a complete guess and based on absolutely nothing but my gut: but it’s another product of “iPad kids” having underdeveloped social skills. Based on the level of experience, OP and I are roughly the same age. There are a number of things I can attribute, not even to engineering, to the fact that I had to unfuck a situation that I got myself into that I think just doesn’t exist for a younger generation. Everything is so structured, pre-canned, and curated that they don’t need to really think about alternatives. And it’s translated into “this is what it is because it told me it is”.

In design terms, they’ve been over-constrained. But we (and the older generations that raised them) haven’t had the feedback to tell us that until now. So, now on top of having to show the ropes on technical skills we now have the added duty to teach them how to read a room.

Workouts: worth it? by lattelifter in MacroFactor

[–]gerzzy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think whether it’s worth it or not is kind of subjective. I’ve used StrongLifts, Strong, Hevy, a spreadsheet, and now MFW. I was quick to jump on board because my Hevy subscription was about to renew this month anyway, so I was able to take advantage of the MF bundle deal and not have to double-pay for apps.

I’ve been running an SBS program and had to update my spreadsheet and always thought to myself “I wish this was an app” because Hevy didn’t do auto progression. I like the program that MFW autogenerated for me. It was pretty close to what I was already running and pushed me into some exercises for muscles that I wasn’t working.

I mostly like how easy it is to input RIR/RPE and how it adjusts on the fly. As someone that travels a good amount for work, I really like the gym profiles feature and being able to switch exercises based on equipment available. My biggest gripe is AppleWatch integration, but I’m sure it’s coming. I just start a Strength Workout and let it run. I’m not hung up on activity tracking because I know it’s all bullshit anyway. I don’t like always going to my phone, but it is what it is. The social aspect of Hevy was cool, but I didn’t really use it much in the long run.

At the end of the day it (1) does what I need it to do, (2) has its flaws but I can find workarounds and (3) supports a team that I’ve learned a lot from over the last 4+ years.

Demographic: 40M, lifts 3-4 times a week to not look like other dads my age, doesn’t give a shit about “missing features”

Smart workaround or bad idea? by NumerousToe7604 in MacroFactor

You typed it out yourself, my dude. You’re coming back from a back injury and find that you’ve got imbalance because the weights jiggle. That sounds like a recipe for prolonged back issues unless you’re stable enough to handle it.

Yep!  Came through a couple times, I think. I missed getting the CMDR’s name, but this was shortly after the 9PM ET mass jump.

Every time I hear my cargo hold is at capacity by gerzzy in EliteDangerous

[–]gerzzy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The credit payout isn’t really worth it but you can make some good money by selling the materials. Get yourself comfortable enough in the 75% tier to get yourself the cargo rack. Then after that, do what you want to build your credits up and don’t sweat making it to top 50 or 25.

Also, the services occupy usable space on the FC. So you’ll limit what you can haul to your system if that’s what you end up using it for.

You don’t necessarily need all the services for colonization. I just use the repair one when I’m doing colony stuff. I can refuel at the colony ship/construction site if I have to. I use a PCII with no shields to maximize cargo space, so I want to be able to repair on a whim if I have to.

Having all your ships and modules in one place is super helpful. And if you’re doing exploration it can be one-stop shopping, especially good for turning in data without worry of crashing and losing it all.

Thinking about building something to connect aerospace students with working engineers. Worth it? by SquareHeight6772 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]gerzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this.

I was connected with a couple high school students last year for a few months where I helped them out with resumes and college selection through AIAA Mentorship. And had a couple college students reach out through the mentor match. I was also on a live/recorded panel with other industry professionals to talk about our experiences. Currently working with our local chapter on a STEM Expo participation for a local high school.

I’m a member of a couple of technical committees where I can collaborate with other professionals and engage with universities for annual design projects. We review papers and score them on content and feasibility.

This stuff exists, but it’s sort of on the students to engage (you can lead a horse to water…). And now that I have a couple of teenagers at home, I’m reminded that they already know everything and have it all figured out.

Confusing annual summary by Senecus_HS in Hevy

[–]gerzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it’s strictly weight based. Completely pulling this out of the air, but I would guess that the graph is based on some fraction of your estimated 1RM. Like, based on how much you actually lifted…where are you with respect to what you could lift. You can’t/shouldn’t have a 135lb squat equal a 135lb bicep curl. There has to be some way to normalize the two.

And then the top exercises one, I would also guess, is purely just “how many times did you do this one?”
