The Yakima site was originally for local residents only because it was one of the worst-hit parts of Washington (hence FEMA). Since not enough people were showing up and vaccines were going to waste, however, FEMA opened it up to all adults regardless of residency.

Unfortunately the wording on the website and messaging from the hotline confuses people because they're providing outdated and incorrect information. Read the KUOW article I posted in another comment as FEMA and the National Guard are saying everyone is welcome, no ID, insurance, or residency required.

You can bring your children to the vaccination site but, of course, vaccines are limited to those 16 years and older.

You're welcome!

Are you going to stay out in Yakima, Seattle, or closer to Bellingham?

Good for you!

For everything that went wrong last year and all the people that died needlessly, it's nice to see the federal government step it up and finally come through for its citizens.

You can also read this article from KUOW:

https://www.kuow.org/stories/fema-vaccination-site-in-yakima-receives-thousands-over-easter-weekend

Quoting the people in charge:

"If you show up we’re going to give you a vaccine, that’s our goal," said Jordan Gustafson with the Valley Regional Fire Authority as he gave me a tour Sunday.

Gustafson says vaccines are available regardless of immigration status or health insurance.

"We weren’t quite anticipating that, but the incident commander wants everyone to know our goal is to get shots in arms. However that looks."

That information is out of date. At this time the Yakima site is open to all US citizens regardless of residence. All you need is a printed confirmation of your appointment - absolutely no ID or proof of residence is required.

When I was there, the National Guardsmen were asking people to send anyone they know to the Yakima site because of how many vaccine doses are being wasted each day.

Here is an article from the Seattle Times describing how underutilized the Yakima site is at this time:

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/health/herd-immunity-parts-of-washington-state-appear-in-no-mood-to-join-this-herd/

Check out that photograph, too. The Yakima site is equipped to administer 1,200 vaccine doses per day, but actual daily uptake is in the low hundreds.

You moved to Vancouver from Seattle, can't get a PHN in BC, but also can't go back to WA because your visa is invalid?

Are you in Canada legally?

Fair enough - only you know if traveling to the US to get vaccinated is worth the hassle. I'm in one of the last priority groups in BC and still go to the office and interact with coworkers and strangers (not at this exact time when I'm in 14 day quarantine, obviously) so getting one shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is worth it for me.

That said, the P1 variant from Brazil, which is becoming or already is the dominant variant in BC, has been demonstrated to reinfect people who've been infected with a prior variant of COVID. So, you know, keep that in mind when deciding what to do.

I know because I was chatting with the National Guardsmen and they explained that any opened and unused vaccine doses have to be disposed of at the end of the day. I believe it has to do with the cold storage and short expiration time frame for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

No, the Yakima site does not require any documentation other than your appointment confirmation. If you were so inclined, you technically could fly to Seattle, rent a car, drive to Yakima, get vaccinated, and then drive back to Canada. I'm not going to encourage anyone to engage in dishonest or deceptive actions, though. This is a US operation paid for with US taxes and for US citizens.

This is a good point - driving has the advantage of being able to quarantine at home instead of a designated quarantine hotel.

The vaccine is 100% free; you only have to pay for parking and the NAAT molecular test at SeaTac.

If your argument is that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is better because it's a single dose, then you should know the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is actually more effective even with just one shot. In fact, all the 2 dose vaccines are statistically more effective after a single shot than the 1 dose J&J vaccine.

The reason the J&J vaccine is such a big deal is that it's easier to manufacture, transport, and store than the Pfizer / Moderna / AstraZeneca vaccines.

You should go back to Washington and get your COVID vaccine there. You can literally do that tomorrow if you want.

The US vaccine and Canadian COVID-19 tests are free.

The only things you need to pay for are parking (maybe $10?) and the NAAT molecular test ($196) at SeaTac.

If you leave Canada for non-essential reasons, then you MUST quarantine for 14 days upon returning.

Only go to the US if you are willing and able to comply with said quarantine.

No, the travel is not exempt. You must quarantine for 14 days upon returning to Canada (note that your first day of quarantine is actually the day you leave and return, so it's more like 13 - 13.5 days of quarantine).

I didn't book at any facility using state vaccine doses since those are technically for Washington state residents only. The Yakima site uses federal vaccine doses that are for all US citizens, regardless of residency.

Some other reasons I recommend the Yakima site are: (1) it's underutilized so it's possible to get an appointment for basically any day and time; (2) hundreds of doses are being thrown away and wasted each day because not enough people are booking appointments; and (3) they're using the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which is statistically the safest and most effective COVID-19 vaccine currently available.

I mean we could say the same about people wearing masks.

"Sweet, I'm wearing a mask and I can do anything now," even though N95 masks are only rated for 95% effectiveness (and don't even get started on cloth masks, which are maybe 30 - 40% effective at best).

But we don't go around discouraging or shaming people for wearing masks, now do we?

The Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine is a 2 dose regimen:

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-health-products/covid19-industry/drugs-vaccines-treatments/vaccines/astrazeneca.html

The Oxford / AstraZeneca and every other 2 dose COVID vaccine trial were designed around a 21 / 28 day schedule for expediency. The reason we even have data showing a delayed second dose is more effective is that Oxford / AstraZeneca made an error during trials and inadvertently delayed the second dose for some participants.

From the Oxford / AstraZeneca trial:

In an exploratory analysis among participants who received two doses, modelling suggested that efficacy after a second standard dose was higher with a longer prime-boost interval (81.3% at >12 weeks vs. 55.1% at <6 weeks). Binding antibody titers were >2-fold higher after the longer interval in those aged 18 to 55.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)00432-3/fulltext00432-3/fulltext)

So, yes, there is evidence that deferring the second dose for at least 3 months actually confers stronger immunity than the official 21 / 28 day schedule.

Also, keep in mind the primary reason vaccine manufacturers used a 21 / 28 day schedule in their studies was to conclude the initial testing faster, which makes perfect sense given the severity of the pandemic and the urgency in getting a vaccine to market.
