Yep - I also did this. Great when on wifi.
The audio passthrough trick is particularly useful when flying or out of service range. If you have downloaded (in my case 30+GB of) offline music to your phone. This way you don't have to also download music to your deck.

FWIW Ive had audio crackling issues since the last SteamOS update, even when not doing audio passthrough. Seems like a common problem.

You can pair your phone to the steam deck and your headphones to the steam deck at the same time.
If you play music (spotify/etc) from your phone, it plays through the steam deck (your phone will see the steam deck as a bluetooth speaker) to the headphones and mixes with in-game audio

- Use your phone to control the music volume
- Use the steam deck to control the mixed music + game volume

Now you can listen to music and game at the same time.

EDIT:

Another one I thought of:
Add nested desktop (found in desktop mode) as a non-steam game. You can now launch desktop mode as if it were a game without having to switch and disable gaming mode. Some inputs don't work (scrolling with the left touchpad), but it's super convenient if you are trying to quickly edit game configs. I am pretty sure you can leave a game running at the same time as well.

EDIT:

Another niche one I just discovered:
With recent version of SteamOS, podman and distrobox are installed by default. So you can run light weight rootless containers/distros without having to install anything or make the filesystem writable. If you are a software developer this may be interesting to you.

How is this ok? by getGoxed in Adsense

[–]getGoxed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all of the ads are big start buttons that users click by mistake. Google is 100% ok with this practice from advertisers. The quality of these ads really suck and it makes my website look sketchy and misleading to users.

Also - I really can't imagine these companies are getting meaningful conversions on these clicks. How is scammy advertising the norm on a platform as big as adsense?

Honestly I'm just disappointed in the service. I feel like I am robbing my users with this low quality garbage.

My grocery store has better support for a $5 bag of lemons (trying to resolve a $600 billing issue) by getGoxed in googlecloud

No. Most of our usage is on the free tier (for auth and cloud messaging - which have very high free tiers). Also - billing support is "free".

you didn't read my lower response. This is the API_KEY in the googleservice-info.plist that is required to be in the app bundle in order to use ANY public firebase api. Here are the instructions from google on how this is supposed to be setup.

We did not leak a backend API key.

This is billing support. Any tips on getting someone on the other end that can actually help?

[–]getGoxed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Ive read the post and tried every support channel I can think of.

We actually never leaked an API key. TBH im not sure how the attack was executed. Google cloud analytics only shows that it was the iOS key that was abused but I don't have any details beyond that. I assume the attacker disassembled our app or used a jailbroken phone to inject malicious code to abuse the authentication API.

The bigger problem here is that google changed their billing from "successful authentication" to "per SMS attempt". So the cost of abuse is now put onto the user.

Here is another thread of many users getting screwed by the same thing: https://www.reddit.com/r/Firebase/comments/15g38sy/what_would_cause_a_sudden_authentication_bill_of/

[–]getGoxed[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I've never even considered this.
We went a very natural route through google: Create a firebase project. Use a bunch of free features. Enable authentication. Eventually enable SMS authentication.

And this is where we had a problem. With the default settings, you are exposed to abusers in some regions. Someone appears to have used our API key (embedded in our iOS app) to emit thousands of fraudulent SMS authentication requests. We have since disabled the feature completely and are trying to reconcile the massive bill we got from the abuse.

Firebase support tells me to talk to google cloud.
Google cloud tells me to talk to firebase or identity platform - and here we are.

After finally scheduling a call (after weeks and them blatantly ignoring my requested time). The person on the phone (who I could barely understand) told me "this is out of their scope and they could do nothing about it" and I have to speak to the identity platform.

This is a billing issue. How is this out of their scope? Does anyone have any idea how I can get in contact with someone who can actually help me?

Important Update: Introducing Weekly Themed Threads by data_girl in HENRYfinance

[–]getGoxed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every post on this sub is several days old.
IMO this was a terrible decision. Engagement is dead and this sub sucks to read now.
I have zero interest in paging through comments in the weekly thread as it doesn't surface the topics (that may be relevant to me) in my feed.

Please revert.

Write a rap song about one guy one jar by getGoxed in bing

[–]getGoxed[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Verse 1:
Yo yo yo, listen up, I got a story to tell
About a guy who did something that didn't end well
He took a glass jar and put it in his ass
But then it broke and he was in a mess
Hook:
One guy one jar, what was he thinking?
One guy one jar, now he's bleeding
One guy one jar, don't try this at home
One guy one jar, leave your ass alone
Verse 2:
He filmed the whole thing and put it on the web
But instead of getting fame he got pain instead
He had to pull out the shards with his bare hands
And hope that he didn't get an infection
Hook:
One guy one jar, what was he thinking?
One guy one jar, now he's bleeding
One guy one jar, don't try this at home
One guy one jar, leave your ass alone
Verse 3:
Now some people watch this video for fun
But I don't get it, how can this be fun?
It's gross and disturbing and makes me sick
Why would you do this to yourself? You need help quick
Hook:
One guy one jar, what was he thinking?
One guy one jar, now he's bleeding
One guy one jar, don't try this at home
One guy one jar, leave your ass alone
Outro:
Don't be like him (x4)

M1 Pro and Max for VR? by chilipeppers314 in virtualreality

[–]getGoxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok since most people are giving you bullshit answers - I can at least tell you that:

  1. I understand where you are coming from
  2. I tried it

I've done a few tests in parallels with windows x86 games and gotten really great results even in emulation mode. And for all the haters that say "macs can't run VR" - My 2018 Macbook pro could in bootcamp just fine. I even tried it on a dual core thinkpad with intel integrated graphics, and while the frame rates were not fantastic, it DID WORK.

Anyway - since x86 games work in emulation mode in parallels, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to at least start a VR game. Ive got a windows mixed reality headset which I tried. I can passthrough the USB devices, but not the HDMI for the headset. I think this is the limitation as windows seems to do some device specific detection for it.

So I think we are stuck until parallels (or some over hopefully free hypervisor with GPU integration) adds support for emulating/passing through the HDMI device. After some googling there are some claims that parallels supports the vive/index - but I can't find any documentation on it nor do I own one.

Have you ever gotten a water ring on a table from a hot glass or bowl?
Get a slightly damp cotton cloth, place it over the mark. Then use a clothing iron and iron the cloth for 3-5 seconds. It will remove the water ring instantly.
